Shenmue 2 is much better than 1, but both have aged very poorly. When they release they were quite ground breaking though. Even if the controles were already clunky for standaards back then I'd say.
I didn't like 2 as much myself. Much preferred the cosy vibe of the first game with all it's familiar nooks and crannies. Though thematically Ryo being lost in the gritty streets of HK does suit the story at that point

Nier Automata would be my top choice followed by Final Fantasy 9.

Nier Automata clearly has the best soundtrack from any game.
I was going to respond to that FF is by far the best soundtrack post with Nier Automata. Fantastic soundtrack.

I should really replace it with Shemue tbh, thought I'd actually deleted it and changed it to Shemue :/ feck knows where or who I've randomly typed "Shemue" to

Its crazy how strong nostalgia is, i never bothered with shenmue when it was originally released so thought i'd try the remasters when the latest one was released and it lasted about 30 minutes the game was so bad it was unbelievable the control scheme had aged so badly i couldn't move past it.
It's remarkably condescending to attribute my opinion to nostalgia. Also inaccurate.

It was a revolutionary game that represented a huge step forward at the time - graphics, the open world that actually felt alive, branching choices and multiple ways to progress the story, etc.

It's certainly aged, and newer games have adopted and polished those features, but it was groundbreaking and still has a depth few other games have managed.

Still, it could be quite slow, so if you need non stop action a la COD then it makes sense that you wouldn't like it.
