I don't know how he will line up your squad, but I think if you used a two man midfield Fred and Bruno would be very coachable for Tuchel and how he prepares his teams. I am not sure if Ralf and Tuchel are comparable in styles even though Tuchel learned from him.

Rangnick likes a 4-4-2 system, so there's a good chance we'll go with a midfield two. I could imagine Bruno playing there vs some of the lesser sides, but I expect for the most part he will be one of the two behind the strikers, with Fred (who, with his pressing ability, will likely be one of Rangnick's favourite United players) and probably McTominay in midfield.

He also said it's adapted to the material. If he likes DvdB (and Pogba too) I can imagine him playing more of a flat 4-3-3 with one or two of Bruno, Pogba and Donny and one or two of Fred and McTominay (hopefully the former, imo). I think a 4-2-2-2 or 4-4-2 type formation could work with this material too, but I feel like it'd make players like Bruno, Pogba and DvdB less certain factors of where to put them exactly. Unless he can turn Pogba and Donny defensively solid enough to have one of them next to Fred while Bruno plays as an AM (Although his AMs and CFs have to defend a lot more than they did recently, which possibly means a Pogba or vdBeek in DM could actually be tactically potent, like how Lemar is a CM now at Atleti.

Not following you around but your posts jump out as almost always negative and cynical.

Maybe you're just a glass half empty kind of person?

Simply asking you to account for your negativity.
You didn’t answer my post. If the glazers continue to meddle and dither in equal measures do you actually expect RR to do any better than any other manager? They give huge long term contracts and fire the manager months later. Their long term approval is as good as a kiss of death at this stage! They pass on Maguire for 40 million “work with what you have” and then go back in for 80 plus million 18 months later. Stuff like that. It’s reactive as hell. No vision. Great deal at 40 but never an 80 million player no matter what anyone tells you, that’s just setting him up to fail instead of making a smart deal and being proactive we are chasing as always. They just aren’t football people.

I’m as optimistic as I have been when any other manager has come in here. I just fail to see what will change if the owners don’t fully step aside from recruitment issues affer making this appointment. Up to and Including selling Martial and letting Pogba go on a free. Even buying Ronaldo last minute. Who knows if Ole really wanted him. What if RR doesn’t want him? You really think he’ll have that kind of power? The real top level stuff. The owners are committed to spending millions a week on wages and we win nothing. Let’s hope they are as committed when it comes to taking a loss on players to maintain a much more healthy balanced and competitive squad.

No more Jones or Mata deals. No more paying Pogba or DDG world class wages when they aren’t actually amongst the best in the league, let alone the world. No more being held to ransom by players that don’t really want to be here. Just common sense that hands on owners/dofs with full autonomy could see and deal with a mile off. Would that money go straight back into buying promising players then? Who knows. It’s all currently based on a glazer whim and that’s the main problem.

If we want to start winning and playing modern football then we probably need to make bigger changes than under any other manager post Fergie. Modern Coaching is only half the battle to keeping any squad happy, let alone one the size of ours. Turning over players and cutting our losses is something we’ve struggled to do repeatedly and it’s majorly holding us back. Cut the players if they won’t run. We owe them nothing. One EL with the highest paid squad in the country is an embarrassment.

Nice try. :)In case you are really serious about learning German this is how it would be correct:
Es war eine sehr gute Pressekonferenz, es macht mir viel Spaß Herrn Rangnick zuzuhören.
Nett! Would it be an idea to have a languages (other than English) zone in the Caf?

Yes, seems he isn't too popular with fans of a certain club.

I get the dislike for Red Bull, of course, in general terms. I don't particularly like that whole concept myself. But it doesn't detract from RR's actual work.
It's not just some one certain club's fans. Because he established the artificial constructs Hoffenheim and Leipzig in the Bundesliga (I also don't like to call them real clubs) a lot of people, fans of many different clubs, see him as a gravedigger of traditional football in Germany. So he is not universally liked for sure, however that argument doesn't sit well with me. If Hoffenheim and Leipzig were the reason why massive clubs like Schalke, Bremen or Hamburg were relegated I would follow this, but those clubs are down, and small traditional clubs like Union Berlin or Freiburg are happily playing in the Bundesliga. No one stopped those big clubs from being competently managed except themselves, so I think their fans should stop crying about Leipzig/Hoffenheim.

