Really? An Interim gave up a month after he was hired because they wouldn't buy him players the next manager might not want?

If that were true not only would it be outrageous but also highly unprofessional.
It's hard to give a feck about something temporary when the people around you also don't give a feck

Should have just stuck with Carrick for all the good this chap has done.
Maybe have just hired him to do some "honest" interviews instead.
I understand it's now all hindsight. However, you're correct. We were sold by the media and some of Ragnick's countrymen he'd invented football. However, football tactics are not enough to manage a team to success.

Quotes directly from Carrick:

“It certainly hasn’t put me off, no,” said Carrick ahead of the Manchester United game. “But at the same point I’m not suddenly desperate to become a manager.

“After a lot of thought and deliberation, I have decided that now is the right time for me to leave the club. I want to place on record my thanks to all of the players and a special mention goes to the backroom staff, working long hours with such a great group of people has been a real pleasure and I have made some long-lasting friendships.

I just have one question... Why did we hire him?
Is it because:
  1. We needed someone to find the problems and fix the club from top to bottom - irrespective of on-field performance?
  2. There was nobody else available who would do the job as an interim without asking for the permanent role?
  3. Or is it yet another mindless decision by the club where we actually have not done a proper evaluation?
  4. All of the above.

Because Klopp and Tuchel cite him as an influence.

He deserves to be sacked before the final game of the season. That’s how unbelievably shit he’s been.

I’d agree with this, can’t see the consultancy job lasting too long either..

Yep there seemed a lot of us swept along, with talk of how for once we'd done a smart thing etc.
Ignoring that he hadn't managed anyone of note for a long time.

However, the key measure of success if Ten Hag doing well. If he does, this 6month pain has been worth it.

The club had already decided to hire Ten Haag or Poch had they been available after the sacking of Ole, we'd have never heard of Rangnick. The pain is not going to go away easily. The club has lost vast amounts of money not qualifying for Europe and even more in player valuations.

Tbf to Rangnick we did score 1 against City so we haven’t lost three games 4-0.

It will be interesting to see how some here view failing rival managers in the future who are getting disastrous results.

Basically as long as they say the players aren't good enough in their press conferences then they are doing good work it would seem. If someone else in the set up leaves the club at the same time, even better.

Look at Spurs pre-Conte and now, they were just as bad as us, if not worse.
Conte would have easily gotten top four with this squad.

Yeah the squad is bad, its not 4-0 to Brighton bad.

Rangnick as an interim just doesn't give a feck and wants to leave for Austria asap. The players personify this very attitude.
It's on the board. You can blame ralf, but Ed Woodward and Joel glazer refused to pull the trigger on ole when it was clear conte was available.

That said, we needed a season like this. We weren't good last year regardless of league position and a big spot light has been shone on our players.

He has been very poor. But some of the comments in this thread are clearly Solskjaer fanboys who are still upset about him being sacked and are full of resentment.

We'd be the fools here then.

We can't just have a guy with his reputation come into the club, then pretend he is suddenly rubbish and get rid. We should be looking to him to tell us what is so wrong with us, and then help fix it, which I hope what this consultancy job is all about, but you have to have your doubts about how much we'll listen.

In terms of results he has done a poor job
In terms of getting people to focus on the problems within the club, he has
done much better, I hope long term we will look back and see that as the turning point

Well, we play our final game after Ajax play their final game so ETH is available to take charge of the Palace match, I say, do it!

He’s better suited to upstairs, 12 points out of 33 is shambolic. If he wasn’t interim he would be been fired by now, we would of done better keeping Carrick and having Rangnick being upstairs.

Why are people convinced Rangnick has had any influence “upstairs”? I’m sure nobody needs his input on anything. Our supporters think our board have no clue and need some “football person” to tell them what to do. Matter of fact is, getting it right is not as simple as that.

But now with Erik ten Hag on the way, we have a proper coach who’s motivated and on the up, and I don’t think we needed Rangnick to tell us that, and I don’t even think he had any say on it. 90% of supporters wanting him is a way bigger indication of his credentials than what Ralf thinks. It goes two ways, ETH is the best available, and the board can’t risk not bringing the supporters overwhelming choice because the fans will turn faster on him than they would on their own choice. It’s sounds like a tricky situation but one candidate ticked all boxes and was hired.

