Big moment for American coaches
Fresh from the news that Jesse Marsch was fired by RB Leipzig after a disastrous first few months in charge of the Bundesliga club, this news about Armas heading to United will boost the profile of Americans coaches in Europe.

Marsch knew Rangnick well and coached the New York, Salzburg and Leipzig Red Bull teams, as well as totally buying in to Rangnick’s playing style and club philosophy.

Armas was Marsch’s assistant coach during his impressive spell in charge of the New York Red Bulls (they won the Supporters’ Shield in 2015 and then in 2018 when Armas took over from Marsch) and this hire suggests Rangnick is already calling plenty of shots when it comes to the future coaching philosophy and direction at Manchester United.

What could future of United look like?
It seems very likely that United will now be closely linked with the Red Bull family of clubs. At least loosely.

Rangnick has been the key man across the Red Bull family of clubs and other than Liverpool buying plenty of players from Leipzig and Salzburg in recent years, the RB group has had no real connection to the Premier League.

Until now.

Leipzig, New York and Salzburg all have a clear playing style and direction and this would be a very good thing for United to tap in to with Rangnick around.

This is also a huge opportunity for Armas who has been out of work since being fired by Toronto FC earlier this year, but there’s no doubting he is a well-respected coach in the American soccer community and is obviously highly thought of by Rangnick too.

Armas knows Rangnick’s style of play well and it will be intriguing to see how United fare in the coming months.

Apparently awful as Manager of NYRB and Toronto but that's obviously different to being a coach under Rangnick.

Dunno the guy but its good to see Rangnick getting his people into place. The confidence I have in Rangnick, having seen him get his ideas across to our players so fast after only 45 minutes on the training pitch, makes me think its good to have more of his guys around the place.

Yeah.

Sir Alex's assistants have, in the main, been rubbish managers. However, the ability to understand what the man at the top wants and convey that clearly to players is a different skillset. As long as you got the right person at the top of the tree, you don't need to worry about the coaches lacking Rangnick's tactical brain. We've got the general, now we just need the trusted lieutenants.

Can’t wait to decide he’s utterly clueless and needs to go once results go south

As long as he can coach. His failure as a manager is irrelevant.

Shouldn't be judged by his managerial reign. He's an assistant manager and tbh I trust Rangnick to make the correct calls.

Wait he’s an American? feck. Do we really need Ted Lasso 2.0 coaching us?

No problem with this at all. Don’t forget Ralf is pretty hands on in training and coaching himself. Hardly like it’s the latter years Sir Alex or Solskjaer where they delegate it out to their coaching staff.

Can’t wait for the unavoidable “What does Armas even do?!” threads.

Food for thought, back in my younger days I was a good sales specialist winning awards and beating sales records. When I then got promoted to sales manager the whole team’s sales number went down and I got a lot of stick and ultimately got fired. Different roles, different skillset.

this chap was absolutely clueless when managing TFC in mls, really bad. I appreciate he is coming as a coach and not a manager, but still, I actually thought we'd be bringing in Jesse Marsch and this was a smokescreen. Will have to trust Mr Ragnick on this one, he knows what he is doing, hopefully.

Plenty of good coaches/assistents was poor as managers. Meulensteen, Queiroz, McClaren and Lijnders is a few examples.

I trust Rangnick, managing performance not really important to how he coaches under another manager. Im a little wary of how some of that American earnestness translates to British players, a terribly stereotypical take but rightly or wrongly we still have a disconnect in football between Americans and British

I watched Red Bulls play back end of 2018 and I was genuinely shocked how bad they were, they were playing Atlanta FC who were a level above them although that standard was probably league one level. US mens soccer is bad, they’d definitely struggle to beat league one teams

He's coming to implement the ideas of Rangnick and not to implement his own. And him being well versed in the ideals in question will help Rangnick implement his ideas a little quicker, hopefully.

Indeed, but they did more than that under Sir Alex. Most of them were brought in because they had fresh ideas and were encouraged to implement them; Queriroz being the one who brought about the greatest change.
