No touch from there that I can see.

Cheers.

Well no but he has a load of obvious flaws in his game. A good example today when he had to compete for a high ball with Ryan short arse Fraser - with no other players within 20 yards of them - and opted for a panicky punch towards touch.
I’ll take a flawed DDG over 99% of the goalies in the world.

Could have, or alternatively he could have done what dubravka did against Sancho who Did fumble it after trying to catch it, and nearly cost them a goal. The punch was a good shout imo, and worked out as Fraser did nothing to challenge for the ball.

I certainly don’t think we should replace him with Dubravka. I also think there’s at least 10 other keepers in the league who would have comfortably caught that ball.

Consecutive MOTM against the very bottom of the table teams. Not a good thing at all.

Our best player once again. I was critical of him and hoped he will eventually be dropped for Henderson but he's our most consistant player all season. Would've lost this game without another Dave Saves Masterclass

Think his starting point in that save meant that the save looked harder and more spectacular than it actually was. If you look at it, he didn't have to fully stretch there as well

How many keepers would have made that other save from SM and the other one round the post?

Some ridiculous views on DDGs game yesterday.

He was superb yesterday and made the right decision in nearly every moment.

It's embarrassing how much De Gea has to save us this season. No other top keeper has to make so many saves. The midfield is like a sieve for conceding chances.

People are absolutely right when they say that over a long run a more well-rounded keeper will prevent more goals and add more to the team than De Gea. But that doesn't mean there aren't extended periods where De Gea can compensate with shot-stopping alone.

The sheer natural talent of this guy is something else. I wonder if more could have been done to develop the weaker areas of his game post-SAF if we hadn't been such a mess.

I would rather have him as captain than Maguire. Always talks well, doesn't make excuses for shite performances and he actually seems to give a damn.

Yeah such a shame that the distribution and general command of his area wasn't able to be improved on

Stats backing what the eye-test would probably tell us anyway: his usual flaws remain but for the first season in several years his shot-stopping is more than compensating for it.

Just came to post this. A great thread, which largely supports what meets the eye, although I cannot help but feel that De Gea’s weaknesses to have a greater net negative contribution than what this analysis would suggest.

Imo he was bullied again on corners, like 89` and i think it was 68`, burnley knew he is a weak point and tried to take advantage of that, quite poor ball distribution too

Came off his line at the start of the game to claim a cross and missed it and got a whack

That was it for the rest of the game, on his line as balls consistently got put into the 6 yard area

My concern would moreso be that his current shot-stopping form is a lot less sustainable than just being decent at chance prevention would be.

You likely read too many posts of John Harrison. This fella doesn’t like de Gea at all

There's no "like" about it really. De Gea is what he is, whether you go by what the stats tell you or what your eyes tell you.

I’d like to see GK Twitter thread guy include range and accuracy of passing in his stats. I suspect this is another metric where DDG is miles below par. When we signed him that was supposed to be one of his best attributes but he’s regressed horribly and seems to be one of the worst keepers in the league with the ball at his feet. And, just like sweeping, this is one of the most important qualities for a keeper who plays for one of the stronger teams in the league.

Tarkowski got a header from that corner AWB gave away, he should be claiming that one.

The one at the very end where Maguire ended up on the ground got me. That ball has travelled 60/70 yards and is dropping 7 yards from his goal. There is no way he should have to be making a save from a header there. He should be out claiming that ball.

Used fbref to try and answer my own question.

I’m not fully sure about what all this means but it certainly looks as though he might be as useless at kicking the ball as I feared. Numbers in right hand column are centiles as compared to peers. It’s kind of staggering a club with our ambitions is willing to stick with a keeper who is so much worse than GKs at other clubs by so many metrics.

If I weren't a United fan I would enjoy him being sold and replaced by the likes of Henderson or some other more experienced, better and "modern" keeper, just to see some of your reactions
Gladly I'm...
What do you want? Him to prevent the goals or to have a better passing %? That's not his job
Maguire is good with a ball ain't he, that's why we brought him and gave him the armband

Both of those things are his job. A defender who is amazing at tackling but can’t pass the ball straight would also be a liability.

All that means is that we're not passing the ball back to him a lot, because why would we, and why is that necessarily a bad thing?

He has 98% and 96% pass completion on short and medium passes. Number of passes attempted tells you how many he, uh, attempted. Doesn't say a thing about his success rate.

It’s necessarily a bad thing when it’s such a massive outlier. There will be plenty of other teams that don’t need to pass the ball back to their keeper very often but when 99% of goalkeepers attempt more passes each game then we obviously have a problem. Either the defenders don’t trust him or he doesn’t trust himself. Both scenarios are not good.

Why not?

Rangnick has even said that he prefers his keepers to have as few touches as possible. Even keepers who might be better with their feet than De Gea will still comfortably still be the weakest player technically on the team, so why give the keeper the ball more than you have to?

One of his worse games yesterday. Didn't come out at all to collect high balls and the one time he did he missed the ball. But I guess that's what we get with him.

Nobody is saying we should give the ball to De Gea more than we have to. But if we’re avoiding passing the ball to him more than 99% of other goalkeepers in all of the top 5 leagues (over the past 365 days) then that’s obviously a fundamental problem.

That’s the thing with DDG. All players have strengths and weaknesses. We accept the weaknesses if the strengths make up for it. Take Bruno and his pass completion %. He creates so many chances we kind of have to accept the random shanks into the stands. But his pass completion is 45th centile. Below average. DDG’s weaknesses are not merely below average, they are spectacularly bad. Worst in the league, worst in Europe bad.

As well as being 1st centile for passes attempted he’s also 1st centile for touches. Either he’s deliberately hiding or the defenders are shit scared of passing to him in case he cocks up.

He’s 6th centile for stopping crosses. 5th centile for defensive actions outside of his area. 95% of goalkeepers are better than him at these basic responsibilities. And he’s the best paid goalkeeper on the planet!

There’s no way a team with our aspirations can succeed with such an outlier in goal.
