His drop off over the past 18 months has been remarkable. Might actually be finished. On the other hand, might have just got his 350,000 contract and checked out, otherwise surely a player of his quality would want to play CL football.

What?? The comparison was between Arsenal and Uniteds current league position which someone pointed Arsenal have spent more money than United so they should be doing better..

It's like you ignored the whole conversation to have some strange dig.

And yes they have improved the XI, but the cost of them is irrelevent because they were bought in for high potential and longevity/sell on value. Not to come in and have an instant huge impact. Nobody expects Ben White to come in and play like a £50m CB off the bat.
Maybe you should’ve read all the posts rather jumping in at the middle and you might understand. Maybe try reading the whole conversation next time. United have been terrible and sacked their manager as a result and yet Arsenal still trail us. You chiming in with United have spent loads adds nothing. Nobody is saying United are doing well. That Arsenal trail a dysfunctional United team only adds to how shite Arsenal are doing.

If they’ve improved the first 11 then the points tally should improve. As it stands, Arsenal are bang on course for the exact total they had last season. Nobody expects Ben White to be a £50m centre back at any time.

I did read all the posts..

So? We don't have anywhere near the squad of United. At the start of the season, everyone had United finishing miles above us.

Arsenal are currently in the fight for the top 4, which goes above my expectations for this season. I expected us to finish around 6th with the signings we made, which would have been an improvement on last season, and some development.

We are on course for both these things. So what exactly is your point? We are doing just as I thought we would do, and as many Arsenal fans did.

Points tally is one way to judge a season, but if every side gets stronger then it's all relative. League position is more important for me, and I do want to see an improvement on last season, but we are halfway through the season..

The point is blindingly obvious. Arsenal aren’t progressing and are not where they should be and your manager gets a comparatively easy ride. Arsenal are sitting 6th only because Spurs, despite being on their fourth manager of the year, have played two games less and Leicester have dropped off a cliff.

Every side hasn’t got stronger though. This season has been evidence of quite the opposite.

His target by the board was to secure European football, so while we can all talk about if we're 6th or 7th because people have games in hand or whatever 16 games in, he'll be judged at the end of the season if he has managed it or not.

I’m happy for Arsenal to continue to be irrelevant.

All about managing & meeting expectations. You want to see improvement, but doubt anyone thought we would be top 4 with this squad. Target was to get back into European football, he's still well in about it so let's see how he does. If he doesn't get it, I'll judge him accordingly.

You never know, you might make the same irrelevant competition next season, & we can continue to be an irrelevance together in comparison to the good teams.

We could. We were on that path when most of our fanbase wanted our manager sacked because of that fact. The deflection to United being shite doesn’t change Arsenal’s situation.

I appreciate that fact. I've tried to explain the the situation to you, but you just threw a bit of a snide comment back about Arsenal being an irrelevance.

Im on record on here as saying to improve further, we'll probably have to change our manager as well. Theres many Arsenal fans of the opinion it should be done now, so it's not like he's getting a free ride. I just think that if he meets the targets set by the board in this part of his rebuild, he'll keep his job.

I don’t really need the situation explained to me. I’m fully aware of where Arsenal are and I think Arteta is getting away with murder.

I actually find it sad seeing Arsenal where they are. There was a time when United v Arsenal was the biggest and best game to watch. The quality on show from both these days is appalling.

The board has somehow convinced itself that Arteta is the best man for this job and that 2-3 years from now he will have us challenging for the title. I personally see nothing apart from his FA Cup win that suggests he’s an elite manager. Our performances under him have been awful I have no idea what our game plan is apart from playing out from the back and even when we do win the quality of football is average at best.

I would have sacked him at the end of last season but the board seems to have decided to back him no matter what. The board is backing him so Auba has to go. Can’t stand another Ozil situation either.

I'll judge him come the end of the season. If we're sitting in 8th again, then yes i'll be on his back big time.

