Yes, I think he is doing a good job after inheriting a broken club. The dressing room is split, we have too many players playing for themselves and there are structural issues in the club.

I saw progress yesterday in the big things, such as dominating Villa for good periods of the game and the little things, Mason making some selfless decisions.

I wanted a manager who would take no shit from the squad and be willing to play the best performers and Ralf is showing he is willing to do that.

Difference being the squad was unhappy with the manager under Jose, when he left half the problem was solved. In our current situation the players are unhappy due to lack of gametime or their contracts are running down.

I agree with your match management though I have been expecting more from Ralf, it was obvious yesterday we was getting overrun in midfield Donny should have been on much sooner.
Players were unhappy with Ole towards the end, for various reasons. He was digging a hole for himself by more or less opting for the same players, no matter how poorly they played, while the alternatives were barely getting a sniff of first team football. It's not like Ole was completely wrong to lose faith in certain players, but when the rest of the players aren't performing, and results are bad, it's a circle where the atmosphere will sooner or later go to shits.

It's just a bit of a surprise for me that Ralf is this passive. It's easy to say the right things, especially about being proactive, but it makes it more difficult to understand and accept how passive he is when the opposition is controlling the match and players are running on fumes. During the first half it was fairly obvious that Cavani struggled to get involved in the match, he was more involved when we didn't have the ball, so you expect the manager to take notice and come up with a plan that either sees him improve his overall performance or sub him off for someone else. Just fecking do something, instead of walking down the same path that's seen the opposition take more and more control of the match.

As I said when I bumped the thread, I thought yesterday was the first time we didn't play tumescent crap. If it weren't for some terrible subs we'd have had a good away win.
i dont think it was good. I think we weren't terrible at the start of the game, but that doesn't really mean we were good. In the second half we saw our centre backs kicking long. As villa came back into the game neither Ragnick or the players decided it would be best to just pass the ball square and stop them having any possession. When you are protecting a 2 goal lead and the opposition are finding their feet why keep giving them the ball back? Brunos goal was a fluke and Villa had more possession and more shots on target. We probably are lucky to have a point in the end.

If I were him and the board don’t move on a few of the rotten apples and bring in a CM this window, I’d walk at the end of the month. Call them out for what they are.

I am not claiming to be a bloody manager, but with 20 minutes to go I would have changed to a 3-5-1-1 and defended that 2 goal lead. Really think the changes were late and wrong.
PS. We need a couple of midfielders. One we can get for 6 million. Why are the board not backing him. ??
And then we will say how dare we defended for 20 mins . We are man united.

He's also responsible for his positioning very high, it was mad how high Fred went with his press. Of course it worked for the 2nd goal but after that there was no need to persist with this. It left Matic way too isolated
Agree. I have no problem with Fred playing so high because he is an excellent trigger to start the pressing of CBs but then you need better CM than Bruno to partner Matic.

He asked Fred to go up, leaving 2 yellow carded midfielders to play as CM.

Considering the current form and the dire need if points, I doubt any sane person would care
He is still learning. We are fundamentally changing how we play the game. Kind of how LVG was. Lot of draws, frustrating losses.

Patience is needed. We need couple of midfield signings too.

By Feb , think we will have a blue print on how we play.

The bad news is we have alot of average/ageing/surplus players.

The good news is we have alot of average/ageing/surplus players that are coming to the end of their contracts.

Shaw, Matic, Mata, Pereira, Lingard, Jones, Bailly, Fred, Ronaldo, Cavani.

I don't think any of those have more than 2 years left on their deals so there is an opportunity to get rid now or release at the end of their contract.

We could feck up by offering any of them contract extensions. We could also feck up by not replacing them.

This is where I think we should be in 2 years. Two players for each position.

De Gea
Signing

AWB Varane Signing Signing
Dalot Lindelof Maguire Telles

Pogba Signing
Signing McTominay

Sancho Fernandes Rashford
Amad Shoretire Elanga

Greenwood
McNeill
Garnacho

3 first team top class players and two squad players. If Pogba leaves then its 4 first team top class players needed.

