Ok, I assume you’ll stay at your current employer regardless of other offers. Of course you wouldn’t.

I don’t know why people treat footballers so differently to everyone else. Music stars will move labels even if they’re well paid. Actors will ask for raises for sequels. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t seriously consider moving employers for a better offer.

We don’t know what is happening in peoples lives. I remember people slaughtering Oscar for going to China but most didn’t know he had a massive extended family living in abject poverty. He gave up “glory” to make sure they would all be taken care of for generations and that was more important to him than winning trophies.
If Trippier is leaving a team in the CL to fight relegation, compensated with a massive pay hike, to fight abject poverty in his wider family circle then good for him. Otherwise the point is immaterial.

Its not immaterial. You're holding himself to a standard there's zero chance you would meet yourself purely because he's a footballer.

I am pretty sure I wouldn't leave one of the most successful companies in the world, widely regarded as a centre of excellence in the field where I am getting paid several times more in a week than the vast majority of people will see in a year, to take on a role with another company that has a history of failure to earn more money - especially if it's a company that has aligned itself with a murderous regime for the sake of profit.

Are Newcastle really getting him for like 12 mil when we got quoted like 30 in the summer, joke! He’s obviously going there for the money… no other reason he would leave the chance to try and win trophies to trying to save relegation. Be funny if Newcastle sign all these players in January and then get relegated anyway.

Of course you wouldn't.

Your framing is also extremely silly. Most clubs have a history of failure of some sort, Newcastle have had a challenging recent history, but they're a massive club with massive support and you shouldn't just dismiss them, its pretty disrespectful.

You could also frame it as he's approaching the twilight of his career where his contact is expiring, there's no guarantee how much he'd play and what the nature of his new contract would be, he's moving closer to his family and gets work with a manager who gave him his big break. He's also getting in on the ground floor of this project. For an English player winning the PL must be the height of their club aspirations and whilst Newcastle might not be likely to win it before he retires, its the best chance he has available to him now.

I get you don't like Newcastle and their regime, but this whole "professional players shouldn't be interested in their earning potential" is naive and seemingly only reserved for footballers.

Well it doesn't matter what I say, you seem determined to criticise me based on the argument you're having in your own head rather than the points I've already made.
I think we should agree to disagree.

The irony is strong with you, I literally replied directly to your points in my post, something you've failed to do once in return. Let's move on.

What do Newcastle need, in terms of personnel, to reach 40 points? (assuming that will be enough to stay up)

They sit on 11 points with 19 games remaining, so they need about 10 wins from 19 which sounds like a tall order for a team who have only gotten 11 from the previous 19 matches.

I think something like 32 will be enough. The bottom 4 are absolute rubbish.

My point is it's not like there is a compelling reason to leave Madrid for Newcastle, beyond the obvious pay rise - which is negligible when you are already a multi-millionaire several times over, at some point it just becomes greed.

You can’t be serious. We have seen clear examples where nothing clubs like City were able to attract the best players purely for financial reasons. The pay factor is the single most important one.

I doubt we've had many examples of players leaving clubs in the knockout stages of the CL to sign for teams in relegation zones though. This is unprecedented, or it seems to me that it is.
It's a sign of modern top tier football, the globalisation of the game means players have no affiliation to the clubs they play for beyond they pick up ludicrous wages from them.

It must have been an absolutely enormous extended family if his already multi-million pound PL salary wasn't enough to lift them out of abject poverty..

Is Trippier done yet? Have a sneaky feeling they might be going all out for Coutinho vs Villa

Best thing I have heard all day.