We are currently less than halfway through the season, and competing for the 4th spot. So for now, he's doing just fine.

We spent quite a lot in the summer yes, but at least I can see what kind of squad he is trying to build and a direction, which is something.

At the end of the day, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, City all have much stronger squads than us. Spurs I would say have a similar squad to us, if not a bit better when/if Kane gets some form, but they also have a better manager.

I want to see us finishing at least 6th this season as you could argue those 5 teams all have some advantage over us for now, which, the club hopes will be caught up on by developing these younger players as a group together, along with 2 or 3 bigger and more experienced signings coming (who knows if this will work or not).

Not sure what you're expecting from us tbh? Yes, we could be doing better, and we should have really beaten United or Everton imo but we aren't far off.

I would expect Arsenal to not have to park the bus every time they get a lead. They shouldn’t be sitting behind a team like West Ham. You may say it’s only halfway through the season but your manager has been there two years. I would expect progress. They’re no better than they were when he took over.

We can literally overtake West Ham today.. you're making it sound like the season is almost done. Literally any of 4,5,6 or 7 can flip each other within 1 game.

Don't get me wrong, I think we should have seen a bit more development over the past few years. I think we've developed relatively well defensively, but offensively we have a lot to do. But, I like the structure of our side, and want to see us with a consistent striker first.

Agree, we should be better with a lead, but unfortunately with a side full of inexperience, that is one of the risks. Again, something I want to see improve with time a bit more.

If we finish below 6th this season, i'll be on Artetas back. But till then i'll stick behind him looking for some more progress.

Or you could lose and be further behind. We can only deal with the facts in front of us.

I would be so wary of judging it based on this if I were you. We had so many posters in here making calculations and doing just that, and it cost us three years and 400 million.

The best judge is by watching the games and seeing what football is being produced. That’s what City and Liverpool saw with their bosses.

The football at United was awful 90% of the time, but people got their calculators out and talked about where Ole could still finish etc…

Arteta is the exact same, Arsenal are really poor to watch most of the time. The football is bad bar all but a few games. He is failing the eye test and, sooner or later, that will catch up to you in terms of position and achievements.

Arsenal still need so many players in order to be taken seriously. A midfield of Xhaka and Partey just won't get it done.

Think it’s a bit of a blessing for them, he’s been woeful this season and when he’s not scoring he contributes very little. I don’t think it was a coincidence they looked better against West Ham with the front line they had (though WH contributed a fair bit with their poor performance)

No indication it's true at all but one rumour I've seen doing the rounds, verbatim:

So the real story is Auba asked for time off to see him poorly old mama in France. Arteta and co, did the right thing and granted him permission. Then somehow Auba’s plane took him to Miami and he met up with his hot stuff bit on the side. There was a feck up with the PJ back and so he had to fly commercial. The poor lamb. Which meant he got back late and jet lagged from a 48 hour bonkathon. Arteta found out and has gone nuclear. Auba off to play in Miami in the winter window…..

Why you so mad, bro?

The really weird thing with this thread (and discussion of Arteta in general) is there are literally people accusing him of getting away with murder on one side… but their opposition is to a much more moderate viewpoint - that he’s doing alright so far given the situation he’s in. I can’t see any arguments for him being crowned Manager of the Year, so the vitriol is intriguing.

Also, Arsenal are currently fourth. Obvious caveats of games in hand and it being halfway though the season apply. But the only Coaches ahead of him at the moment are Pep, Klopp and Tuchel - arguably the top three Coaches in the world.

Our transfer strategy is clearly geared towards the future… and we doing ok in the present.

So why are fans of entirely different clubs so invested?

Believe me, I’m not mad.

I’m also not overly invested. You’ll not see me talking about Arsenal or Arteta all that much. You’re on a United forum though. United fans will compare the critique Solskjaer got to a manager doing a worse job and still being something of a media darling. You have a weird definition of vitriol.

“Vitriol” was hyperbole. I thought that was obvious, but things don’t always translate via text.
