Why can't they just make the Matrix movie that I want to see; one where they machines have to send Neo into older versions of the Matrix to find a lost anomaly that will prevent some rogue programme from destroying both machine and human life?

And then they find a way to hack the versions so that Keanu and Carrie bring an Apache gunship into 1920s Chicago whilst Jimi Hendrix rides a T-Rex in the background.

Current Wakowski will rob your second paragraph over your first.

Is this worth the £50 to go watch in the cinema?
No, absolutely not. I'm pondering suing Warner Bros to get my money back.
Did you feel it gained anything from you watching it in the cinema?
Yes hearing my friend snore next to me when she fell asleep after 45'
I kinda liked what they were doing at the start, with the extremely meta stuff (at least from the standpoint of, well, it’s different) but it went downhill very fast and by the end I couldn’t even tell you what they were aiming for, it was just a squirrelly mess. So much of it just didn’t work. And also it kinda looked bad?
I was sort of enjoying it up until the White Rabbit sequence, it had an ok balance. And then it just went to shit, proper shit, very quickly and very drastically.

Just watch the original Matrix film. You'll be happier knowing you watched a great film.

Resurrection was a diabolical failure, which shouldn't be a surprise, however the level at which it was so poor is the shocking part.

It would have been more interesting if the machines reprogrammed Neo to become an agent and he was out to kill trinity or the new "one" or something. Theres loads of different directions the movie could have taken that arent the hackneyed cliches of what we got in the movie.

I actually agree that it gets worse as it goes on (some of the action set pieces are OK but nothing special, the acting is really ropey, it looks surprisingly shit and it sort of goes nowhere) but given that the first half an hour includes characters saying "OMG" and "BTDubs" as well as calling Trinity a "MILF" and a witlessly meta montage telling you why the first Matrix movies are great (debatable), that tells you more about how bad it gets rather than being praise for the first part of the movie.

I'm going to swim against the current and say it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it was entertaining, though clunky, nonsensical and just rather silly. The thing I found inexcusable was that the action sequences were so much more poorly choreographed (imo) than the previous films. Bizarre, given how much time has passed and how filmmaking has moved on. It was like they felt they could just get in tight to the action, jiggle the camera around to add immediacy and there you go.

Yeah a lot of the early stuff is fine… a bit on the nose but it’s trying to do something. Lana Wachowski clearly has things to say about The Matrix’s legacy and people using “her story” for nefarious ends, which is a good angle, and more than you can say about most soft rebooted franchise 3rd sequels . But once they actually get back into the whole usual ‘Matrix’ stuff, it’s really messy, doesn’t particularly connect and doesn’t even look very good.

Like, sure, you could say the Merovingian Lost Boys bit is actually all about people unable to move on from the past fighting the concept of change/just wanting the old Matrix schtick exactly the way it was… but it still just looks really naff and comes at a point in the film where it feels very awkward…and it’s all kinda like that.

There’s also never any real sense of where anyones going… In the originals they were always trying to get to a phone cos that’s how they got “out” of the Matrix, but here you don’t have that concept, so they’re all always sort of just going … somewhere? And no one feels in any real danger, but also you don’t really care.

This is how I felt. Didn't have expectations or think it was going to be as good as the first one, but just wanted to enjoy it and re-immerse myself in the world. I enjoyed the first half or so. The meta stuff was interesting and I do think the setup made sense from where the third film left it. But I was also disappointed with the action scenes (for wuxia fans, they should have done better) and the ending was quite disappointing.

Yeah all of that is pretty much spot on. The whole "having a meta stance on the Matrix's legacy" was interesting and honestly I didn't expect it at all so I was happy to see where it would go. Turns out it was going nowhere.

Programs that are magnets, robots that are birds, strawberries, the Catrix, Smith isn’t Smith but is Smith but doesn’t look like Smith, “bullet time”, architect to analyst, and coming in the next installment - probably called Matrix Repercussions - I’m expecting Tobias Funke as the Analrapist.

Just got home from seeing this.

It was pretty wretched, and I'd feel sorry for anyone that pays money to watch this.

I don't really know where to start. The plot was a mess, the acting was hammy (Keanu's acting in his early Morpheus scenes was so poor), the stakes weren't even that high, the action scenes were mundane, and half of the callbacks to the original trilogy just didn't land. The Merv was more comical than anything. Neil Patrick Harris as threatening as Barney from How I Met Your Mother. Agent Smith was ok, shame they couldn't get Weaving back. He probably read the script and passed (for good reason). Also, the 'bullet-time' concept - surely even when he's moving that slow (or normal speed for him but super speed for the Analyst), he'd still be able to stop the bullets using his mind or whatever as he's the one?

Part of the reason the original trilogy / first one was so good was the storyline and underlying philosophy. Free will vs purpose, choice vs no choice, feeling vs program, these dichotomies and how they interplay were really well drawn out. Even though the latter two movies weren't great, there's still that same thread that runs through them that we see in the first. This one it feels like they didn't give it any thought as to the deeper purpose and just wanted some token nostalgic hits. Which is a shame.

