There is a constant space given to the attacker by him.

I don't understand the thinking with Dalot to be honest.

I would say AWB is an excellent defender but an average attacker. Dalot is a poor defender and, whilst being a better attacker than AWB, I don't think there's enough in it to justify his place in the team.

Of the two we should stick with AWB and coach him to play a similar role to us that Walker plays for City.

What we should probably actually do is sell one and bring in someone like Tariq Lamptey

No. Greenwood was the one not doing his job defending. Left Dalot alone multiple times.
Do you really believe this? Dalot has never been positionally sound and Villa aggressively targeted his side during their second half onslaught. It's a constant criticism he got at Milan as well on loan.

Classic Keown tonight. Just nonsense all game.

A bizarre level of praise for Dalot.

Did good tonight on defense. Not so much on a attack. If he can do both he will be really useful. And definitely better than AWB.

Good game. Better than AWB. He needs to get his crossing on target.

Nothing special, but as long as he is being steady without making big mistakes, he will be fine and might be integral part of the team.

He was terrible in the first half when Brentford were on top but looked better in the second. His positioning is still poor and his crossing overrated

Why was it bizarre? He did very well.

AwB isn't winning half the headers he won today.
Yeah a good handful of headers. But outside that I thought he was poor. Nothing going forward and that looseness to his game at the back. Could have cost us a couple.

You can't be getting that level of praise for a few headers.

Admittedly I don't like him at all as a player.

He's probably not good enough to nail down the right back spot but he's so far clear of Wan-Bissaka, it's unreal.

I've thought he doesn't have it as a player and that he cannot play in a back four. But surely you've got to admit tonight he was very good. And I've changed my mind about him. I definitely prefer him now to AWB. He's shown more pace than I thought he had too.

He was written off by the vast majority on here.

Glad he is turning it around, there’s always been a good player there.

Did really well defending from Toney at the back post on several occasions.

I didn't think he was good enough to even be a squad player but he's proved me wrong

I always knew he had pace but my opinion hasn't changed. He's got errors in him. A lack of IQ. There were a few tonight he just got away with them.

Did you think he did anything going forwards?

He’s by no means a great player, but so far above AWB that it makes me wonder just how ole persisted with the latter for so long

Though I don’t think he will ever be accepted as the first choice at right back over the coming seasons because I expect we will promote Laird/dip into transfer market, but right now he has ousted AWB as our first pick. He is proving to be a good player for the team this season.

Is he first choice yet. He should be. At least in these sorts of games where we have a lot of the ball.

Looking over my shoulder.
He’s much faster than I thought. His top speed is really impressive. Good on the ball, good in the air, but lacking end product. Sometimes he takea too long on the ball and loses it in dangerous positions

Brilliant tonight. Although it seemed he played as a Wing back in defence and spent more time narrower as an extra midfielder in attack.

It seems like it's his first full season regularly playing at the top level, so there's definitely a higher peak he can reach with greater exposure and experience.

Imagine if we invested the game time we wasted on AWB instead on him. No point hoarding young players, if you're not going to play them.

It was a joke that we let Ole spunk £50m on AWB just a year after we'd invested £20m on a 19 year old Dalot.

Yeah, and you just know that half of this forum has swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

Dalot did OK tonight. If I was evaluating that performance fairly, I'd say two sloppy passes put us in real trouble twice (their first big chance was a terrible giveaway and there was a second midway through the second half), his attacking play, which he is supposed to be good at, was non-existent, despite us having most of the ball, and he stood up and did his job at the back post a couple of times to win his headers. That's it though, did his job, not exceptional headers or goal-saving headers, just headers you have to win as the fullback.

Whatever people think about AWB, I do not believe Dalot is any kind of long-term answer. Imagine if Dalot had given away those two passes, or shanked that early crossing chance into the crowd....there'd be hundreds rushing over to the AWB Performance Thread.

Exactly. Ole really made some weird calls in his tenure here.

Thought he was fantastic in the air, especially for a full back. Also good defending inside the box. But my God he is poor as last man defending counters when we have corners. That made me miss AWB.

To be fair it is increasingly obvious that Ole had nothing to do with transfers regardless of what was said to the press. He quite clearly did not want VDB and it certainly seemed like he didn't rate Telles either.

He looks a bit soft but that’s his style which probably won’t change in the future. But, he is very smart. Good performance.

I really believe this lad has a future here. He deserved this run in the side way earlier than he's getting, but he's getting better every game.

Poor early cross. Got us in trouble with a rubbish pass in our defensive third, leading to numerous chances for Brentford. Good shot from distance that was just wide. Defended well in the 2nd half. Not sure he knows what to do when the opposition are counter-attacking after our corner.

It's happening.

What I would say is that he's toughened up a bit. For a lad his size I thought he was really soft before the Milan move.

Yes, I think he stretched play and won the ball high up as well. I thought the whole team bar de Gea underperformed in the first 45. Do you think AWB has been performing better? That's the only relevant question.
