Fair enough but if those where his reasons then there was no point in even engaging in a potential transfer at all. And nobody can be a guaranteed starter at any team whether it be United or Bordeaux.
Quite simple; If the other club had said “Phil we need someone with your experience to help steady this defence. You will compete with the others but as long as you’re fit there will be plenty of playing time”.
He would have gone.
Anyway I suspect he will go in the summer, there will be interest

Think Ralf should play Jones as much as possible for rest of season alongside Varane. They looked okay together vs. Wolves. If he only plays a few minutes we will never know if he is over his injuries and no-one will be interested in summer. Harry can take a break and Lindelof rotate occasionally.

I find it amazing a player that has missed 78 games due to injury over the last 18 months alone wants a guarantee of playing time.

Unless we have some sort of injury crisis, he's clearly not part of Ralf's plans - which is why he was being allowed to move.

Even if he wasn't given some sort of guarantee of playing time (something not a single player is entitled to, especially one with his track record) he must surely back himself against the other centre-backs that are at Bordeaux to quickly make an impression and get into the team.

And we're talking about France for a few months, a real opportunity to get his career back on track, not China on a 5 year deal. It's close enough where he could still visit his family now and then.

Obviously there'll be staff on here that won't like this, and will defend him until their blue in the face, but he didn't fancy this fight. He's happy getting next to zero football for the rest of the season.

If you want to sell him I think you're better off not playing him. He'll surely get injured if he plays. As it stands he not injured, 'sold as seen' is the way to go.

You'd have to assume that's what he was told though. They aren't going to try to get someone on loan who's on a much higher wage than any of their current squad to just sit on their bench. If Phil didn't want to move for family reasons I'd totally understand that's fair enough, but if that were the case he probably wouldn't have entertained the move at all.

Having said all that with Varane's injuries, Maguire's form and Bailly being Bailly. Having Phil around until the end of the season isn't the worst thing, if he's fit he should be playing ahead of Bailly.

Yep, I think he’s looked at that and said I fancy my chances here of some time. I don’t need to move somewhere abroad where there’s no guarantee I’ll be first pick anyway. People are saying that it shows a weak mentality, I think the opposite if he’s determined to get chances at United.
But anyway good luck to the fella

The unknown factor in all of this is that we don't have any idea what his conversations with Ralf have been like. I know the club gave their blessing but Ralf may still have indicated that he would get a decent amount of minutes here. If for example Ralf has indicated that he sees him as ahead of Bailly in the pecking order and that he may even use him as a defensive midfield option off the bench when we are looking to protect a lead then he might well reason that would be better than an uncertain amount of playing time in a different league. We can only really judge the soundness of this decision in hindsight so I guess by summer we will know if he made the right choice.

I can't believe he turned down the chance to revive his career on loan with Bordeaux over (rumored) game time assurances. There shouldn't be a reason for him to turn down that opportunity, he needs it more than any other.

Just who does Jones think he is? I'd like to know what role his advisors have in him clinging on to a lost dream at united.

The likes of Smalling and Young for instance moved abroad and gained respect for it. Many of our current fringe players are desperate for loan moves to try and salvage or restart their careers and here we have Phil Jones turning his nose up at a team offering him a chance. Stealing a living is his biggest talent at this point, and it kinda mystifies me that the club and many in the fanbase seem to be ok with this.

Maybe he feels the club have looked after him, and he’s determined to pay them back. He looked okay when he played. I would love nothing more than for Phil Jones to prove all of the doubters wrong, and cement a place in England defence.

How long have you been hoping for this? We've had sooo many false dawns with Jones. His determination is misplaced because at this point it's not even about proving doubters wrong or proving loyalty to the club, he should be doing any and everything he can to salvage his career whether that involves United or not.

I've seen some make the excuse about maybe Jones not wanting to unsettle his family. Those are real concerns every footballer faces and yet they still make hard decisions to switch clubs in favor of outcomes that lead to (hopefully) more game time. Jones is not the only footballer with a family.

Even if he doesn't get much game time on loan you'd think a change of scenery and a fresh challenge away from united could give him a new perspective in his football journey. It's United or bust for him

Why would Jones go on loan without a guarantee of more game time than he is getting now? He would be an idiot to do so. And ludicrous statements like "stealing a living" make you look like a drama queen. He is fulfilling the contract United wanted him to sign.

For all those wetting themselves about playing time assurances - we have heard the club say they will ‘manage his body’ after his return from injury. He may well be in a Ledley King type situation whereby it’s not in his best interest to play every game - for all we know he might have turned it down for too much playing time demand if they are that useless in defence. We should trust Phil and the club, and expect both to act in his best interests which this deal clearly wasn’t.

If it is only his first major long term injury, then it makes sense. Jones has been injuring for so long and so often, and there is no solution for this.

The club in case agreed the loan offer, only for Jones to decline. So clearly both parties are not in agreement on the matter. How can we trust them when there is such conflict interest?

Why would any club give such a guarantee to a player that has missed more than 80 games through injury in a little over two years?

The club has carried him for long enough, we owe him no favours. Surely the onus is on the player to back himself into getting into that Bordeaux team and make himself a regular. He wouldn't have been up against elite competition. He clearly wasn't up for the challenge.

And I certainly wouldn't say he has "fulfilled his contract". That would suggest he's been readily available when called upon and we're happy with his contribution. You're making it sound like he should be given props for labouring on with the contract United gave him, as if he had any other option.

Fix the broken record. You were in the minority yesterday and no doubt it’s the same today so do yourself a favour

You make it sound like it’s his fault. He literally fecked his body up playing for United, putting his head where others are afraid to put their foot in. The guy deserves a bit of respect instead of constant moaning from a bunch of childish whiners

These 'childish whiners' : I very much doubt this pathetic bunch are United supporters. They hate the club and its players. and vitiates the atmosphere of this forum.

I get that but how can anyone guarantee him any playing time when he barely played for the last 3 years? If he is afraid of not getting game time at a club sitting in 17th place in Ligue 1 then let's be honest, he has no place at United.

You don’t know what was said. Phil Jones is an honest hardworking guy, so if he turned it down it’s for good reason. It’s not to sit on his arse “stealing a living” as some are spaffing

It's not like a loan to Everton, comutable from home easily, it's uprooting your wife and kids, for the sake of 5 months, or not seeing them, I don't blame him.

Played no worse than Maguire.

Two decent showings now. It would be mental to sell him for pennies.

His ability was never in doubt. If he could have got his fitness recored under control, he would have been our John Terry minus the being a cnut part.

Great to see him get game time .

fecked Henderson out of it in ET for booting the ball long instead of playing it out.

99% sure that Henderson called it because Jones was under pressure. Would have to watch again.

Good endeavour when he came.on, was the same as Varane, got it into his feet and looked to advance us quickly.

On talent alone, he and Varane are our best 2.

But but he should go to Bordeaux

clearly he’s good enough to get game time here for the rest of the season when fit

He is moving well, that was the big question for me, but it looks as if he still some pace and mobility to his game.

Was Jones one of the players who stood in the Anfield away end one season? If so he must know the importance of this game. Hope he can put in a good performance if selected.