As other posters have said, there's so many better storylines they could have come up with - why not this is the next iteration of the Matrix (the 8th cycle), but as Neo chose Trinity in the last movie over saving Zion there's an anomaly where everything else is different but he's the same (call it the Matrix Resumes). I mean, I just came up with that in 5 seconds. The whole meta references didn't land for me - I could see what they were trying to do, but they didn't pull it off.

Some funny moments - when Neo and Trinity are on the roof, there's three helicopters, he diverts a missile from one to another which explodes. Then there's like 2-3 minutes of the movie where Neo and Trinity are just looking at the sky and admiring the tranquility with some cheesy dialogue. What happens to the other two helicopters? Do they see the moment and think they'll give them a bit of time as it's a nice day? It's so contrived. Then they come back a bit later when they decide to jump off the building and start shooting again.

Also, what was the point of Agent Smith in this whole movie? He's kept there by the Analyst as his business partner? Surely he knows that? Then he fights Morpheus who is part Smith anyway, so surely they should be sorta evenly matched in the fight?

Anywho, it's probably the worst movie out of the 4 and by some distance in my opinion.

Characters bitching about having to make another Matrix in the first 20 mins kind of did a good job of setting expectations. There was no storyline or plot to be told so they just threw shit at the wall for a laugh - it led to junk like flying, invisible, dolphin eagles but inspired stuff like the merovingian too. Supremely stupid.

I enjoyed it. It was better than Revolutions, that's for sure. Bit gutted there were no scenes filmed for IMAX, and all the repeated screening of clips from the first movie did was remind us how visually lacking this one was in comparison.

Great score, though.

High praise indeed.

I think I will need to watch this now out of morbid curiosity.

I can't fly anymore obviously. Ah well I'll just have to rely on my bullet stopping forcefield shields and rocket manipulating tricks as that's nowhere near as crazy as flying.

But also, I’ll fly when Trinity flies.

This kinda reminded me of the Resident Evil movies but somehow even more shit and more atrocious acting. And like those movies, it was fun to watch in moments.

When you finish the movie you will see that it is not asking that question :) This is now a very personal battle for Neo & Trinity.

Personally... Erm... I am not sure where I stand. I kind of liked it.
I liked the idea. Hated the execution.

Just felt like one of those films you have on in the background when you are doing something else.... with a bigger budget and some nostalgia to sell it with. Not exactly laughably bad to me like some are getting from it.... just nothingness mostly.

Coasting to a payday. But then again, Keanu's admitted he'll keep doing John Wick's forever if he had too, basically the RDJ-Iron Man retirement game to a lesser extent.

Act 1 was just a mess really. It felt like a SNL skit sending itself up.
Act 2 was boring, the stuff around the machines and new Zion was just so tame and Niobe’s old lady voice was painful. The friendly machines were pure Disney, especially the stingray with pretty eyes.
Act 3 was the best of the lot and having Smith save the day was almost a nice touch but felt somewhat out of character, but then he was designed by Neo so I guess it made sense. Trinity being ’the one“ was somewhat predictable and I’ll give it to Lana, it was probably something she was keen to do considering her own story.

Overall the main thing that bothered me was the distinct lack of any feeling of threat of menace. It felt very much like a video game where nothing really matters and you don’t care what actually happens. There was no purpose to The Matrix outside of The Matrix. What’s the point of control when Machine and Man had found a way to live in harmony? It existed only because it used to exist and a new machine wanted to prove he could make it work. They really missed a trick having one side of the machine war trying to suppress humans and the other half trying to free them.
FFS that spoiled it.

How did I not know the Wachowskis had both transitioned? I was super confused when I saw the name of the director.

Both my brothers who I trust with film reviews said it was a pile of rubbish too. So with your reviews backing that up I think I will watch it if there’s nothing else on

Yeah, I don't understand it at all. I expected it to be full on nonsense like Star Wars, Wheel of Time, etc. But it's quite entertaining and not half bad written. Not sure what the naysayers were expecting.

Absolutely no one expected it to get near the original, yet alone 'top' the original..... the negativity comes from it... just not being very good. If you are calling it a popcorn flick.... then it's bad, that's just a get out of jail free card for bad films really

That's what the original is, and it's what this is. One is better, but there isn't some huge gulf in quality.

Unless you mean specifically the action scenes, in which case I'd agree.

I'm not even sure I recall the term 'popcorn flick' even existing when the original was made. The summer blockbuster scene started to get murdered by Michael Bay in the years following.... he's the pioneer of it. The other term for them being "turn off your brain" movie....

But I guess, sure... but still, the Matrix is highly regarded in it's own right as a sci-fi first and foremost.

It's not this place, majority of people in general hated it, it's just a really bad movie that relies on nostalgy too much.