I maintain that he speaks more sense on what's needed to fix our issues than anyone else post SAF and given his track record we should use his pedigree in club building going forward.

However when you think about it wouldn't the smart decision have been to hire an interim manager with more managerial quality and Rangnick in an executive capacity? Why did he have to be manager when that's not what he has been good at?
It would which makes you think the club probably weren't looking for a DOF/executive/consultant. They were actually just looking for an experienced manager to come in and steady the ship and salvage the campaign mid-season but just chose poorly.

I'm not sure why you're suggesting some of the comments criticising are clearly Ole fanboys. They are United fans and clearly hurting. It's been a masterclass in how not to run a club by the owners, managers (including Ole), decision-makers at board room level and most players.

I'll preface this by saying I don't actually think Ralf gave up in January. But for talk sake if what you say is correct, two points.

1, why should the squad give a feck if the manager doesn't? If as you say he gave up after a month. If he was that unprofessional I'd be surprised.

2, I've no idea why Ralf is complaining about not getting to sign players. Why did he as an interim manager expect that the club would spend £30-60m on players he chooses that the next manager might not want 6 months later?

The only way the second one makes sense is if he was actually serious about recommending himself as permanent manager.

Worst manager in my lifetime. Ole was miles better than this clown.

We didn't lose a PL away game all last season which is mental when you think where we are now.

He's been an utter disaster. Carrick would have got more PTS than he has and I'm 100% certain about that.

All we can go on are rumors, but it was rumored at the time that Ralf wanted to get rid of Lingard and bring in a decent CDM in January, but the oracles who run United said no to both. We can't be sure of the truth of these rumors, but if they are true surely Ralf gets some points for trying to strengthen the squad when the chance to do so was before him.

Ridding Lingard and bringing in a decent CDM may not have prevented the downward spiral of the club, no doubt, but it might have.

But from a broader perspective, it's hard to see what more any interim manager could have accomplished given what he was given after the string of capitulations that led to Ole's sacking. First, the steaming pile of shit. Then then Pogba drama. Then the Lingard drama. Then the Greenwood drama. Then the abysmal form of both Rashford and Maguire, which was well baked in before Ralf accepted the scepter. Then club management saying no to any new bodies in January (which might have been prudent, to be fair).

We could have gone in for Conte, which I supported at the time, but it remains an open question as to whether that would have been the right thing to do. As it is, we landed the EL spot we were destined for by the time we brought in Ralf, and instead of being stuck with Conte (he's got plenty of doubters) we'll soon have a manager whom many believe (I'm one of them) has the tools to bring us back to where we belong.
Being dealt a bad hand doesn't vindicate him from playing it incorrectly.
Things he could have done differently:
  • Use VDB, Amad and Bailly
  • Not pick Maguire, Rashford and McTominay for most of his tenure
  • Tell players that down tools to feck off to the reserves
  • Maybe not try to implement a new system (4-2-2-2) with very little time to train
  • Promote more youth

10 years on, definitely the 5 managers fault eh.
You do realise we haven't even had the same set of players that whole period? You betray your basic level of thinking by stating it has to be either the players or managers fault, why can't it be both?

The fact is our managerial appointments have been as bad as our players recruitment and we have hired a mix of has beens and those who were clearly never good enough.

You can defend rangnick all you want but he has done a terrible job. The fact he was plucked from Moscow and is going to manage Austria should tell you something about his standing in the game. I suspect given a group of young hungry players of average ability he could coach them to be better than the sum of their parts but he lacks the charisma, status and liveability to manage big egos

It feels strange for anyone to call him the worst manager even if it is true. I wonder if Arsenal fans have that much resentment towards Bruce Rioch?

It’s not just the results that have been the problem. It’s also the infighting, media circus, and endless excuses that have defined his tenure. There’s absolutely nothing likeable about him or the job he’s done.

They were all present under Ole, RR has just called a spade a spade. He has to take personal responsibility but he's been correct in his assessment of the squad

He's identified nothing about the quality of this squad that I couldn't have told you in November.
