How does this guy's value keep increasing despite him doing nothing remarkable?

Tifo football asking if he's worth £150m?

It's absurd, he'll be approaching Neymar money in 3 weeks time
He's become a press favourite. He suits the 'England brave lion' tag that many older fans love. Strong in the tackle, throws himself around and plays with pashun and desiyah.

Playing for a London club is a big thing too.

While he obviously does have certain qualities, I keep saying this - His and West Hams playing style is perfectly suited. He will not get this at a club chasing for trophies.

WHU play a deep compact formation that look to counter. This allows him less space to cover to make tackles/interceptions, but can also be more aggressive as he's got defenders close by him. If they do manage to get passed his initial tackle they're ready backing him up. In more open formations he won't have that luxury.

It also suits his ball carrying abilty. He's good at running into open space as he's a strong boy and can shield the ball well. In teams with more possession he won't get those open spaces and will have to rely on passing.

He's a solid reliable defensive midfielder that is consistent - that alone helps his price tag. His actual ability though means he should never be more than £50-60m.

Of course to West Ham he's invaluable as they'll struggle to find a player as good that suits them, so they won't want to sell cheap.

Blessing in disguise
Good, wasting all our budget on 1 player is a ridiculous recruitment strategy harking back to Ed Woodward days when you consider the holes in our squad that need to be filled

We can’t afford to make a move for him with all our problems. We’d possibly solve central midfield but our fullback and wide forward options will still look shit, because we spent all our money on him.

Plus the beauty of football is we can probably find someone just as good or even better than him for a fraction of the price West Ham will ask for, so let West Ham put up extortionate numbers and run the risk of making Rice unhappy or running his contract to leave on a free or a low price with a year to go I say.

I absolutely love watching the guy play.

I'd never pay more than 80 for him though.

The prices we pay for Sancho is fair at approx 70 mil.

60 seems right yet unrealistic for a young english player from PL to PL.

What exactly you love when you watch him playing? Some particular skills set? What would in the nome of zeus
suggest that any club should pay 60, 70 millions to sign this player?

He’ll be at West Ham for ages. No one’s paying what they want. I really like him as a player and think he’d be great for us, but not for silly money.
His contract ends in 2024, so it will be one more year at most if West Ham want to get any money. He is also refusing to sign another contract so will definitely leave soon.

It's how he is reading the game off the ball.

People say that what he does is easy to find but I've personally not seen it being as easy as people say especially when it comes to an available transfer.

For example I've seen the CDM's that play with a defensive energy - like Laimer or Tchouameni; but I've not seen CDM's who are available that are defending without actually having to tackle the ball.

It looks like he is doing absolutely nothing in a match and it's why I understand people thinking he is overrated. He is more about moving to the attacking position that stops an attack rather than actually tackling the attacker themselves.

I think about possesion football - and how much movement and positioning is important to a Guardiola and Ten Hag team. Rice does his movement and positioning naturally and not for the attack but for the defensive aspect that can stop attacks happening against a team that is already dominant of possesion anyway.

Anyway, if Rice is good enough for Ten Hag who knows and he should only be signed if the manager sees him as part of his own tactic. But he is more like the last piece to a puzzle than the starting piece of a new building anyway - so Rice not being signed this year does make sense to me aswell.

There’s no way they [Frankfurt] are better than Sevilla or Lyon…the ref made every decision go for them, when you’ve got someone against you, you can’t do much
He said that after the game last night, there's also a video supposedly of him shouting corruption at the ref in the tunnel after the match. Don't need that here as we already have enough players not taking any responsibility and blaming others.

Overrated, salty prick. I hope we steer clear even if he came for free, let alone at the ridiculous prices thrown around here

I’m not sure that’s really the case here. Plenty of great managers and players have kicked off with referees post match.

I'm struggling to think what the referee did that was so bad last night to cause that.

