I was watching this earlier and really enjoyed the approach. All time PL XI but you have to build a team to win the league, not just the 11 best players from each position as you so often see (Schmeichel, Cole, Ferdinand, Terry, Neville, Beckham, Keane, Viera, Giggs. Henry, Shearer etc).

Can play with formations, select foils for better players, water carriers and system men, ten workers and a mercurial talent. I like the freedom to be creative! Bit like the great drafts we have on the Caf but in a quick fun fashion.

So have at it - what is your all-time PL XI?

I don't have many problems with that team but I would probably leave out Beckham and Giggs, perhaps even Shearer.

Going with the idea of it not just being the best players, my central idea is that of strong partnerships.

Henry
Ronaldo Bergkamp Robben
Vieira Makelele
Cole Vidic Ferdinand Azpilicueta
Ederson

Ederson allows this dominant team to okay out from the back.

Vidic and Ferdinand require no justification on this forum I’m sure. I wanted to pick a real life CB pairing and while there are some monster CB left out, I think they may be the tightest s and most well balanced I’ve seen.

Cole could overlap into the space Ronaldo vacates. Azpilicueta could also hit the byline when Robben cut in, but is equally comfortable tucking in and preventing and counter attacks freeing Robben to not worry about tracking back too much.

Vieira and Makelele are another real world pairing who dominated midfields at the highest level. Press-resistant, dribbling, passing range, position, strength, speed, stamina, leadership - that midfield has it all.

Bergkamp and Henry. I’m biased, but I think it’s the best strike partnership in Premier League history. Elegance personified. As well as Bergkamp supplying Henry, he would also be loading the bullets for Ronaldo and Robben to fire. Plus Henry would naturally drift to the left creating overloads with Ronaldo and Cole.

I know it’s probably sacrilege to not include Shearer amongst others, but that’s my team.

Reckon that would do quite nicely for a 442. Or I we wanted to get a little more modern formation wise..

I like this, it's about pieces fitting together rather than the best pieces in every spot.

If you're going partnership's to win a league how do you overlook Keane and Scholes and then Ronaldo and Rooney. They all won plenty.

Couple of surprises in that OP video. All of them have VDV . Can't believe people have such short memories when it comes to CBs.Someone also said , Fernandinho is better than Makele .

Nice concept though. Rather than the best available players, they are trying to get the best players to fit the team.

Gerrard at RB was funny. I would have taken Beckham instead. Bale at leftback is also something I don't agree.

For Me:

A 343:

Schmeichel

Ferdinand Vidic Van Dijk

Beckham Fernandinho Keane Ashley Cole

Ronaldo Cantona (false 9) Henry

GK - Best keeper in the league with the presence and leadership to keep a steady backline

Defence - The pace and ball playing ability of Rio and Van Dijk. For me Vidic is the best PL centre back. I always had faith that when he was in the box, no crosses would truly threaten our goal. In the Premier League, that assurance is potentially the greatest defensive currency.

Midfield - Beckham's workrate and crossing make him invaluable in terms of chance creation, whilst keeping shape. Especially when the front 3 get narrow, being able to pick out one of Salah, Cantona or Henry. Keane was the obvious choice in midfield as the energy, tackling and ability to keep the tempo up in games would make it hard for teams to keep up with us. In addition, his ability to pass to feet consistently would allow the team to get the ball in higher positions up the pitch against deeper teams. Fernandinho could also do this, but his ability to also play box to box would allow a perfect midfield partnership with Keane as both could sustain tempo or venture up the pitch. Ashley Cole would provide the defensive presence and shape whilst also being capable of venturing up the pitch. His combinations on the left with Henry would be deadly.

Attack - It would be more of a diamond, with Cantona dropping deeper to hold when trying to go through the middle. His balance, vision and creativity make him perfect for this. Ronaldo's ability to make runs from wider areas would allow the team to stretch the opposition, plus his off the ball runs with Cantona's passes, Van Dijk's/ Rio's long balls or Beckham's crosses make him a must have. Henry is by far the best forward in league history. In this team, his ability to drift out wide and pick up the ball would make him an additional creative threat. Like Ronaldo, the long balls from our defenders would be deadly. He would also provide the outside the box shooting threat for the team.

