Ashley did them a favour by underinvesting hence they could get £200m this year according to Keiran Maguire who does the price of football stuff on Twitter who isn't normally far off the mark, they'll do deals with Saudi Companies no doubt but it has to be at market rate, e.g. a 10 year sponsorship deal on shirt I doubt they'll even be able to get the money, United, Liverpool, City etc are getting at the moment as the PL will see it as taking the piss, in 5 years time when they're more established they'll be able to renew and get close, but it'll be interesting to see how the PL go about this.

Ah okay thanks, hopefully their current signings flop then and they won't have much spend space left. But Bruno alone should solve a lot of their issues unfortunately.
R.e. sponsorships I doubt the PL will do anything when they sign a huge deal with say Saudi Aramco, I mean they'll know it's BS and just one of the owner's companies helping it out, but they're pretty much powerless to do anything. The only thing they can do is go to the courts and challenge it, but we've seen that City's playbook regarding legal issues e.g. with UEFA is to fight back hard with their own lawyers so I doubt the PL would be up for that costly legal fight.
They'll likely be spending a good £100m+ per year from now on, I'd give it 3 to 5 years before they become a CL challenger.
I think nearer 5 years, top 8 is pretty strong to get to the level of City, Chelsea, Liverpool and United won't be quick

That's my thought as well. We've really not had anything good in CM since the Cabaye/Tiote days. Longstaff had the briefest of purple patches but was unable to keep up that form or look like progressing. Shelvey and Hayden have been bang average for yonks. Bruno ticks all the boxes of helping cover the back four, playing the ball out well and having a great engine. Should be transformative for the side.

Yeah, its a very interesting appointment though. Brighton's recruitment and squad building has been good, better than you could have expected for a side with Brighton's limited resources.
It shows that the people running Newcastle are serious. They want a Director of Football who knows what he's doing and can help them use their humungous resources well.
Ashworth might fall flat on his face but the thinking behind appointing him is clear. You can guarantee if he isn't a success they'll just go looking for another experienced Director of Football.
As someone who isn't a Newcastle fan its a bit concerning to see them making sensible decisions. I would have much prefer them go for the big splash, big signing approach and hope it all makes sense later.

It is such a smart move for him. If he is able to bring in quality players that are not world class for the next two years, he will then be able to start recruiting anyone that he wants to.
It certainly shows they are at least trying to make the right appointments, not trying to wing it on their own. Even their winter signings shows they aren’t paying mercenaries right off the bat, something City did early on. While I can’t agree with the state sponsored clubs we have, it will make the league exciting.

Great result and performance last night. Ground was jumping. Maxi is a beast of a player and Trippier has begun to show his deft touch at last. Thinking we may just survive...... Then bring on the Summer....

Incredible recent run when you consider Trippier been out last few weeks and ASM and Calum Wilson also been injured. Chris Wood hasn't really looked that good either so perfect example of manager coming in and getting far more out of existing players than Steve Bruce did.