Well he's rejected new contract offers from West Ham and has two years left this summer, a deal could be possible but I doubt we offer much more than ~70m. Down to West Ham if they want something for this lad. We can't waste time pursuing Rice this summer if they want 90m, 100m+. We should hold firm and not get caught out and around 70m is already top end money, 50-60m is about right.

It is very difficult to predict how long Rice will stay with West Ham, though his contract is to 2025 incl. the club's option. He'll be made club captain when Noble retires in three games time.

A change of ownership and the outright purchase of the Olympic Stadium are looking increasingly possible next summer. The whole dynamic around the club could change very quickly.

Basically, a £100m McTominay then.

Also, his comments post-game show a serious loser/entitled mentality. Seems to be hard coded into a lot of these English players that are led to believe they are better than they really are.

Hope we stay well clear of him.

You're right plenty of them have but the ref did nothing of note wrong last night. I get after the match emotions are high and he's just missed out on a final but if he's making statements like that losing a Europa League semi final what would he be like here. It could be a one time thing obviously but if it's not i wouldn't want a player who can't accept losing without crying corruption.

Slightly above average player with little room for improvement, he is slow as Maguire and would be found out so quickly in a better team with higher ambitions. You don’t pay 100M for a slow and limited player, please just learn from the Maguire-disgrace. He is good, of course he is, but he is just too limited and attached to a certain style. Low blocks, good protection, tight lines, counters, that’t not how any top team plays.

Thought it was to 2025 with the club option a while back but then recent tweets and search suggested 2024. I'm back to my original stance he'll have to run down his contract more, I don't see anything happening this summer then.

I still think he could be a solid player for us, but not with the prices being quoted by the press. We have other holes to fill

The nketiah altercation and now this has made me think he's just a bit of a cnut to be honest.

That is a very poor positional play from Rice, not something worth paying 100m for. He has better close control and is a better passer than McTominay who is faster. We need to sign a very good dcm wo paying 80m or more.

I haven´t really seen this guy play so I was intrigued to watch him in the games against Frankfurt. Prize tag over 100 million and all that. What I´ve seen from him: Good on the ball, makes clever runs with it and always tries to follow up a pass with movement off the ball to open up tiny pockets of space. Good engine as well. Seems like a decent player. Decent. But for the love of god: 100 million is absolutely ludicrous and probably on par with the Maguire fee in terms of quality related to the prize tag. Any top club should stay 100 miles away from that. The fact that numbers like these are discussed is evidence of the english player tax you seemingly have to pay in the Premier League. Incredible.

His behavior after the game was embarassing, seems like a guy believing too much his own hype and couldnt deal with Frankfurt showing West Ham that they are maybe not as good as they think they are. Salty and classless, the referee was completely fine and I hope there is some punishment for Rice, maybe that will take him back down to earth a little bit.

If anything we need a loud mouth, refs feck us up constantly and we stand there all looking civilized. Fergie and his teams didn't hold back did they?

Watched him a few times.
Struggling to see where the £100 mil valuation comes from?

I guess our fans prefer the spineless cowards we have in our team that have no problem with loosing, act like they give zero fecks, no leadership abilities, instead of a 23 year old CDM who is captaining a PL club for 2 year now and got into a heated moment with a ref.

Was this a particularly good or bad game for him? Seems like he gets around well, shields his defense really well, and immediately gives the ball to a wide player. He's a natural DM, and better than what we've been using there (Matic aside), but he doesn't look twice as good as the other people playing in his position for 50M. I'd rather 2 players for 50M than 1 Rice for 100M. He looks like he's a very pragmatic player, nothing fancy, doesn't try high risk passes, knows his role.

Always find it both amusing and irritating when people complain about sore losers and moaners.

Do they forget Ferguson's teams were full of them? Hounding referees, petulance when things don't go your way, and taking defeat as a personal insult.

When I see these attitudes I see a winner.

He is a good player. For 50-60m, he would be a good buy. Costs double that, so stay away.

He will end up like Maguire, people will question why we paid so much, when he is only worth half of that and we could get someone from abroad for far less to do a similar job.