Henry and Ronaldo's wide interchangability could make this a 4411 at times.

Such a hard team to pick there's too many good players. I think I went a bit biased with Keane and Viera because we have McFred now ha. It was a coin flip with Henry and Rooney.
How could I leave out Giggs, Henry, Shearer, Beckham, Scholes, Ferdinand, Gerard, RVN, Drogba, Makalele, Essien.

Great shout. Not a widely held view, but I still think no Chelsea player has touched 2004/5 Arjen Robben levels of performance.

These sorts of scenarios are difficult because the game has changed so much. If the question is to pick a team of players in their prime and transport them to 2022 to win the league, then you're probably not going to see too many players from previous eras.

Neville on his podcast last week was saying how he only retired in 2011 and he doesn't recognise the game now compared to when he played, the pace and intensity is higher and it's more advanced tactically. The high defensive lines, high pressing, play out from the back at all costs would be a big adaptation for players from previous eras to get used to. In terms of professionalism, players in the 90s were going out drinking after every game so I don't think you could just transport them to 2022 and expect they'd still be the best players in the league. This is why it's difficult to compare players from different eras. If they had developed in this era with this level of professionalism and had time to adapt then it's a different story, because clearly the talent is there in previous eras.

Just as an example, I don't think any of the top coaches are picking Schmeichel over Allison/Ederson because playing out from the back is too important to them.

Likewise Neville is always considered the best premier league RB but I've heard him raise concerns he wouldn't be quick enough to be an elite full back in today's game. Then you have these assist machines like Cancelo, Trent etc. who I think would all be picked by the top coaches to win the league in 2022.

I like a lot of that, but with a 343 I think you could go more adventurous than Fernandinho in midfield. Keane is enough defensive solidity with that solid back 3 and Beckham and Cole manning the wing backs role. Could bring someone like De Bruyne into the middle or go simple and move Scholes in there.

I think I would go for…

Ederson

Ivanovic
- Ferdinand - VVD - Cole

Yaya
- Carrick - Kante

Rooney
- Shearer - Ronaldo

Ederson allows for quick distribution on the counter. Ivanovic was a quality defender at his peak and can “tuck in” to give Cole license to roam into the space left by CR7. Plumped for the two top footballing CBs who were both quick and extremely composed.

Yaya was a force of nature at his peak and was unplayable when on his game. Surprisingly graceful with great feet for such a big man. Kante is not the furthest man back and has the license to win the ball back in midfield. Carrick sits behind as the six, well protected and allowed to pick out players ahead of him on the break.

Shearer is the best number 9 in PL history and would keep defenders busy. He could do absolutely everything and was extremely physical to boot. Rooney and Ronaldo would make the most of the space with their pace and energy and were both capable of the sublime at their peak.

Perhaps a slight lack of genuine width, but it would be a side that would be extremely difficult to break down, or even get in behind with the pace at the back. Blistering on the counter and a threat at set pieces. Feel comfortable enough sacrificing width for the talent and work rate.

It’s funny how people live in the past and leave out the best player from a team that notched over 100 points in the league. A feat Sir Alex and Wenger could only dream about and never achieve.

Kevin de Bruyne without injuries and in sustained form is better than most.

Both brilliant partnerships, to be sure. Considering the talents ahead of them and the attacking nature of my left back choice, I think the defensive acumen of Makelele and Vieira provides better balance to the team than Keane and Scholes. And although Rooney and Ronaldo played together, it wasn't the type of strike partnership I was referring to. One was usually on the wing. I was looking for a traditional striker duo where one plays off the other centrally.

If I've understood the question correctly, its not about how many times players lifted the trophy. After all, so far I've only seen Giggs picked once. On a United forum. And even then, it was by an Ajax fan.

