We looked so much more organised and structured, I enjoyed what I saw today.

I know there'll be teething problems and that's mainly going to come from the fact that the games themselves will be where we do our fitness work for the next month or so, meaning players are going to run out of steam before the 90 minutes are up.

Am I crazy after watching the game that the team really tried to press on a collective way (ok not even close to perfection) this after what, 1 training session, which probably was recovery and video sessions?

Or I am trying to see things that didn’t existed? When was the last time the team kept a clean sheet at home?
Have you not seen the reaction here ?

Everyone's surprised, one day of training and the improvement was immense. Our first clean sheet at home in 290 something days. won back the ball in the opponents half 12 times (the most in a game since SAF).

What impressed me more was the way our players moved to press. Before the ball was passed all of our players were moving to stop the channels of passing. Now how can they do it only after 4 hours or so of training? Does it mean that Ole did not want to press and instructed them not to do so? Nothing wrong with that as there are more than one way to win a football game. or simply the coaching staff and Ole had no clue how to do the press?

The last time we beat Palace at home in 2017, Fellaini was MOTM.

Good result and nice to keep the clean sheet. The team should learn to manage the game energy-wise better with time.

He looks like he’s going to use the squad. Telles, Dalot. Not ignoring Donny. Pressing in the opposition half, set nice and compact. Clean sheet. It looks like things are going to be ok. If we can get a few of the forwards to hit form at the same time we will be dangerous against anyone in the second half of the season.

Hasn't changed much. Now Fred is the MOTM.

Not ignoring Donny is a bit of a stretch when he came on for his textbook last few minutes cameo  :nervous:

Do expect him to see more action though. Elanga getting a run out was great to see more so than anyone else. Actually playing a child.

Either that or it was the biggest coincidence in the world how many times we recovered possession. I'm half surprised but many of our players play on international teams that have adopted some form of organised passing and pressing, it's not like they have to learn it from scratch. it's 2021 and we were late to the party.

This is why some of us argued against the opinion that a manager needs years and hundreds of millions to implement his style.

1 training session and we're already seeing signs of a proper style being implemented.

Manchester United won possession in the final third 12 times vs. Crystal Palace. That’s the most they’ve done in a Premier League match since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Yeah I was writing this without reading other opinions precisely because I wasn’t expecting this, sure, players like Ronaldo or Fernandes didn’t played as they need to play, but fecking Ronaldo was pressing in his own half at 95 minutes, of course here or there he was doing his shit, but I saw him trying to work, even not playing well.

Ronaldo was brilliant today. He even mentioned it after the match, he said 'Ronaldos work off the ball, I take my hat off to him'.

I think eventually, Shaw will come back in. AWB is in massive trouble though. Dalot looks a massive threat.

He deserves it too. If he’s not getting those chances he should be out on loan. Ole been far too conservative on that front. Young players will stagnate without challenges. He’s beyond 23s already and he’s not the only one.

I’d rather start him than Rashford next game. Sends a strong message and tells the youngsters they are back in with a shout. Gives Rashford something to think about too.

He's not only talking about pressing. He's also talking about his sprints to get into position in attack. Our players should really start finding him.

Take Portugal out of that equation. Maybe Dalot who is the younger one hasn’t been brainwashed by Santos, maybe Ralf can save him from Santos.

Even Ronaldo and Bruno without playing well tried to follow the instructions. Maybe Cristiano was handshaking Ralf for a reason.

Tells a lot about recent years level of coaching, not only Ole, after all we all have seen how awful is current Mourinho at Roma. Lots of work to be done, let’s see if the players are able to assimilate this quickly.

He better learn this time he isn’t in the age to only stay there waiting for the ball while the other players have to defend, if he isn’t physically able to play game after game, rest and rotation, after all this squad is expensive and all the players must feel they have a chance to play.

Yes, I agree. I think the key to Ronaldo is rotation and rest, with our games coming up I can see him rested quite a bit so he can be ready to go in the UCL round of 16 fixtures.

He's spot on. First 30 minutes the tactical blueprint was carried out excellently (given its the first game!) and just lacked end product. After that we lost the dominance of the game but it has has be expected. The players are not used to this

Improving our fitness and stamina levels will be as important as the tactical aspect of the game. The moment a couple of our players, surprisingly the younger ones started to get tired, we started to fall back and that was when Palace started to get a few free kicks and corners which could have turned out to be very dangerous situations. This was a really good start even more after only 45 minutes of training.

The first half hour was the best Man Utd have played this season without doubt, all that was missing was a goal or two. Controlled the second half well enough and deserved win, haven't been able to say that in a while. Hopefully this trajectory continues under Ralf but we can be very happy with his start.

We saw that with Tuchel. Even Vieira, Palace play so differently under him than Hodgson.

Old habits creeped back in once the freshness faded away. It’ll take some time. Badly needs another proper midfielder to support Fred.
I feel like that was completely expected. The players have been “coached” to play a certain way for the last 3 years, you can’t undo that with a couple of training sessions. By January I’d expect the first 35 minutes to be applied for the whole 90 with fading levels of success due to lack of fitness. It’s a shame RR will be leaving in the summer. Would be exciting to see what he could do with a good preseason and a couple of transfer windows, with his style of play and our good squad with near unlimited resources compared to what he’s had before.

You can write a multiple page essay about this, but here rightfully nobody cares, so let's say it short, normally you shouldn't need to compare these two guys, Mintzlaff was good as the CEO and looking over the financial stuff, also he's very good with Mateschitz.
But since 2019 he has made himself something like an absolutist monarch after Rangnick left with the hiring of Krosche (normally the guy only was supposed to be an assistant for Rangnick and look at the cooperation with Paderborn which was torn down by their fans, suddenly he was the main sporting director and Rangnick gone), who he fired this year because his signings were total shit (like letting Schick go for being too expensive but then buying useless Sorloth for nearly the same and burning a ton of money in other transfers). Now he hasn't hired any new guy and is basically the boss for everything while having absolutely zero background in football so having no knowledge of what you need. So yes, Red Bull football before Rangnick was a waste of money and completely shit and now it looks like it will go that road again. Salzburg is still in good hands thanks to the scouting network he built and their sporting director Christoph Freund is a direct student of Rangnick so he makes the same good transfers (but he's a Leipzig hater so that doesn't help the entire system).

The team is built for Nagelsmann at this point so when you look at what was said today, the team didn't want to go back to pure pressing (rightfully so) and stay with the Nagelsmann possession system which Marsch while somewhat trying had no idea to teach (here another Mintzlaff masterclass comes to play selling all of Nagelsmann's assistants for change even though Nagelsmann said initially he won't take them with him).
This is the main worry I'd have as United, what he'll do when teams start parking the bus. This is always the issue with the Red Bull pressing teams. In 18/19 after a very bad start he found a solid way being monsters at set pieces and for a Rangnick team very good with the ball. If he just goes hiring Ten Hag in the summer while buying the right players it could turn out to be a non-issue anyway and after hiring Nagelsmann I very well could see him do it again. You can look at the guys he bought for Bragantino as well, they are in the 2nd season in the 1st tier and just were in the South American Europa final and could qualify for Libertadores now. His team building with Ten Hag as coach could be a juggernaut quickly.
Aw great post. Cheers for the info.
I think the good German posters have added a lot to the forum.

Simply because Ole wasn't a manager in any way, shape or form. Everything we achieved was in spite of him.

Three years of no coaching does this to you.
