I genuinely love how divisive this is. There wasn't this much opposition to Maguire
I remember it being similar, I’d even say it majority against it but we were so desperate for a CB and people got suckered in by him scoring goals against some dross for England.

I understand most on here essentially think Rice is a good player but way overpriced, there’s a small minority who think he’s world class.

He'd only scored 1 international goal against Sweden in the WC quarter final at the time of his transfer. And that was a full year before we signed him.

Maybe I’m misremembering timeline but I thought he’d done well in the Euros and then we signed him that year?

edit . Sorry WC.

Real Madrid don’t tend to spend big money on defensive midfielders, they’ve bought Casemeiro Casaminga all for reasonable fees in recent years, it’s star attacking players they spend big on if they ever do.

Also rarely do Madrid go for English players the ones they have gone for in years gone by tend to be either for modest fees or bonafide stars like Beckham with numerous world class seasons behind them something Rice doesn’t have, he hasn’t even played in the CL before as of yet.

They spent 50m on non proven international defensive player with Portuguese league experienced like Militao when they already had Varane and Ramos at that time

Imagine how much they would spend on proven international DM with PL experienced and highly rated if they don’t have Casemiro and Camavinga. They always known as a club who is not shy to spend big, that’s something you can’t ignore.

Wish Chelsea signed him now. You could have gotten him in the summer for a sofa bed and night lamp.

Nothing has changed in my mind, sign this guy and build new team around him. He is a leader at a very young age....improving every year....no brainer.

Why would Real Madrid care about PL experience, are they moving to the PL or something?
I mean the last PL experienced player they got was Hazard, didn't end good for them.

I'm not sure they would throw 100m for Rice, they would rather spend that money on attackers.

I'm not sure devastating waves and floods would help.
Apparently, many thousands years ago, a flood cleansed the world. Something like that, rather than a cultural reset infused with United DNA, might do us some good.

Having PL experienced reflects to player’s experienced in top tier league football.

Declan Rice’s first-half vs Sevilla:

100% ground duels won
100% pass accuracy
100% tackles won
2 ball recoveries
1 big chance created

I talked about this before and want to know others opinion.

Ten Hag uses the defensive version of the false 9 - a CDM that steps in to defence to create a temporary back 3.

This allows the defensive line to spread wider and further forward and give an element of freedom to pass the ball out from the back.

We saw this both with Frenkie De Jong and Alvarez.

Apart from going for his own ex players -

Who are the players that he can bring that can play as this hybrid CB/CDM player? For me, Rice plays like this for Moyes. I want to know who else is available in the the market that can play like this.

Is that true for all players? I see a lot of stats getting talked about for foreign players as a way to highlight their good game.
From my point of view, yes, it's the same for all players, especially because most stats are taken from twitter posts that are intelligently written to post a positive(only positive stats in the post) or negative(only bad stats) narrative.
It's like watching 5 minutes of Harry Maguire's great moments vs 5 minutes of his blunders, you still don't understand shit until you watch 5-6 games.

Honestly it's cringeworthy reading some of the overhyping of this guy who happens to be a decent ball holding midfielder who can do good job in a team that is happy to defend deep with numbers.. Honestly some of our fans never learn

I think I heard the same glowing terms surrounding our fanbase who got giddy about Maguire before we wasted 80 million sterling pounds on him

''Prem proven''

''Great in the air, a leader and commands respect''

''Fergie would have signed him''

''Future England Captain and ambassador''

''Van Djik cost 75million he'll thrive and rise to the occasion like him''

''City and other top teams want him so lets get him before they do''

''One of the best CB's on the league''

We need to move away from overspending on these English hype jobs who have won nothing and proven nothing at elite level. We'll buy him and he'll be a tidy player just like AWB was at first and then watch his form slowly fade into oblivion just like those hypejobs. A grealish type situation will arise and the UK media will scrutinise him until the pressure mounts and he falls apart

All this prem proven bollocks doesn't mean squat. AWB was prem proven, Maguire, hell even David Bellion was prem proven once upon a time. Look at City and Liverpool see how many of their top players transfers were english and prem proven? Rodri or Fabinho prem proven? Just because a player is English and looks decent in a mid-table side in the prem doesn't mean they will cut it in a big club where the pressure is there to deliver week in week out.

If he going to cost anywhere near the price being bandied about and the wages that would accompany such a price United should stay well clear. As mentioned elsewhere in the forum a major reset is required at United both with personnel and wages, transfers like this will prolong the depressing post Fergie saga.

Reminds me of a young Keano, and Keano himself said young Declan is far better player now than he was at 23...some praise that.

Last night he was by a country mile the best player on the pitch against Sevilla and he is still only 23.

Class act.

Good post. Nothing wrong with promoting English players but they take it to extreme levels because let's face it, England falls short when it comes to producing elite talents when compared to other high profile nations. It's more pronounced when it comes to midfield and defense. If the nation did produce more you'd see more English players starting and getting more minutes for the best English clubs but this isn't the case.

As a result decent to even slightly above average young English players are hyped to the moon even they are not worthy recipients of such lavish and premature praise. Rice is the prime example of such a young English talent and he now believes this hype. How does he consider himself world class when he hasn't even played for one of the top English clubs yet and hasnt even tested himself against the best in CL football? It was the same with Maguire, Stones and even Micheal Keane to an extent.

The goalkeeping situation is even worse. Hart was the last English keeper to start for one of the big clubs and Pep ousted him without blinking. Pickford is bang average and so is Dean Henderson. The Rice hype machine could be setting him up for the fall because he simply isn't elite level, perhaps not yet.

Remember someone saying similar thing when we bought a young Roy Keane for 3.75 million from Nottingham Forest, which back then was a lot of money.
Staying well clear of Declan Rice is a huge mistake, he is exactly what we need, not the bargain basement signing like Haidara/Kamara that people are pining for.

The valuation of 100m is probably bull. West Ham would like to sell him at that price but nobody is buying him for that amount including our incompetent board. But if he is available for 60-70m and chelsea out of the picture, then we must get him. I know Caf has developed a penchant for comparing him to Maguire just for the reason that he is English and abit overpriced so he must be shit but reality couldn’t be more different. If you can’t see the difference between Maguire and Rice then I don’t know how could anyone convince you when your brain fails you that badly.

People are willing to spunk 50m or maybe even more for tchouameni who is nowhere near Declan rice not only in footballing ability but also in maturity and leadership qualities. But if he is worth 50-60m then Rice is worth 100m just for the sake of argument.

These are the type of signings that made Klopp and Tuchel who they are. The type of signings that Rangknick brought to the Red Bull clubs to good effect and produced many gems who became world beaters. The same type of clever signings Dortmund makes. But no, we need another Maguire situation so let's throw 80 million plus on one player who hasn't achieved jack shit yet

Would be the typical United post Fergie signing, spunk an absolute feck load of your Summer budget on one player, who may or may not be overrated and is certainly vastly overpriced. With the ridiculous notion that he, like Sancho, or Maguire, or Pogba before, will suddenly transform an entire side of players that simply can't keep the ball into something great.

When will we wake up and use good scouting instead to identify the right targets, rather than spending stupid money and wages and the current UK flavour on the month? We're not a single 80m quid player away from being a top side, this time we need a smart Summer rebuild with a top manager to take some steps towards a longer term goal.
