I'm better than Messi (even though I'm not)
Anyone genuinely moaning needs to seriously get a grip. He’s had 2 days with the squad before today and one training session. We were very good first 30 minutes then faded, that’s to be expected one game in but there was a clear improvement in intensity and approach. The players will get fitter, more cohesive and accustomed to this way of playing.

Barring a few, most of this squad have never experienced such an intense way of playing so everyone needs to be patient, they’ll learn how to conserve energy where possible and control games. Luckily we have a good run of matches that are very winnable without having to be almost perfect for 90 minutes.

These first 30 mins was the best we have played in a long time. Makes me excited for the future.

Simply because Ole wasn't a manager in any way, shape or form. Everything we achieved was in spite of him.

Three years of no coaching does this to you.
Must say previous to Ole Mourinho wasn't in any way better. Just watch Roma vs Bodo or yesterday against Inter to see why post Ferguson the things developed that way.

Not ignoring Donny is a bit of a stretch when he came on for his textbook last few minutes cameo  :nervous:

Do expect him to see more action though. Elanga getting a run out was great to see more so than anyone else. Actually playing a child.
not many other options though. He and Greenwood were the only attackers on the bench. Well, and Mata I suppose.

Not sure if Liverpool do this, at Dortmund Klopp did a high-press for 20-25 minutes to try to score 1-2 goals, then control the game and play on the counter. The early wave of high pressure often threw teams off from kickoff and led to goals but it's unsustainable to press so intensely so the players take it easy and press situationally after building an early lead.

Only AwB and Shaw should be worried.
Shaw doesn’t need to be worried but he does need to start applying himself and work his way out of his current slump. He’s a far superior player to Telles in terms of pace and defensive ability, and is a close enough match on attacking ability and delivery to make that metric irrelevant.

I agree on AwB though, even if Dalot isn’t the permanent answer we need an upgrade on AwB.

I actually thought specifically about those passes that he would take issue with them. He’s right too, sideways in those positions are hospital passes, if someone reads them and intercepts they can take the entire midfield out of the game and put you in a dangerous position almost instantly.

It’s better to go direct and even if you don’t win the first ball, if you press well and win the second it’s them that is in trouble.

Bringing sancho and rashford inside compressing the space in the middle making it far more difficult to play right through the middle of us, the full backs pushing up to stop teams coming down the sides and the cbs holding a high line not allowing Palace any space to play into. Also Rashford playing on the shoulder and us actively looking for him pushing palaces defensive line back, a kind of play a high line if you dare tactic.

Not that difficult to implement it seems, not perfect of course and I'm sure we will look more fluid as the weeks pass by, Ralf mentioned control and he's right, we have struggled to have any control in games this season with a confused set up, neither one thing or the other somewhere between a high press side and a sit back counter attack side. Sometimes proactive sometimes reactive often with a proactive forward line and a reactive defensive line. Today though very clearly being proactive as much as is possible. Small change in mentality, makes a big difference.

I agree it’s tiresome and not needed, but it IS true. Getting a coach from bloody Molde was never going to be sustainable in the long run.
yes well, I just think maybe something like "not in the end good enough" oughtto cut it, without needing to go to "totally 150% useless and no manager at all", just because some people just can't get enough and have clearly stopped worrying they'll look like idiots unless they exercise a certain amount of filtering their impulses before transmitting them through the keyboard.

What impressed me more was the way our players moved to press. Before the ball was passed all of our players were moving to stop the channels of passing. Now how can they do it only after 4 hours or so of training? Does it mean that Ole did not want to press and instructed them not to do so? Nothing wrong with that as there are more than one way to win a football game. or simply the coaching staff and Ole had no clue how to do the press?
Ole wanted his team to press and we saw some rare glimpses here and there but thing is he didn't know how to coach the side. Ragnick will do that because he is a master of that. I feel we will see some amazing pressing display as the season goes on. And the best part is whoever takes over next season will have half the work already done. I feel this is a smart move by the club. 6 months to teach the players to press and then kick on with the next manager.

My niece brought home a note from the school, I think it is pretty encouraging, so I’m sharing on here. “Dear Mr Xx, in passing from the PE teacher (lolz wtf??) straight to the headmaster, all the pupils (your son, as well) are more focused and eager to prove themselves, which clearly bodes well for the exams to come. With our kindest regards, The School.”

If there’s one thing that tempers my enthusiasm about this good start it’s that this a quite a few of this group of players has soon enough gotten bored with the message being put across by successive managers. That ability to just stop doing what is asked - whether we as supporters think it has any value - is an insidious thing and won’t go away easily.

who do you feckin think ?
I think that was our second 1 nil of the season but this was nothing even resembling that flukey result at Wolves. The 'control' Ralf mentions was evident today and the lads were not pooping their pants with the likes of Zaha running through the lines like what would have been the pattern with the last reigime. Good start Ralf

I don't think this ever really happened in any conscious way. Moyes wasn't a good enough manager, and in hindsight was bound to be a disaster coming on the heels of SAF. With LVG, we won a cup final in his last game and I don't think the players stopped doing what he asked. As I recall we played his style as he wanted, it just didn't result in much good football or success. And I don't think they even knew what Ole wanted them to do this season, we looked so confused and so disjointed. With Jose the whole environment just turned nasty, it's easy to imagine why that would negatively affect players and their play.

If the players are given coaching and instructions that make sense, and they can see it works on the pitch, and the manager treats them with respect, I don't see any reason why they'd stop doing what was asked of them.

Well, with Jose, we knew what we were getting - defensive and counter attacking football. Didn't work out as intended but the signs were there before we appointed him.
