He is a player who has worked with Ten Hag before and is available from a club who is in financial turmoil who cant hold us to a ransom. Klopp went to Bayern and got their best midfielder to finish off their midfield, if the player and circumstances are there then why not take advantage? This isnt being reported as a saga, its being reported as if its already done and in May as well. That would be outstanding work.
For me, I dont see why we should go for lesser options just because they play for lesser sides. Where is the logic in that??
It's a ridiculous consensus, ETH hasn't managed in the league let alone a single United player aside DVB, it makes sense that he goes for a player that is well versed in executing his tactical instructions and a player who he has developed and has a good interpersonal relationship with.

It is likely ETH alone that if these stories prove to be true is making this transfer a reality from a distinct distant idea.

Klopp bought Thiago after he'd already established Liverpool as competitive at the highest levels. Thaigo joined a team that had won a European Cup followed by a domestic league title. We're not at that level.

If De Jong is a real possibility, fine. I imagine, however, our signings this summer will be more Wijnaldum and Emre Can level.

I find it hard to believe that, if Barcelona needs cash and forces him, De Jong is going to end up at Man Utd.

Ralf said we are six years behind Liverpool, which is right. In Klopp's first few years they weren't buying players like Thiago, which is the level De Jong is at. They were picking up the likes of Wijnaldum. We may well end up in the Conference League, we can't be expecting to bring in big names. Regardless of how much De Jong might personally like Ten Hag.

If there's a chance, of course, United should explore it. However, we should not get distracted from identifying other players who suit the profile of a Ten Hag midfielder. The last thing we need is to spend all summer chasing someone who's never going to come, again.
The big difference is that we have bigger economic power than Liverpool had so shouldn't take as long as Liverpool if the club is up for it. We brought in big names like Zlatan and Pogba without CL. Feel we underestimate our pulling power, especially if Murtough/ETH can manage to sell this direction that it looks like we are heading in.

It wouldn't surprise me if we sign him. Erik ten Hag will be a particular pull for the player.

Doesn’t really make sense if you ask me. He’d cost a lot, doesn’t want to leave and isn’t really a DM. Obviously Ten Hag will know how to use him but if we didn’t want him before the opportunity to sign him came up, why do we want him now? We already have to spread our budget a long way as it is.

I think you now overestimate our pulling power now. FOr a long while players willing to believe Utd would bounce back, now we are clearly in a hole. Lots of options out there beyond the big two, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle etc, all with cash to spend, Arsenal on the up. Plus no Champions league and general disinterest from Glazers and their desire to maintain share price will mean much less cash to spend on fees and wages. YOu underestimate the challenge.

On what basis have you come to this sentiment ? The recommendations of Ragnick are contrary Nkunku, Valohic, Alvarez and Luis Dias. Im not totally against the idea of signing players who are somewhat less than anticipated but the glazers have seldom been shy to give the managers funds and finances and the club had a solid window under Mourinho despite having no UCL.

Only Chelsea is realistically a better option, potentially. We’ve got way more pull than the other 3.

I see posters saying he would choose City over us forgetting one very important detail. He would be facing the exact same problem at ManCity that he is currently facing at Barca - not playing in his preferred No6 position in a double pivot with the competition even stronger than what he is currently facing at Barca. He just turned 25 so he is not even close to his prime yet so a year or two out of the UCL may not be much of an issue for him. Add to the fact he is reuniting with the manager who managed to get the very best out of him.

You have to love a tweet that covers all bases:

Funnily enough this is probably the most accurate depiction of the situation. Rob Dawson said he wants UCL football if he was to leave too, and Simon Stone said nothing is advanced with anyone. There is interest from United and some others.

Report I saw was that FDJ prefers Barcelona over United.

Also any deal would take time and nothing immediate happening.

I guess Barcelona will end up deciding based upon their financial situation ultimately.

I would understand if ETH wants to start the rebuild from midfield, I think Fred is useful player who will improve under a competent manager, a midfield of FDJ and Fred with Bruno at #10 could well work and having a player who will not need a lot of time to understand and execute the new manager's ideas is always a good way to go about things. Even besides all this FDJ is 25 and going into his prime, could well be an important signing for our future, he can give us 5-7 years easily.

Why does he have to be a dm? We need a dm and a CM that is very much obvious. Those positions are both needs. If we got Frenkie and a dm that would be brilliant.

Rangnick did not recommend all of those players. He used them as examples of players who moved in January, to show that if United had wanted to do business we could have.

Also, even if he had recommended those players, we were in a different position in January than now. In January we were still in the Champions League and looked like we might qualify next year. Now..? Conference league. Some of the players you listed may still come to United despite that. Leipzig, Fiorentina, River Plate and Porto is not the level of Man Utd. Barcelona though? Lets be honest for a second. If you're at Barcelona today Man Utd is a step down. It might not be in a couple of years. However, right now..?

I am not expecting us to be picking up players from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich etc. To be frank, to improve, we don't need to. Had we signed Caicedo for £5m, when we had the chance, we'd be much better off than we are today. De Jong is exciting, of course he is. He's one of the best players in the world. However, as long as we identify players who can do what Ten Hag wants I don't really care where they come from. Even if I've never heard of them.

