Are there any other sports in the world where the officials aren't expected to explain how they reached their decisions? There's zero accountability at all.

That we don’t ever get an explanation for these decisions is the most infuriating thing.
I think the thinking would be that Fraser isn't getting the ball and that goalkeepers get extra 'leeway' to do dumb and dangerous stuff. It's something that really annoys me. There shouldn't be anywhere on the pitch where you can just wipe a player out nowhere near the ball. If Fraser's feet are planted there anything can happen.

Weve had 2 huge decision go our way the last couple of games. Shocking really how we got the pen vs Wolves and how Newcastle hadn't one today. It is insanity. Some Liverpool 2 season ago style decisions going our way. Refs have to be held accountable

Anyone watching that and concluding the Atkinson didn't make a clear and obvious error needs firing. There's obviously something else going on other than an objective decision based on the footage.
VAR in England is implemented to protect the referees on-pitch decision, not to secure the right decision.

The process when looking at footage from the start is "it there a way to justify the decision that has been made? " rather than the way it should be; "is this a foul?"

In it's current incarnation it is doomed

You nailed it with your first paragraph.

It's rank. Managers/Players that get these decisions need to start calling it out as much as the team that gets shafted.

Eddie Howe was a silly appointment by Newcastle. I was genuinely surprised to see their supporters happy with it.

If Edison doesn’t wipe him out he’s pressing and there’s an open goal as a reward for any mistake.

Yeah I agree, it seems fundamentally flawed. I don't know where they are going with this protect the decision of the precious on-pitch referees thing. The whole clear and obvious error bit is a fudge.

If the team of officials get the right decision then who gives a flying feck if the on-pitch ref didn't see it properly but VAR picked it up. It's infuriating.

Yeah its going to need managers to call this shit out when it goes for them as well as against them for this to change. How anyone could get those 2 decisions wrong with the benefit of video is beyond me. Its ludacris, as the other City fan posted above, the VAR aren't looking to correct decisions, they are looking to back up their friends on field decisions. Its stupid, "We have the technology but we're not gonna use it"

You don't remember us last season at home against Sheffield United?
That was bad, but this was worse. The keeper just stands there when he can easily come out and catch the ball.

Maybe Atkinson told them to feck off ?
The game would have to stop for him to do that. He didn't look at the monitor to watch it again. The people checking it decided it was fine for some reason.

It depends what they're looking for. If you want a manager to get you straight back up from the Champ then it's a decent appointment.

Agree. Been saying that for ages. Referees need to explain decisions on tv or hav a mic on for audience.

Could Chelsea not have a couple of youngsters on the bench at least?

Var always seemed to be met with reluctance by the referees in England so it's no surprise that they seem to be using it to protect the on field decisions.

The difference hearing the rationale for a decision from the ref and VAR (as you do with the ref and TMO in rugby) would make is massive.
