How much is their FFP limit do you know? It's a certain amount you can spend over 3 years right?

As I recall it's linked to turnover, it's likely they do similar to City in the summer and sign loads of sponsorship deals with Saudi related companies.
Ashley did them a favour by underinvesting hence they could get £200m this year according to Keiran Maguire who does the price of football stuff on Twitter who isn't normally far off the mark, they'll do deals with Saudi Companies no doubt but it has to be at market rate, e.g. a 10 year sponsorship deal on shirt I doubt they'll even be able to get the money, United, Liverpool, City etc are getting at the moment as the PL will see it as taking the piss, in 5 years time when they're more established they'll be able to renew and get close, but it'll be interesting to see how the PL go about this.

What the....
That is one weird announcement video, he must have thought he was going to Arsenal and we didn't follow up. Would love it if they were to be relegated

Ah okay thanks, hopefully their current signings flop then and they won't have much spend space left. But Bruno alone should solve a lot of their issues unfortunately.

R.e. sponsorships I doubt the PL will do anything when they sign a huge deal with say Saudi Aramco, I mean they'll know it's BS and just one of the owner's companies helping it out, but they're pretty much powerless to do anything. The only thing they can do is go to the courts and challenge it, but we've seen that City's playbook regarding legal issues e.g. with UEFA is to fight back hard with their own lawyers so I doubt the PL would be up for that costly legal fight.

They'll likely be spending a good £100m+ per year from now on, I'd give it 3 to 5 years before they become a CL challenger.

I think nearer 5 years, top 8 is pretty strong to get to the level of City, Chelsea, Liverpool and United won't be quick

That's my thought as well. We've really not had anything good in CM since the Cabaye/Tiote days. Longstaff had the briefest of purple patches but was unable to keep up that form or look like progressing. Shelvey and Hayden have been bang average for yonks. Bruno ticks all the boxes of helping cover the back four, playing the ball out well and having a great engine. Should be transformative for the side.

I do not.
Well in that case you are one of the few amongst us who genuinely can be high and mighty about Saudi and their oil money. I assume you don't use Russian gas and you also boycotted the Blair government and their services after they murdered Dr David Kelly. Unfortunately the rest of us can't do all of those things, we just turn a blind eye and get on with our lives.

Just noticed they loaned out Matty Longstaff to Mansfield in League 2, bit of a comedown for him.

In the country that owns Newcastle, everything in those Greenwood clips is borderline legal and would go unpunished.

They are owned by some of the worst people on the planet.

Women have been raped by their own family Members, conceived, and been violently punished for speaking out about it.

Stop blunting the issue and making it about Fcuking oil. It’s childish. Grow up.

That's BS. Rape is illegal in Saudi Arabia. This is just another example of anti Muslim hate being given a free reign in football.

It's as ridiculous as blaming British society or the laws for Jimmy Saville.

That’s a crazy drop. I know he’s a bit shite but I would have expected a championship loan or something.

I said borderline. All of this anti Muslim shit I have must feel must have really been tough for me to swallow when I dated…..a Muslim from Pakistan for two and a half years. Jesus Christ.

Spousal abuse there is INCOMPARABLE with England. And I don’t think it’s exactly peachy and in the daylight here. It’s unreported there, because there are consequences.

The recent messaging may suggest it’s getting better. But as recently as last year there were reports that as many as 40-50% of women had been victims of sexual assault in their lifetimes.

Forgive me for not clapping that they’re white washing at the same pace they’re sports washing. Women in that country have been brutalised for decades. I don’t care that it’s been slightly better for a short while.

Anyway, that’s it. I’m done. It’s a Newcastle thread and I’m going off. Will pop you on ignore.

Cllearly moving for the weather…

Yeah, its a very interesting appointment though. Brighton's recruitment and squad building has been good, better than you could have expected for a side with Brighton's limited resources.

It shows that the people running Newcastle are serious. They want a Director of Football who knows what he's doing and can help them use their humungous resources well.

Ashworth might fall flat on his face but the thinking behind appointing him is clear. You can guarantee if he isn't a success they'll just go looking for another experienced Director of Football.

As someone who isn't a Newcastle fan its a bit concerning to see them making sensible decisions. I would have much prefer them go for the big splash, big signing approach and hope it all makes sense later.

It is such a smart move for him. If he is able to bring in quality players that are not world class for the next two years, he will then be able to start recruiting anyone that he wants to.

It certainly shows they are at least trying to make the right appointments, not trying to wing it on their own. Even their winter signings shows they aren’t paying mercenaries right off the bat, something City did early on. While I can’t agree with the state sponsored clubs we have, it will make the league exciting.

Great result and performance last night. Ground was jumping. Maxi is a beast of a player and Trippier has begun to show his deft touch at last. Thinking we may just survive...... Then bring on the Summer....

Seems like they'll have enough to stay up. I can't see any of Burnley, Watford or Norwich overtaking them.

They’ll sign enough quality in the summer for people to forget the Saudi bombs being dropped on children in Yemen.

It's deplorable but what about Chelsea and City? He may have a murky background but MBS has done nothing but good for our club and the city of Newcastle. Top man.

What do you mean by the city of Newcastle?

It looks exactly the same now as it did in November.

Have to credit Howe here.

I genuinely didn't think he had it in him to come in mid season, give the team proper defensive structure and keep them up.

Incredible recent run when you consider Trippier been out last few weeks and ASM and Calum Wilson also been injured. Chris Wood hasn't really looked that good either so perfect example of manager coming in and getting far more out of existing players than Steve Bruce did.
