Nigeria (rightfully) fired Rohr before the tournament, which will be viewed as a testing ground for the team before the WC 2 game qualifiers in a few months (that's the main goal).

Interested to see how Egypt perform. Salah is in top form but Egypt have underwhelmed in recent years, they've not won an AFCON since 2010 , Algeria is the top dog in that region right now.

Thanks @adexkola .

Some tasty fixtures the first week.
Burkina Faso vs Cameroon
Morocco vs Ghana
Nigeria vs Egypt
Tunisia vs Mali

Would just like to add their are two United players involved Hannibal (Tunisia) and Bailly (Ivory Coast).

Being half Algerian I hope we go on to win it, but we're favourites and we usually flop hard when we're favourites so my expectations aren't high.

I'm going for Senegal/Cameroon.

Would've added Nigeria as well but unfortunately Osimhen and Dennis couldn't make it. Really hope Watford get relegated for not allowing Dennis to go.

If you have a subscription, read this. It's a great guide on what to expect. Will search for more open source guides and post as I see them.
This stat blew me away.

"AFCON hosts Cameroon have not lost an official competitive match at home since February 1973, when they fell to Zaire, now known as Congo."

I think I'm putting my eggs in the Senegal basket. They deserve to finally win something. They've provided us with so many great players, and wonderful teams over the years.

I'm going to try to keep up with as many games as possible, each game will be a toast to the memory of the prejudiced Klopp.

Bring it on
Nigeria tends to do well when no one expects anything from them
hope they start well and defeat Salah and Egypt on Tuesday

Klopp would probably spend the next few weeks monitoring Egypt and Senegal matches

Why is it always played mid season ?
Do the African leagues break for winter ? That would make sense

Can anyone recommend any players to look out for that could be a "break out star". As in not playing in the big leagues but could get a move after the tournament?

There's no winter in (most of) Africa.

And what is classified as mid season in Europe, is the best time to play football in Africa, as the climate is drier. Summer in Europe is rainy season in (most of) Africa, and football is nearly unplayable.

Most African leagues play through the winter, simultaneously with the tournament.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku is a 17 year old RW for Ghana, plays in the Ghanaian league. Definitely the best u18 talent in the AFCON.

Aliou Dieng is a CM for Mali, plays for Al Ahli in Egypt and has previously been linked with big European clubs. Mali probably have the best midfield in the tournament with him, Bissouma and Haidara.

Youcef Belaili is currently a free agent and plays for Algeria. Was in a Qatari club but has recently cancelled his contract over disagreements. Starts over Benrahma (West Ham) in the LW position for Algeria.

Egypt also have El Shanawy who is a top GK and the CM El Solia who is definitely better than El Neny for examply. Both play for Al Ahly as well. They may not make the move to Europe though as many Egyptian players prefer to stay in Egypt and are getting through their years.

You can find videos on youtube of them. There are plenty more but those are probably the highest rated and will definitely be in Europe within the next couple of seasons. Dieng has been linked with us and Belaili is currently in negotiations with Olympique de Marseilles. Issahaku has been linked with Liverpool as well.

Belaili is an absolute baller. He’ll sign for someone in Europe within the month.

I think Ivory Coast can field the strongest XI. Kessie, Sangare, Haller, Pepe, Zaha, Cornet, Aurier, Bailly, Boly are stars at this level.

I think it's Senegal. Edouard Mendy, Koulibaly, Diallo (PSG),Bouna Sarr (Bayern), Gueye, Kouyate, Mane, Ismaila Sarr.

There's a reason they're one of the favourites.

I agree. I think Senegal are the strongest, but them and Ivory Coast have had a steady pipeline of quality players for most of my lifetime.

That acceleration from Cyrille Bayala  Made up like 5 meters over the defender in 1 second.

Burkina Faso are definitely dark horses. Was really impressed with them in the WCQ when they played Algeria. pretty solid team.

There's always a mistake in them however, it's what holds them back.

People will focus on Onanas mistake but that was actually an incredible finish from Sangare. Barely time to react and a tough volley to score.

It's always funny when keepers pretend to be injured after dropping a clanger
Flashback to DDG

They've had a good team for years too. 2013 CAF finalists and won the bronze medal 4 years later.
