Maybe should have flicked the header into the RB spot?

However he was excellent. Physically he looked massively improved from my vague recollections of his last game, moving much more smoothly. His courage has never been in question and he is better footballer than many give him credit for. Crying shame what happened to his career.

Should have glanced that header away rather than out to danger.

Says a lot about the rest that he comes in after not having played a game for 2 years and was better than most out there.

Only player on the pitch who looked like he gave a shit about the club he was at.

Rest of them are an embarrassment.

Yeah maybe he could have, but it wasn't totally his fault because I thought that our midfielders should've done better there once he had that cleared.

I thought he was excellent. Better than Maguire has ever been for us for a long time.
Agreed with everything including your conclusion.

Like a fecking Rolls Royce. How shit are the rest when a player out for 2 years comes in and shines like a fecking star.

Classic Jones performance, play like a man possessed the whole game and then gift the opposition their only goal.

People seem to have short memories regarding Jones. He would often come in and provide false hope that he’s finally copped it before having a mare/injury shortly after. He always had talent.

Nothing really surprised me about his performance tonight but I suppose it’s could to see injuries haven’t completely ruined him physically.

I’m really happy to see Jones get the start. Has the club ever publicly disclosed exactly what sort of knee injury he suffered. Anything that takes you out for two years is obviously serious, but I don’t recall the club ever stating what it was. ACL, Gangrene…what?
From his recent interview (the horses mouth as it were) it was a cartilage problem, which I believe was removed causing bone on bone damage in his knee. I can only imagine the physical pain he has been through.

Best player out there today. Looked composed and mature despite all this time away. Literally put his head in for the team, never hesitated. Hope he can keep a good form

Really happy for Jones, showed that he cares, even after all that has happened. I can imagine a number of players not going for that risky header in the dying seconds.

Good to see him back. Shame about the headed assist but now to keep him fit and Maguire out of the team!
Think thats completely unjustified.

Jones won his header as a CB and cleared the box. The problem is that Matic and McTominay our 2 DMs had both gone into the box to act like CBs as well, and they didnt win the ball.

This caused the same problem we had when Fellaini had that spell as a DM helping Lindelof out in the air several seasons ago. If your DM is in the box being a CB who is guarding the edge of the box from shooting chances, the area a DM normally is responsible for? Nobody.

They definitely should have, how they spent the whole ninety minutes losing the 2nd balls in and around our box is beyond me. Felt that Jones played well, he was our third best player behind De Gea and Greenwood.

Good performance after such a long period out. One of the only positives in the game

I can't remember why I joined this war.
Well to be honest it was a pleasant surprise seeing him again. And he didn't even look half bad tbh. Good for him.

Btw does anyone have a picture of the Jones face when he was kicked in the face towards the end?

You can tell he could have been very very good had he just stayed fit.

He would always have wtf moments but good none the less.

Always head the ball on flanks. Never in the middle. Basics ffs.
Solid game overall but gifted a ball for scoring opportunity.

Played like a man that wanted to get his career back. I think that's the big difference and why he could stand out. Ultimately it wasn't like he did anything phenomenal but the way he was charging people down and passing with authority said he was desperate to make a point. Not enough of that on the pitch.

Delighted for him. Realistically he was as good as you can be in such condition.

A typical Phil Jones performance when he plays well.

This is his normal game so nice to see him back to that. Nothing amazing, but good enough as a squad player if he can stay fit.
Still of course worry about his fitness. Worth keeping since I doubt anyone buys him with his injury record.

I think he would be good for Newcastle since they could take a risk with so much money.

Probably the only player who looked decent as he's the only player left who actually gives a toss about the club.

The only positive from a terrible game. So pleased for him he was probably our best player and I hope this game alone gets him a good move- he needs to play regularly

I start him in the cup with Lindelöf as well.

He deserves another start. If he does better than Lindelöf he could start vs Villa too with Varane.

Varane was rubbish, no way Lindelof looses his place to anyone in our team.

Chuffed for him, he did 90 mins as well as played as well as we could have hoped. Hopefully it buys him some respite from the “sack him / stealing a living” morons

Was alright, but I will only give praise if he can string 5 decent performances in a row.

This whole team are kings of playing well for 1 game and downing tools for the next 4.

TBH we all know he's not really a bad defender. He has some brainless moments that I can't deny but he can be solid on his day. The problem is there's nothing to build on regarding this game because we know he'll get injured again soon.

Take a bow Phil Jones.

Being mocked by so many and then stepping up at Old Trafford and putting such a performance in.

Couldn't care less about the header for the goal, it happens. But he fought his heart out as he always do and really looked our best player beside deGea.