Additionally his intellectual style doesn't sit well with some old school fans saying football is just hard work etc (which is obviously total bollocks).

He will be great for Bruno and Shaw and Sancho the younger ones. Maybe Lingard. It’s a big chance/challenge for him too. I like his vibe in the presser too. I am unlike most here. I liked LVG, think he’s a great guy, and was treated poorly here. Mou deserved more respect, too, though he was too negative for me.

The problem has been the board and the structure. Now this appointment, plus a few other things, seem to hint at maybe a change of heart (or pocket) in the boardroom. On that, like Herr Ralf R, we will wait. Let’s not be cynical. Come on Joel. You did the right thing here. Keep on.

Support the manager. Support the club. Stop the rot. Fix the stadium. Or feck off.

What I liked about Rangnick's introductory presser...

When asked about bringing new players in, Rangnick spoke very highly of the forward positions. He did not speak highly of the defense.
This to me makes me feel confident that he will somehow recruit a defense that are able to perform at the level need for a club like United.

-----

What I didn't like about today's presser

Rangnick doesn't have a support staff ready to hit the ground, as he explained that all his closest coaching support allies are on longterm contracts with big clubs. Carrick has walked away, as anyone could have predicted by his body language as seen on Sky sports over the past week or so. This is a big empty hole that will remain a concern until those positions are filled.

No disrespect to Ole, but it felt good to see a more mature football coach speaking straight to our strengths and weaknesses

Surely not. Ulm, Hannover, Stuttgart, Schalke are all real clubs. Ulm a quite small one that had unique success due to him, but still those clubs were all absolutely traditional clubs, nothing wrong with them. He got the nickname "professor" in 1998 when he explained how his pressing/zonal marking in Ulm worked on TV and some belittled him for that antics as I said, but I think there was generally respect for his success at the time. Later on he moved to Hoffenheim, had an intermezzo at Schalke and then moved on to Leipzig. To put it poetically, the unloved genius went to the dark side in those years, and that's why many fans really turned on him.

And btw, real clubs don't exist in the Premier League, as none of the teams is really owned by a club consisting of members

I agree, his work at those clubs certainly hasn't made him the most popular figure around in German football, and I was never his biggest fan either, but I always respected the great work he did at those "projects". It's also clear that his way of thinking about football has influenced a whole generation of German coaches who are by now all very successful themselves.

All that being said I'm also under no illusion at how much influence he can have on this team in the short run, but maybe the new manager boost teams usually get will get us over the line to finish 4th this season and have a couple of more good evenings in the CL. I just hope that him staying after not being manager anymore can have a positive influence on the club and he won't be just sitting in the stands watching football while earning a pay check because the other people at the club weren't willing to learn from him.

 I just watched some of the press conference and I want him permanent already.

I just feel like this guy really knows what he's on about and is thoroughly likeable. Heil represent the club well. If he can back it up on the pitch then he'll be a hero to me after the last 8 years.

So he is going to set us up to defend as a team. It is Mou all over.

Suspect this is tongue in cheek, but there are those that are stupid enough to believe it so just to address the point
I think to gain control on games in the future, it has to do with playing proactively
Doesn’t sound defensive to me.

That's a long post for a question. Are you asking me if I think the club can be successful with the Glazers around? The answer is of course yes as they've been here for quite a while and we've won plenty.

Like it or not, and @Adnan has posted quite eloquently on this recently and is pretty knowledgeable on the workings of the club, things are improving gradually behind the scenes. Woodward is leaving his role and football people are being put in to the roles that business people have been occupying. Rangnick being added as a consultant, and Murtaghs visit to see him a few years ago to learn, shows there's already an admiration and acceptance that things must change and I'm quite happy to believe they are.

What happened with Ole was quite unique. He was rightly offered the job after his impressive spell as caretaker and I can't criticise the club in that regard. Where they fell short was failing to identify the point which he had taken us as far as he could. In my opinion that was wavering last season but confirmed after the EL final. At that point he'd got back to back top 4 spots, something not managed since Sir Alex, and got us in a number of semi finals and lost a final. At this point I think it was clear that was as good as it got and we should have been more ruthless.

Again I can see why they didn't do that though. What really irritated me was the new contracts. That should have been left alone and was short sighted.

Ultimately the club got itself in a corner with Ole which I do feel was difficult to manoeuvre out of under the circumstances. With regards to transfers we have behaved reactively but again that's improving. Adding quality like Varane and getting Sancho, both at reduced rates, is first class business. Bringing in Ronaldo was an opportunity which I'm glad we took.

