Football’s passed him by. I loved it when we appointed him. I hated him by the time he left. None of those things can change the fact that the man knows how to win. Big or small, but he has won everywhere he’s been. Good for him and there will always be a part of me that wonders what would’ve happened if he got more backing from the club, which he 100% did not in the window before he was sacked.

He's doing well in his first season, well, he's never done that before, has he? Wait for the inevitable implosion, it's only a matter of time, whether he wins the final or not.

Some people have extremely short memories. Same old drivel being trotted out. "He's found his level, he's back, he wasn't backed at United".

I think the fans would have preferred the Coppa Italia, but yes any silverware is good silverware, and more so after a 14 years drought.
No way. They've never won a european trophy before, this is actually big for them
Found it a bit cringe that he appears to care about this shite comp. If it was with some shit under dog team fair enough, but Roma!.?
Roma care a lot about this trophy actually. Chance to win their first ever european trophy
I'm no expert on Italian football but I was surprised when I looked at Roma's trophy cabinet: only three league titles but a pretty big domestic cup team (9 Coppa Italia). Fair to say they're a 'Spurs level' club in their own league?
Domestically much bigger than Spurs, but not a wrong comp

Aye, because the mess here was all to do with his "implosion" and nowt to do with our angelic dressing room.

Our trophy count has been positively brimming since his departure too.

I wonder what all the posters who are making fun of him for being at Roma thought about Ancelotti when at Everton.

Unfortunately, at that level, a lot about getting jobs comes down to reputation, and it indeed seemed like he was done after his time at United.

Whether it was him or the players that was the problem should be obvious by now, I feel.

Yeah, Jose Mourinho was the problem and it was obvious.

Was he the only problem? No but he was the biggest problem.

So that, we choose your method of analyzing, if Pogba joins PSG and wins French league, does that mean Jose was the problem? I mean Herrera has already proved that Jose was the problem by winning French league, reaching CL finals after leaving Jose. Also players like Pogba, Matic all won league titles before joining him at ManUtd.

Lukaku, Young, Darmian, Sanchez also proved that Jose was the problem by winning Serie A after leaving him.
Blind also proved him wrong by winning Dutch league, reaching CL semi finals.

The list should be even bigger.

Mourinho achieved the best results of any United manager after SAF and, when the moment came to step up and push for big things, the board backed the toxic dressing room over him.

I have no idea how what you wrote is connected to what I am saying, but go on.

Imagine the mockery Jose would come up with if that was Wenger crying after reaching the finals of Europe's third tier competition, which he might not win.

Still 1 more trophy than utd if they win it
this trophy is no more important than the other one he made up for Mctominay

It just makes me laugh for all the big talk he gave us, how he used to call Wenger a specialist in failure. Now look at him :D

I don’t understand why UEFA create this conference league for, as they already have Europa league. I’d rather they bring back cups winner cup, at least it’s a trophy to decide winner from domestic cup winner, which makes more sense

I never understand people who turn their nose up at any trophy in football, let alone a European one. I’d be more than happy to have a Europa or Conference League final to look forward to.
I think real winners chase every success possible.

If you can't understand why Jose would feel emotional about getting Roma to a European final after the last few years he has had in management then I don't know what to say. This is like him having to prove himself again in a way.

Same way, it's easy to understand why people think Jose is a twat for acting this way, when all the years he spent mocking managers who achieved good results but which was beneath him at that time. He has become all the things young Jose mocked.

Oh no, Jose isn't emotional, he is very good actor though, so credit where it is due.

Board backed him and he was in 6th position by mid-december.

Moment to step up was in 2017-18, Jose was backed and he failed to win the league. He wasn't hired to compete for top 4. He was hired to fight for league title and CL, he failed at both. He himself said, he has the squad to compete for the title and it's his squad. When things goes to shit, it's someone else's squad and wasn't backed.

