He'd be the next best thing after Tchouameni to be honest, but the club has to set a new precedent for how much we're willing to pay for a player. A defensive player should never cost more than 50-60m. Maguire's fee was widely mocked for good reason and we should never have paid that for him.

For example I've seen the CDM's that play with a defensive energy - like Laimer or Tchouameni; but I've not seen CDM's who are available that are defending without actually having to tackle the ball.

It looks like he is doing absolutely nothing in a match and it's why I understand people thinking he is overrated. He is more about moving to the attacking position that stops an attack rather than actually tackling the attacker themselves.

I think about possesion football - and how much movement and positioning is important to a Guardiola and Ten Hag team. Rice does his movement and positioning naturally and not for the attack but for the defensive aspect that can stop attacks happening against a team that is already dominant of possesion anyway.
Because that’s what basically a CB usually does - defending without actually having to tackle the ball. Rice to me is always like playing a 3rd CB in midfield, but I’d prefer my midfielders to be more aggressive, add more pressure to opponents to win midfield battle, or to involve more in build up play.

I actually thought ETH possession football would either require a baller in midfield to control, or an aggressor in midfield to press and win possession. Rice is neither this or that, he is more suit to play for a team which tend to sit back, play safe and defend ie West Ham or England in Euro.

Well I agree with you.

But the reason I want Rice is because he is a hybrid CB/CDM player. Playing the CDM player almost like the defensive false 9 version.

He is a CB that protects his defenders by playing further up.

I really like watching him and when Ten Hag has used players like De Jong and Alvarez literally in the same way that Rice would be used (a third CB/CDM hybrid player) then I don't personally get the - oh he won't fit Ten Hag's tactics think quite so much.

Ps. I don't think he is worth the prices quoted. At the same time i don't belive he is useless either, or even a Cn*t like some people say. I love his leadership and able to go out against referee's or whoever for his team. Not really sure where the cn*t thing came up but it seems like some hungry dogs craving to find anything they can to try and stop the transfer happening; when they don't have an influence on this kind of stuff really at all.

Any footballer in the world would be an idiot to sign an 8 year contract.

Is that even legal, always thought max contract length is like 5 years or was that just the maximum post players sign?
Not sure. Pardew's 8 year Newcastle deal only ended 2 years ago

Only way he should sign it is with a release clause.

If he's really as ambitious as he states then he should be looking elsewhere.

Realistically though he's probably at the right club for him.

When clubs do well in the league you forget how stupidly run they are.

He will reject the contract and force a move and they won’t be getting what they are trying to push through the media.

So the 5 year just seem to be more of a convention than a hard rule, alright.
Saul signed a 9 year contract with Atletico in 2017 so it runs out in 2026. Kind of highlights the folly of such a long contract from the club's point of view too (they've been trying to ditch him for the past couple of seasons).

Would Rice accept the deal though?

It would be like 86m guarantee income over span of next 8 years. That would be enough for him to live a rich man’s life for the rest of his life. So tempting. I mean you never know, he could have turn shite or injured in few years time, and everything would be gone.

Think it's 5 as per FIFA rules but can be longer dependant on national laws.

But it could be 5, with the club having an option to extend by a further 3.

Personally I think he'd be an idiot to sign it. All he has to do is look at Harry Kane and think to himself does he want to end up stuck at West Ham like he is at Spurs or does he have higher ambitions for himself.

As embarrassing as this is to say, we gave Kepa a SEVEN year contract in addition to making him the most expensive keeper ever.

It's an £80mil contract in fairness, it's not something to be sniffed at and anything could happen to him in his next game, picture the first day of next season, if he gets the wrong kind of challenge and his leg explodes ala David Buust there would be a fairly convincing argument that he should have signed that deal if he hadn't by that point.

It isn't likely of course, but I wouldn't be so quick to call any athlete not wanting to leave a guaranteed £80mil on the table an "idiot"

£200k a week will be nothing in 8 years the way its going. He's not going to sign that. I am assuming they will sell him when he rejects it.

It's a very risk adverse move though and doesn't strike me as the type of person he is. It's essentially settling for comfort and money over a potential top level career. I guess it's alright for some if you're that way inclined.

That one was just dumb on Atletico's part. Isn't he currently in the middle of a disastrous loan to Chelsea?

Depends entirely on how it is structured and what the release clause is within it, if there is one, I can see an argument for taking it without one, but the smart move would be to sign it and then have the release clause on a sliding scale for every year they don't make the champions league that kicks in after the first full year.

8 years?!

If he's got career aspirations then hopefully he'll have heeded Kane's mistake in signing a long-term contract with a team you'll soon outgrow.

You can always learn from other clubs, and the Rice situation is one that West Ham will have to treat carefully if they want to get that fat transfer fee when he does eventually switch clubs.

United have Rashford on a 1 year +1 option but it could easily turn into a Pogba scenario. So I'm interested to see how Rice responds to that huge 8 year contract.

That's him. He was rated to become one of the best in the world but turned to shit a few seasons ago. They've been trying to offload him since. The issue is that they agreed to pay him £200k a week for 9 years. The shorter contracts gives a player some impetus to keep improving to earn a bigger contract the next time round. I think if 9 year contracts were the norm you'd see a lot more players stinking it up.

I've learned that apart from Leicester no team has won a league without breaking the bank for top quality players but I knew that already. Buying top quality players to fit a system is attainable.
We bought Sancho, Varane and Ronaldo last summer. Without the power of hindsight you'd have expected them to have a bigger impact than adding Torres, Rice and Kane this season and it didn't work at all.

I want a squad reset and get the core to a good level, before adding the cherries on top in a season or 2

I disagree with this.

Ronaldo doesn't get the best out of his team. The moment we signed Ronaldo we turned to a team that was only ever good as Ronaldo was on the day. Ronaldo is a player at his prime that has held back Benzema and Rooney so when he is 37 that doesn't go down a level, it goes up a level with more of the team having to base their attack directly through him especially when he himself is now a central striker in the middle and the furthest forward rather than the left wing playing at an angle that only ever effected the central striker in the past.

Kane as a central striker for example to my head is "not the same type of big name transfer as Ronaldo". The age. The type of football they play. The ability for Kane to get the best out of his wider team mates from his passing etc.

No problem with Ronaldo but still I disagree that Kane and Ronaldo would be same. Kane wouldn't really come here anyway, I don't see why he would leave conte next season even if the chances of winning things are exceptionally thin.

Interestingly though Kane average passing stat is 23.9 (70.6%), which is significantly lower than Ronaldo 29.3 (81.9%).
