No I’m not. You’ve got it all backwards lad. I’m not saying we would have won those games. I’m saying those two games in particular are terrible examples to suggest, as many have done, that we needed him…given the simple fact that we were winning without him and went on to lose so worse with him. And I don’t think he improved us when he came on, while obviously you do so we’ll just have to disagree there.

I don’t know where you stand but some people seem to think we need to start him in every game. I don’t. As I said before, we’re no better off than we were this time last year for having him here. His numbers are ok, while other players are worse. And our results and are at best as good as this time last year.
I agree with your overall point, although we are better off this season in the champions league and that’s largely down to Ronaldo. He seems to thrive in those games in particular.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
What the feck does that even mean?
It means that Keane was a great player, and as a pundit constantly pushes out of touch, ‘hardline Dad’ opinions that mainly are just guff and bare no relevance over the current reality of football - often contradicting himself in the process.

Ole’s United lose - ‘Football’s a team game, everyone must work hard’.

New Utd draw against top of league Chelsea - ‘It doesn’t matter if Ronaldo doesn’t work hard, you play him’.

And so on.

he said the same about Cantona in fairness in the past. Like any rule there are exceptions. When you have truly special players you sometimes have to make those exceptions, he did when he captained teams with both players in it, as did Fergie who picked the teams. Keane has many faults but I wouldn't be too hard on him on this one.

Was he the Captain when Cantona was here? I thought Eric was the Captain and Keane took over after Eric left?

yes your right, but point remains, Keane still played in a team that accomodated Eric's lack of workrate

Football’s changed since then, a lot.

And thus, relatively, Ronaldo offers less now than Cantona did then.

But that’s just an example really on my thoughts on Keane these days.

That whole picking on players for having an IG presence and or / having a flamboyant haircut etc while often offering literally no tactical insight as a pundit is just so reductive and tedious.

He obviously plays up his personality as a pundit, but it just bores me. Offer some insight ffs, people care what you think, say something interesting.

We didn't bring CR7 back to win FA-Cups, Carabao cups or whatever. As Carragher said our club must have the title as the ultimate goal and of course CR7 would play a key role in acheiving that. So I reckon Keano, as good a pundit as he is, got that one wrong.

The idea that Eric didn’t work is nonsense. He tackled. He bullied centre halves. He ran channels. He defended corners.

He had a demeanour that suggested he was a luxury but he didn’t swan around. He was indulged for his eccentricity. But he trained hard. He played hard. People conflate lots of things with him.

the one thing he wasn't, was a luxury, the amount of goals in big games he scored, automatically dispells that nonsense. Eric wasn't a workhorse, didn't need to be, he was their for his goals and creativity and the team accomodated his lack of workrate. Did he tackle, of course he did, be hard not to at any time on the pitch, but he wasn't a workhorse in the mold of a Tevez or Rooney. I'm not knocking him, massive Cantona fan, but like Ronaldo in his first spell, we factored in their lack of tracking back etc to benefit from their skill.

Watched this game a bit back and Everton players were winding him up all game and trying to get him sent off. Thought he played really well though and gave as good as he got. Can you imagine a player on the receiving end of a tackle like this nowadays?

Was watching this and it occurred to me that Iniesta is maybe the right comparison for Keane.

Obviously Iniesta played in a 3 and Keane a 2 so Iniesta was wider and a bit higher up, but they both typified their regions' football, were calmer short passers than damn near anyone around, scored basically every 10 games but ran games (Keane with his ball carrying and tackling, Iniesta by keeping the ball under pressure and both with reliable passing). You wouldn't mistake one for the other obviously watching a game, but they both won the treble and tons of leagues by being better at the same style of play most everyone else in their position in their league was playing and ensuring their team won the midfield battle.

He's gone soft.

Old Roy Keane would have booted that little kid in the face and then punched everyone on his way through the crowd
First of all the guy is no kid. He's taller, he seems heavier and he's younger then Roy is. Secondly you don't know what type of upbringing and training that guy has and if he's surrounded by his mates. Finally Roy Keane is 50 years old. He was a professional player and had trained boxing which is a plus however he had his fair share of injuries as well. Evander Holyfield was probably the best boxer of his generation and he got toyed with lately in a professional exhibition.

If Keane engaged into a fight and he ends up properly beaten then he risk getting injured. Not to forget that his persona as a hard man would be ruined forever.

I think he's well liked by the Sunderland fanbase still, could be a good move for him, albeit in a lower league.

On a side note, i can never find United vs Liverpool 1999, the 2-2 match online on youtube  . Would like to see Keane and Ince battle it out in that one again; Keane was phenomenal in the 2-1 FA cup game at OT.

If he gets the job good luck to him. Still I will miss him as a pundit.

It could be a great opportunity for him to show he has learned a few lessons and can adapt to managing modern footballers. If he can, he could do a great job there.

I'd love to see it happen. I reckon they'd be getting the same Roy who left, and it looks like they may know that anyway.

Was hoping he'd get the Celtic job last summer, League One would be a bit of a shame. If he goes there, I hope he proves the doubters wrong. I think he has it in him to at least be a good manager.

Be interesting to see if he can do a good job.

He could always bring Micah with him as the good cop.

I really really hope it goes well, especially as Sunderland was the only place he really did well as a manger, so it could ruin his legacy there a bit... I just can't see it working though...