Dressing room might be toxic but the one who lead the squad was the biggest ever toxic cnut we had at the club leading the team. Players were childish, Jose was bigger child than them. Players were unprofessional? Jose was even more unprofessional than them. Whatever team was able to do when it comes to negative stuff, Jose topped those charts.

If Jose winning trophy at Roma proves how he was right, then players like Herrera, Pogba, Young, Darmian, Blind all winning trophies also proves they were right and Jose was wrong.

FFS. He can be a nasty piece of work who did a bad job at United and also a human being who gets emotional after a big moment in a football match following on from some extremely tough years as a manager.

Why do so many of you need football players and managers to be completely one dimensional caricatures?

I dunno; you may well be right, but it does feel a bit different this time.

People go on about how he’s a “pragmatic” manager, but we’ve seen hardly any of that in recent years; his problem has been an inability to make best use of the players he’s had at his disposal. His attempt to convert Lukaku into an ersatz Drogba at United was a symptom of this. Of course this leads to disappointment, at which point he throws his toys out of the pram.

He genuinely seems to have been making more of an effort to adapt to what he’s got this time round. How long it will last is certainly open to debate.

Good for him. Pleased for him. Seeing as how Carlo bounced around random clubs in a similar way to Mourinho until Real Madrid came calling, maybe something like that could happen for Mourinho too?

Maybe I'm very cynical when it comes to Jose, be might be really emotional but I don't believe that. He is a master at playing the crowd and it's in a good way.

Ancelotti’s been consistently successful at those smaller clubs though. Without ever bringing any of the baggage or toxicity that Mourinho does. I fully expect things to go south at Roma in the next year or two.

I like Jose. I also didn’t want him at United and think he did a bad job, though as with all other recent United managers there were extenuating circumstances (Ed Woodward).

The significant minority of United fans who are still in thrall to him as apparent in this very thread is all the evidence one needs to prove you right on the bolded bit.

Ancelotti never fell out with multiple big clubs from what I remember.

He was unfairly sacked at Chelsea and Real Madrid.

His Bayern stint not going well is probably his biggest 'falling out' at a top club.

Feels a bit harsh to say Jose did a 'bad job' given he won stuff. I do agree that some people have a bit of a strange love for him though.

I actually enjoyed his first 18 months a lot more than I was expecting to. Something definitely changed around Christmas in his second season though; he’d been going on about what a great club PSG was, Woodward convinced himself Jose was about to move there and gave him a contract extension and pay rise. From that point he seemed to lose interest in the job, and we started playing dreadful football. It was a dismal 0-0 at home to a very poor Southampton when I realised we weren’t going anywhere with him.

I don't think Carlo was particularly successful at either Napoli or Everton to be fair, but yeah I take your points about the baggage Mourinho brings. Inter might be the only major club he didn't leave on bad terms.

He did a bad job though.

All things considered, we didn't hire him to win the Europa League and League Cup.

And his 3rd season was a total disaster.

You can't be serious here can you? I could probably send the ball boys to PSG and they would win the french league title. That has zero relevance. None of the players that we have sold have pulled up any trees at another club. Lukaku is probably the one who has done best after leaving.

Whether a player wins a title or a trophy is almost entirely irrelevant to their talent or ability. United had probably 40-50 players that aren't half the player that Gerrard was and have 10x the trophies. Its an absolutely ridiculous metric for judging basically anything.

If you want a redemption story, Unai Emery pushed Liverpool, probably the best side in the world, to the brink of champions league semifinals exit, a year after beating Manchester United to win the Europa league, all after he was mocked out of England while managing Arsenal and he's doing it with a club even smaller than Roma.

But wait, he doesn't have glycerine on hand to incite a pity campaign.

Why is he crying?
He knows that if he wins another "European trophy" he will be able to continue to blur the lines and get another giant payoff once his Roma chapter all falls apart.

Tammy Abraham may have just made him another 20 million.

If Jose is proved right because he reached conference league finals then players also proved they are right by winning bigger trophies after leaving Jose. As simple as that.