When you look at how we have been operating off the pitch it's improving at every level. It's stalled with Ole and the coaching but now that's back on track.

I see plenty to be optimistic about.

I don't want to get carried away but man what a difference in messages. From "fine margins" to "we need to control the game and not just let anything happen." Football is still a game with random things happening but I hope to see a real identity form in the next few weeks. Might result in a few goals against us as we get used to this style but as Michael Owen said recently, we need to just stick with it regardless because that's the only way we will properly vet who is and who is not capable of playing this style. McT and his ilk will be found out more than they already are. I have hope for Fred though.

Personally, I'm a long way off from feeling optimistic.
Rangnick did say that he couldn't recruit his first choices in coaching support. This is a significant problem area with which needs to be sorted out. Anyone that claims that the coaching staff that we have now is improved, has to be snuffing glue. This season is unquestionably disastrous

What's the reaction been in Germany by the way? They vaguely surprised at Ralf going man Utd, or happy to see more German representation in this league? Or just indifference?
A bit of surprise, generally a bit positive but no one really heavily invested in the story. Guess you can say the sports media will look with interest on what happens, but are not yet sure how it will go.

I guess this would be to unbalanced in midfield. I could imagine that attack and defence could be fielded that way, but in midfield I would think it is more likely to see Bruno as the left 10 and Sancho as the right 10, while Fred and VDB play behind them. Bruno doesn't control possession, he risks giving it away, that works better further up front.

Obviously, not

Rangnick's introduction to the club is promising, but I'm reserving any feeling of optimism until I see more on how builds his coaching staff. When he said he's not making any immediate changes in the staff, that's exactly where I hang my hat up and sit back down and wait

In addition, I don't expect Rangnick to talk about the horrendous form of our defense. When the winter transfer window opens and there are new quality defenders coming in, then I'll be optimistic

Seriously, I don't believe I'm being unreasonable.

Just got round to watching the presser. This guy clearly knows his shit.

so erm, yeah, United might not thank me, but get the contract out put it on the table & let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants, let him sign the contract. Ralf’s at the wheel man!

Gloat and take the piss out of me all you want but I will defend Rangnick until the end too. Especially if he doesn't hit the ground running, as the pitchforks will be out, we all know that.

I defended Ole as there was some positives, no matter how hard some "Ole Outers" would lead you to believe.

Yes, towards the end, even I, a strong believer in giving Ole time and believing he should be kept on, felt that things were getting untenable, each and every match was a "how much are we going to lose by" match. It was the right time for things to change. Ok maybe it should've been after Man City at least. But I was passionate about the club and still am, I felt that we should invest in long term. But things were getting worse and worse, so maybe there was enough time. There was tumescent football being played and you could see glaring errors on the pitch, it seemed like no one knew what to do.

We'll never know now of course. But I am very very very excited for the future of Man Utd under Rangnick's tenure. The future of the Man Utd is a promising one.
Ole brought a smile to our player's faces following Mou's departure. However the Portuguese left such a toxic environment behind that most of his successors would have been able to do so. What I do attribute Ole for was his ability to do well as a temp manager.

After that it all went to shambles. He hired his mates as coaches which was a problem considering that mostly were either inexperienced or specialised his failure. As a player Ole was one of my favourite players. As a manager though he came across as lazy. He didn't coach, his tactics were basic and when shit started hitting fan big time he went on a holiday and expected that everything will be good and dandy on his return. If Ole wasn't a club legend than the likes of you lot would have skinned him alive.

Anyway 3 years later and after 415m spent we've got no trophies to show for this rebuild and the club look set for another 180 degrees directional change. So yes Ole tanked big time.

Regarding Rangnick I don't think he'll be a success football wise. I simply can't see how players who are either lazy (Pogba, Martial etc) or with a football IQ of a peanut (McT, Maguire, AWB etc) can ever implement the professor's style of football especially mid way in the season. Which is a shame really as he's the manager United needs and the closest thing we can have to a SAF. I am not referring to trophies. No one beats the man on that. However Rangnick sees the game on a global level having worked as sporting director, DOF and a manager. He understands the business behind it, the value of having a functioning youth academy, the importance of having competent people at the right places and he also brings to the table an entertaining but also brutally effective style of football. That was basically what SAF was all about.