De Jong would be great but if its not doable lets not do this dance, again.

He’ll massively improve the midfield. We haven’t really got any ball players like him so he certainly fills that gap and can retain possession and progress play.

Would be a great signing IMO. It would take some salesmanship to get him on board with the "Project" (Hate that phrase).

We need two CM's and you don't get a much better start than this.

United wouldn't contact Barcelona if the player wasn't willing join imo. If it's true that we've contacted Barca, then I believe ten Hag has already spoke to Frenkie regarding a move to United.

Would a 25 year old about to enter his peak career (who btw hasn’t won as much you’d think he has) want to move to a club that is basically at the start of a project at this moment in time? Let’s be honest would be a very strange career move for him even with the Ten Haag links.

If we magically get FDJ, ETH will partner him with VDB again. They know each other’s game inside out

I think there's absolutely zero chance of us getting him. Even if he had to leave Barca (because he most certainly doesn't want to leave Barca) I don't think there'd be lack of interest from top teams to the extent where he would have to come here. ETH could be a factor but he'd basically be giving up on CL football for God knows how long, he wouldn't challenge for any of the big trophies for a while and he has no idea where United will be 2-3 years from now.

Also I'm not even sure he's been that amazing for Barca and for us to spunk significant portion of our budget on a single player again, one that helps but certainly does not address all the issues that we have, and one that we cannot be that certain about succeeding here, would also be quite stupid (though I do not discount the possibility of us doing stupid business again, as we've basically done only that for the last 10 years, i.e. chased big, expensive names).

Spending way above half of our transferbudget on a player who doesnt want to leave is not smart anyway when we need a rebuild. He also prefer CL, and the only scenario i could see us getting him is if other clubs dont have the funds or need to splash that amount on a CM.
I want hungry up and coming players, and i want 5 of them. Not unmotivated marquee signings for big money. This would be United of old again, and im supriced not many people in here are sceptical of this. Stick to your guns lads, and dont lose your heads whenever a big player is linked to us.

I can understand the negativity, but I don't think I overestimate our pulling power. We are still a major player. Also we have changed our leadership both on the financial and sporting side and have just hired, for the first time, a manager on the up and known for attractive football and improving his players. The market will know that.

Don't forget that a large chunk of the players that has put us this situation will not appear for us next season either by end of contract/sold/downgraded to the bench/out of the squad.

And it's not like we are targeting the very best and biggest names like Mbappé, Haaland, Pedri, Neymar, Valverde etc. By all accounts we are looking at either the ETH connection (FDJ, Timber, Antony) or up and coming players at smaller clubs (Nunez, Nkunku, Malacia, Tchouameni etc.). Tchouameni will most certainly chose a better club based on the number of suitors he has but the others? Aside from FDJ who is being pushed out of his club due to financial reasons, there's hardly any players mentioned who is out of our reach.

I'm not saying that it won't be a huge challenge, but it's clear that the club has been making lots of positive moves to prepare for next season, despite it not being evident on the pitch yet.

Spurs: Will Conte stay and will they spend money?

Arsenal: It's not like they have impressed either despite maybe ending with CL. Team got potential but the jury is still out on Arteta. Probably the team that struggled the most against us this shit season.

Newcastle: No one knows their pulling power yet.

Chelsea: Lot of negative stuff surrounding the club with ownership trouble (that looks to be resolved) and every defender from the first team to U12 is leaving on a free this summer.

Point is, it's not rosy at other clubs either and a positive or negative summer can change the situation completely. We certainly looks to have rigged us up for a solid push behind the scenes.

If it weren’t for ETH I’d be laughing at these links…..but it’s that detail I feel makes it a small chance of happening

 excellent! I'm well aboard this train now!
I'm with you on the Frenkie train. He's a excellent player for the #6/#8 role, and we all know about his ability on the ball, but he's also quick and mobile in the defensive transition, which is also very important imo.

And hopefully ETH can make that work, I believe FDJ will thrive with a midfielder next to him who can win the ball and cover ground defensively. Fred is the closest we have in that mold.
Maybe VDB can play as another #8 and Bruno is moved to one of the spots in the front 3.

The player wouldn't buy into it if the player doesn't believe ETH can make it. If this is Tchouameni then I understands he won't buy into it but this is a player that has worked with ETH before and I wouldn't be surprised if FDJ thinks that ETH can make it happen, which makes sense if FDJ rates ETH highly, after all they had great season in 18/19.

FDJ has said he does not want to leave Barcelona but neither did Messi. Barcelona are in a world of financial trouble still and FDJ is there most sellable asset, plus he is one of the big wages players they signed recently.
FDJ likes and respects Ten Hag, he is getting pushed out the door at Barca, United are keen to get him and have the finances, I think this will happen as it makes good sense for all parties involved.
Also he is a massive upgrade on our current midfield, which is not saying much and we are also losing Matic and Pogba this summer, looks like they are being replaced in the squad with FDJ and VDB. Hopefully both of them can replicate their Ajax form under ETH.
We live in hope.
