So Barcelona didn’t have the money to be able to give Messi a new contract but a few months later can sped 50+ Million on a player?
I think its the wage bill that's the key issue and I imagine they're planning on off loading a few players in the Jan transfer window to free up the budget.

1612 Premier League minutes. City are about to get 50 odd million for a guy who has played the equivalent of 17 league matches. Barmy.

Except he did play football before he arrived at City

Which merited the £20m City paid at the time. These 17 matches he’s played since are enough for City to make over a 100% profit?

I believe the reduced fee was due to his contract running out wasn't it?

I thought it was a mix of that and Valencia were in the shit.
Well yes that too, so a much higher fee isn't really that surprising, given he has played well for both City and Spain since

I don't understand how Barcelona can buy him, yeah they have the loan but it just seems like... Questionable decision making? Either way. Good signing for them purely on a squad POV, loss for City as I think he's a very good player.

Scary thing now is who will City buy now as a replacement.

Does Haaland have a release clause?

Done deal done deal

That’s not bad at all for City. Can tell he’s got something but for c.€60m given his current contribution to the squad then no brainer. Hopefully reinvested wisely into a top CF.

So Barcelona go through this whole financial crisis, everybody talks about how the club must be run on a more sustainable basis, and their first big move is to spend €60m on a guy who was sold for half that amount 16 months ago and didn't exactly light the world on fire in the interim? Sounds about right.

Great business for City. They obviously have massive resources to spend but their overall acumen in the market is very underrated.

This is what I don't understand, they are meant to be in financial difficulty yet sign Torres and are being linked with everyone else. Where are they finding the money from? Same with Real Madrid been linked Mbappe and others.

M.City paid 23+12 in his last year of contract, F. Torres played in the Spanish national team at a very high level both ST and RW.
It is normal for the price to go up so much.

This is what is difficult to understand for me too. Why are they allowed to drop a huge fee immediately after serious financial trouble.

Laliga has a very strict financial fair play, if Barcelona can sign F. Torres it is because they did their homework before
Barcelona in 2 years lowered the wage bill by about 220M and they want to reduce it further.

Where have they got 65m from?
???

Barca have 120 M for tranfers come this summer from just player sales.

How come people still don’t get the fact (been stated so many times all over the internet and among pundits in TV) that’s it’s La Liga’s financial fairplay rules that prohibits Barca from spending. They have the money.

City didn't pay that much, it was something like £17-18m + 10% from future sale.

Anyway, I think it's a good deal for everyone. He never became a regular for City but's he's a fine player and will do well for Barca as a No.9.

dont they still need to reduce it though for this deal to be viable? Maybe the reports I was reading were a bit out of date.

Let's see transfer fee of 55 m spread over 4 to 5 years which comes to 11 m a year plus player wages around 100 k a week just speculating for Torres compared to 75m -90 m release clause paid upfront and other additional fees and almost 400-500 k wages per week for Halaand if Barca pull that off more power to them.

Outrageous deal from City's perspective, he's a decent player but they've robbed Barca blind with this one.

This sounds like a good deal for both sides. I wouldn't get too hung up on the 50m. That's pretty much the going rate for any decent player in the current market. Barca are getting a very useful player and City are getting a very good fee.