I don’t think it’s “living in the past” to not include de Bruyne. Man City have always been more about the collective with Pep. Not to mention that a lot of the chosen players did it for a lot longer at a really consistent level.

He should be in the conversation, but “better than most” doesn’t mean “has to be in the team”

I was going to bring this up. It's interesting how City are going to win 4 out 5 titles. And even the one they missed out on was a fantastic league campaign from them. And yet, their players are practically nowhere to be found.

In my particular case, if I wasn't trying to include real world partnerships then de Bruyne may well have replaced Bergkamp (if for no other reason than balance - with Ronaldo and Robben on the wings it might be better to have a midfielder rather than a forward at 10).

But I think it supports the argument that Man City's success is the result of more than just money (although the money is very much a requirement). Not only does Pep improve players individually, but he gets his teams to play as more than the sum of their parts. Kompany, Toure, Fernandinho, Silva, de Bruyne, and Aguero were all seriously top class. Of those six, only Fernandinho and de Bruyne are still there. One is 36 and the other is often injured. When you go through the rest of their team - none of them (Dias aside) are actually world beaters. Squad depth, consistent top class coaching and a club that was basically set up to hire a particular manager mean that for the first time we have a club that's basically immune to:
  • Injuries
  • Illness
  • Suspensions
  • Loss of form
  • Transfers
  • Even retirement
Aguero leaves - no problem. Stick literally any of your front five players in his place as a false nine and have the league sown up by December.

You can see why someone like Kyle Walker would be drawn to it. After years of no trophies, signing for a coach that turns players into cogs of a winning machine would be bliss. On the other hand you can see why Ibrahimović would hate it. Especially as any little capacity Pep had to indulge individual genius within his team would be consumed by the presence of Messi.

Pep as manager. I'm sure Sir Alex and Klopp could get a tune out of them as well but Fernandinho, Scholes and KDB are tailor made for a Pep press the life out of everyone and tactical foul their way to glory, plus superb on the ball. Rio and VVD both excellent on the ball for a Pep system, which is why they get in ahead of Vidic, Kompany and co. The winger would press and well the front 3 are magic, Ronnie could drift inside while Henry drifts out to the left like he loves (Ronnie and Benzema used to do it all the time). My big worry would be Cech on the ball compared to someone like Ederson but the team had a serious lack of Chelsea legends and it was unfair. Under any other manager I'd go for Cole over Cancelo and maybe Neville or Ivanovic over TAA.

I don't for a second believe Trent is the best RB in PL history but he'd be phenomenal in a Pep system.

Always tough to leave players out like Scholes, Rooney etc but I tried to get a balance of the best dominant teams from the PL era i.e. Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and City. Lampard is a bit of a outlier as I don't think technically he was better than a lot of other CM's, however in real life not sure how you can leave out a CM that gets you 20+ goals a season.

RB is the toughest area to pick as well. The current crop of RB/RWB's will probably end up in there in a few years' but at the moment they still haven't done enough. Ivanovic gets may nod just about as he was a good blend of top (if not elite) defender and goal getter in the opposition box.

I'd pick a Pep XI too but:

-definitely a better sweeper and passer than Cech, I guess either Van Der Sar or Allison

-Probably prime Suarez or Kane over Henry even if Henry was better, I'd be worried he wouldn't fit as a lone 9. I could also see playing Salah as a 9, Cristiano on the right where he played for us as a better version of Gabi Jesus and then maybe Bale as a better Leroy Sane.

-Fernandinho can be improved. Probably Kante since he'd kill counter attacks and is underrated as a short passer.

-I can't decide if you're right about the fullbacks. I'd probably go with Cole at LB because he'd be so good at stopping counter attacks and you get some width on his overlaps, then either Cancelo or Trent at RB for the attacking play. But if I'm going with Bale at LW stretched wide then Cancelo at LB looks good.

-Scholes vs David Silva is tough. Tempting to go with Scholes and then if the other team is parking the bus well or up a goal you could age Scholes forward 5 years and move him back to DM until he gets a yellow and get Silva (possession, passing) or Lampard (goals) as the other 8.