If our club were genuinely ambitious we could achieve that in one year nevermind two.

Sancho Greenwood Rashford can be moulded into first choice players by a good coach like Rangnick/other.

McNeill, Elanga, Garnacho and Shoretire are the pick of the youth team and I want to see them integrated into the first team over the next 12 months.

SELL and replace - Shaw, Matic, Mata, Pereira, Lingard, Jones, Bailly and Fred.

Keep until end of their deals - Ronaldo and Cavani.

Cannot disagree with any of this.
We haven't hired any elite manager at their peak post Sir Alex that's the boards biggest fault. All the managers we have gotten don't look out of place in a mid table team.

Who exactly is in charge at this club?

We've had players throw manager after manager under the bus as soon as they've had enough, and now have players who are even refusing to travel and be part of the squad. What in the actual feck has this club become?

Imagine a player not wanting to travel to be part of the squad under Fergie. Or even under Klopp or Guardiola. We need a manager that not only has the courage to challenge and call these players out of their bullshit, but also a manager that will have the full backing and conviction of the board to oversee some of these "controversial" decisions.

I don't want to re-write history, but with the benefit of hindsight, would the team have been any worse off if Mourinho had been allowed to get rid of the likes of Pogba, Martial and Shaw? Maybe Mourinho was too extreme, but this squad needs cleansing and a manager not afraid to call them out on their shit and shift them out if need be. Get them back in line.

I think the sub issue is because we have no one on the bench capable of changing the game.
The game did not need changing we were already 2-0 up. Just managing with an extra midfielder. Cavani was having his worst games in a United shirt and taking him off would have given us the likely control to see the game out.

When people understand that industry understanding is almost always secondary in leadership. Inside and outside of football - they will understand why Ralf is almost doomed for failure.

I will cap it with what I always cap my Ralf points with. This Ralf Ragnick appointment will end in nothing but tears.

Ralf said Martial didn’t want to be in the Squad.

Martial said he would never refuse to Play for United.

Both statements can be True.

If you choose not to be in the squad, then by definition, you are choosing not to play for the club. fecking Martial trying to spin this shit.

I missed the first half yesterday, but read somewhere that the first half hour was the best we've been under Ralf and that we did well??

Can somebody please confirm and if yes, what was it that was so good? And then why did we turn to shit?

Really hope Ralf can turn this around...in our current state I'm not sure even Pep could.

I understand your point but you can't manage a game under the impression, that every sub "changes" a game. Sometimes you bring in a player only to cement the status quo. Obviously there isn't another midfielder like Matic in our squad but football is a numbers game to some degree. Leave Matic on but bolster the midfield. Bring VDB to play a false nine or put Bruno there. Bring in Lingard for some movement and grit. We were up by two goals and the game was relatively even, just shut the door and all is fine.

I also expected the manager to be a little more hands on to be honest. But it still is early days and he probably doesn't really know, who he can rely on. Especially as both players mentioned are pretty clearly looking for a move away. It really is a tricky situation. I hope we are not wasting too much time... I mean, I hate to surrender the season but if we do, at least try and experiment stuff so we know a little more for next season. If we want to stay in it, go back to the basics, at the end of the day, we can always revert to a counter attacking tactic with a low block. It certainly isn't the prettiest, certainly not the usual RR way but you have to make a decision. Either be progressive or get results. I hoped, both would be possible at the same time, but it doesn't seem to be that way.

Yes. The way we were set up and played was the best we have played under Ralf.

Matic faded fast and was lucky not to be sent off. He was the main reason they got through our midfield.
Ralf does not see Donny as a DM or he would have brought him on for him earlier.
He took a calculated risk we would hold on for a win. The late subs were to get a winning goal, which almost happened.

The fault for what happened lies squarely with the board which has not to date brought in a DM.
Villa had two players who came in this window.
The difference between a Football board and one that is only interested in bleeding us dry.
Football to the Glazers is just an annoying reality.

