Some superb stuff at times last night.
A Redondo esque bit of skill on the byline to get past his man with absolutely no right too.

Sometimes you realise we've misused him for long spells, and tonight was one of those.

Still doesn't really have the creativity, goal threat or flair you probably need to play further forward though, but has energy stamina and zip up there with anyone.
Agreed, he's grown on me. He's the only midfielder I'd be happy keeping at the moment.

Such a bizarre player.

One second he’ll make Berbatov look as inept on the ball as Lukaku and in the next he’ll completely zone out and pass the ball straight to an opposition player.

Miles away from being consistently good enough to start for us.

We need to spend money for a new midfielder. But not to replace Fred. We need someone to replace McT/Matic.

I am convinced, had he gone to Man City, he would be considered a great player.

Firstly, they wouldn't have wasted him in defensive midfield for 3 or more seasons. Since Solskjaer was sacked, Fred has been playing further up the pitch and has managed to go joint-second for assists for all CMs in the Premier League (5). All of them came after Solskjaer's sacking, so 28th November 2021 onwards. He must have one of the best assist to game ratios as CM in the league, possibly even the best. 5 assists in 14 games as a CM.

At the moment, he has a goal contribution (assists + goals) of 1 to 2 games as a CM. That is great.

Secondly, he suits a pressing team far more than what Manchester United are. Someone posted a table on here a few months back showing Fred as our top presser, but the gap to second was ridiculous. He was like 150 ahead over the course of the season up to that point.

I feel he is a player that is going to go down as one who was wasted.

Only CM who can still play a role here. Turns out he's another good player who has been made to look much worse in our dysfunctional team. He'd be very good at Liverpool or City. Might not be a guaranteed starter but he'll get into their squads for sure. Pep doesn't scout a player and ask for him for nothing. Absolutely shocking how we've played him as a DM all these years.

He is a player who had always suited a high press game. He grows in confidence and you start to see his ability.

After last night we need to change thread title to Fredinho.

I wouldn’t mind if he were the only current player in our regular midfield 3 next season. The rest need to move on.

He can be annoyingly inconsistent but I genuinely do think he's a good midfielder and is often unfairly lumped in with McTominay. I've probably made some less than savoury comments about his ability in the heat of the moment, but he's one of the few I'd have no qualms about keeping. Whoever our next manager is I can see Fred having a role to play.

He looks much better playing higher up the pitch. That bit of skill he did last night! Didn't think he had it in him.

Think this is the key with fred, hes a box to box player, he can harry plays and can carry the ball. Hes not a holding midfielder or an attacking midfielder. To a lesser extent I think Mct is the same a B2B. This experiment of playing them both or alone as holding mids is one of the stupidest things we've done.

It's almost like if you play players in their best position they'll look better.

Poor @GifLord, I've seen at least three or four posts requesting this gif today. You should all thank him for being so selfless and not telling you to feck off and go find it in the Post Match thread.

Quite possibly the only player I like at the club.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
In good form right now. Him and yes Matic are currently the two midfielder I would start. Matic because he is the only real DM we have, even though he isn't among the best in the league the rest in the team simply can't play that position at all.

The third central midfielder slot should go to one of Bruno, Pogba or McTom.

I just can't help but love the little fella. So endearing. Gives it absolutely everything. Especially in contrast to several of his more hyped, yet underperforming, peers. He is more deserving of being fawned over than the fair weather Cavani.

His form lately has been excellent, probably his best in a United shirt but let's not pretend he hasn't been our best midfielder for years.

Been a Fred fan for the longest time. Too many arguments to mention that he was a much better player than most gave him credit for. Said it previously, Fred is playing out of position and people are criticising him for not being able to play it. Never understood that.
What’s happen to the rhetoric that he can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t be creative……seems playing him in his right position, he can do all those things. The consistency will follow when the club is consistent in how we use him properly.

Hands up with this one. Played in the right position where he doesnt need to do some much defensive focussing, he is a different player.

He might actually be in with a strong shout for our player of the year-make of that what you will. It's starting to look like that season Luke Shaw won it all over again.

His performance shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. Anyone who's seen him play for Brazil this past year already knew his abilities when he was allowed the freedom to be higher up playing his natural position.

It is not Fred samba if after you do your samba you dont misplace a pass.
Ok. I thought Savić put his arm out as he went past which I bet an Atlético player would've gone down for, and the ball got stuck under his feet as he tried to keep it in play. There was also 6 defenders in the box vs our 2...

Another good performance, in fine form currently, although it’s not too long ago he dropped a terrible performance from memory. Inconsistent and has been a part of the reason we are as a team where we’ve been in his time here. A few fancy tricks out of nowhere every three years won’t change that. Reading posts on here sounds like we only bought Fred in the summer. He’s been here four years and hasn’t had a season beyond bang average. I can’t remember a single match winning performance or big moments from him in that time. He’s been alright. At times pretty good and quite rarely surprisingly excellent.

He’s been a better signing than Pogba

Has he really though? I know Pogba came with a huge price tag, but it's not like Fred was some bargain basement find. I'm all for Pogba leaving, but I also remember him having some excellent patches of form at the club (Ole's first few months; second half of last season - if memory serves...)

Definitely no worse. I’d say Fred has played the same amount of games or close to in 3 seasons less?

Oh he's definitely been more durable, but he has plunged to frightening depths during that time. I do hope we can see more of this recent version of Fred.