I think, calling it the best we've been is OTT by a lot. I don't like this better or worse stuff, you can be better without being good. But the sample size of reference performance under RR is small. I still think, the best we have been was Crystal Palace. The first half yesterday we were pretty controlling. Aston Villa didn't really have a sniff without us being all over them. We had some nice passing moves, were progressive and attacking. Bruno played like a real midfielder which I think, helped a lot with the cohesion. Cavani was more or less a non-entity, same as the whole attacking unit who didn't really achieve much without being poor. I think, Aston Villas setup is just as big of a factor in the game as our own play. The first goal was a howler, the match was more or less a draw. In the second half we stayed alright but the mistakes started. And as many said, there were no subs. We conceded from two moments of missing concentration, not because we were outplayed (at least I didn't perceive it as that).

Well each to their own but there is so much "stuff" in that post, that doesn't really help us in any way shape or form. The owners spent more than a bit of money on transfers in the last years, I certainly won't defend them but that constant drumming feels so pointless. The only thing I accuse them of, is not making sure we had the best available people making the sports-related decisions.

Like I said in the midfield thread we need Zakaria and one of those other three linked with us in January, so either

Zakaria & Kamara
Zakaria & Haidara
Zakaria & Kessie

Any of those is an improvement on now

I agree with that, we need strengthening in midfield. Who the players are , I am not too sure. Zakaria is somewhat of an unknown, I'd take him with a 2-year contract but thats about it. No point in bringing somebody who isn't available then most of the time. I would also push for Kessie. Haidara I don't know. I like him, but he is suited to a different kind of football as we play it. And while I like that kind of football - I am unsure if most of the current squad is suited for it.

Yes, first half Villa could hardly get out of their box, we constantly attacked and pressed, playing quick one touch football. We started off really well, something we never saw under Ole where we always started off crap. That's a change for a start.

Agreed. That's what I thought too.

After the second goal it seemed our players were thinking the match was over and lost their concentration.

We were outplayed regardless of how we conceded the 2 goals. We were completely dominated second half.

Spending money to generate shirt sales and spending wisely to strengthen the team are two different things.
Jose wanted ready made players. They did not back him because no resale value.

Was Ronaldo this season necessary? A solid DM would have ensured we had a proper team out there.
Matic is done and should have been replaced in the summer. We could have gotten 2 solid players as DMs.

Theses parasites we have as a board are the prime reason why this club is in a shithouse.

Once again. They are not interested in the football club.
We are a shell.
I doubt we will return to being a football club.

We pressed? I haven't seen that to be honest... Fbref says we had 110 presses yesterday, were successful 26 times (compared to Aston Villas 148 presses and 52 times), against Wolves we had 148 presses and 36 successes. So even if the method of counting that stuff might have issues, comparing it makes sense. We didn't press against Wolves, we didn't press yesterday.

I'd love to bring in 2 new central midfielders. Rangnick take them to one side and say look guys these boys are shite so you need to give me everything you've got, a couple of new players not brainwashed by previous regimes that will give everything just to be in a United shirt.

And yet people celebrated us getting Ronaldo. I was against that transfer as well but the majority wasn't. I'd even say the majority was fine with us bringing in an RW and a very good CB. As I said, I agree with you, we should have gotten a midfield player but that applies to each year since 2017 or 2018. Its bonkers to think, we would be soooo much better off just because one player. It is a team sport, other teams make it work without certain types of players - we could have too.

Yadda yadda yadda. You miss one thing - being successful in the sport makes you successful in the business. If they wanted the easy route, they didn't have to invest Maguire or Sancho. Money isn't the issue. Our club is the prime example that it takes more than just the funds to get success.

You signed Sancho, why going after ronaldo instead of a defensive midfielder?

This squad is unbalanced and lacks discipline, even Guardiola will struggle with these players, Ralf is not a magician, the board should get him a midfielder for crying out sake.

You have missed the entire point obviously.

A football board would have made proper football decisions that ensured the club's success.

Saying yadda yadda means you don't understand the issues.
That last point amplifies it.
Going to the previous successful manager to find the next manager was the lazy idiotic thing to do.
A football board would have hired football consultants to get the next manager.
