Would be an amazing signing. Still need a holding mid though

Rice - De Jong
Bruno

That is how to improve our midfield. We would need more workhorse out wide, so elanga starting would help balance that out as well

If we hire Poch, we wouldn’t be here right now. ;)

He plays CM or wingback. Can do either as he's got great stamina.
So we are again distracted by some shiny signing (if this story is even real) and AGAIN spending large on a non CDM role?

Hm...

As I say nothing good is coming from this story - whether he signs or whether he doesn't.

Probably a shit rumor but wonder how he pairs up with kante.
Kante would probably be his perfect partner. When he played his best football for Ajax he had Schone in midfield next to him, a sort of defensive box to box just like Kante. De Jong likes to initiate attacks but I think defensively he's not someone you could rely to sit on their own. That's why I don't feel like Rice would be a good idea if we were to go after De Jong. Probably the best player we could get is Tchouameni but I don't feel that's realistic. Fred or McTominay would probably partner him and I think they'd do well.

Does Kamara has the same ego as Roy Keane that he always want to receive the ball? If he's humble enough to know that FDJ should be the star who dictates the tempo then all we need is someone who is comfortable to pass the ball with one touch from deep area without giving the ball away cheaply, can still keep it simple rather than be complicated on the ball, has good positioning, and willing to stay deep to cover De Jong if De Jong decides to dribble the ball to carry the ball forward. Kamara who also used to play as CB I think suits these tasks. Kamara was never this Pirlo type of player.
I'm only going by what I've read - by all accounts he's a no.6/ sitting midfielder. De Jong is the Pirlo type of player, and was never played with that kind of midfielder because they would have hampered Pirlo's game when building play. De Jong needs to be the deepest midfielder and any partner should be willing to give him that space in front of the back four and Kamara doesn't seem to be described here as someone who would adopt a more box to box role to allow that.

Yeah if he's a DLP then you don't need a holding midfielder but more of someone in the Kante/Gattuso mould who can provide the bite and tackling.

FDJ drops the deepest to get the ball but also gets free license to dribble/carry the ball forward. So you also needs someone who’s willing to sit when FDJ decides to leave his spot. A lone 6 should never leave his spot. But a 6 in double pivot can because one of them will cover.

Would be an amazing signing, I'd rather add a top (expensive) DM to have a great midfield than sign anothet LB/RB/CB. Our entire team would improve greatly from a functional midfield.

More rumors now that he wants to go to City. Would be so boring. Understandable, but boring.

That doesn't actually refute what I said. De Jong would be best partnered with a strong defensive presence for the general balance of the midfield area, but if that player is a natural holder then it won't be a symbiotic pairing.

Folk are mistakenly thinking that De Jong's ability to dribble means he needs a no.6 in the team with him. He carries the ball into space or out of pressure to disrupt his opponent's defensive shape - once he has provoked an opposition player to leave their man to cover his advancement or has worked an angle for a pass he releases the ball and returns to providing the attack with depth. This isn't the same as getting forward in a two-way role where a player will support an attack from a more advanced position and make forward runs off the ball. When he has the ball at his feet he is in control and he identifies opportunities to progress the play by driving forward but he also almost always identifies the right time to move it on and in doing so very rarely jeopardises his own team's defensive security.

Many no.6s can be primarily described as playmakers, and some aptly fit the term 'press resistant', but De Jong seems relatively unique in the way he can and will attack space. It doesn't mean he is not a no.6, he just has another string to his bow when it comes to progressing play. Hummels essentially did the same thing from his position, where he would step out of his defensive line with the ball - he was still a centre back. De Jong is a holding midfielder and should be played with a no.8.

The only source I've seen saying that is The Sun.

If we take into account the most reputable people. Gerard Romero said there's a strong chance he joins United. Laurie Whitwell confirmed we're working on a transfer and Xavi confirmed they may need to sell players.

It would also make sense from their perspective, with Gündogan and de Bruyne being both over 30 now.
Does it though his best position is occupied by Rodri at City who himself is a brilliant player and unless he is replacing Rodri it doesn't make much sense .

If Man City secures Haaland, FDJ and Rice in one transfer window, there will be world wide meltdown.

feck me. The world must be coming to an end.

We're actually working on signing a holding midfielder. We haven't signed one since matic? Before that was Carrick ffs..

I'm just happy we finally are looking to resolving a long standing issue in this team.

Would love it to happen but I just can't see him accepting no CL if he has other offers.

Same amount of journos are saying hes open to joining Utd and Ten Hag?
The main source for this story says the deal is 95 percent done, it seems the rest are just playing catch up
Just read report he is going to City

I can't remember why I joined this war.
Gotta love how people on here argument, "City have already got player X in that position, they don't need him." Yeah, as if that ever stopped City from buying another world-class player. Get real City have 3 midfielders over 3 one of them is leaving at the end of the season, so brining in fresh blood and let them compete for starting place, plus the fact that Guardiola loves to rotate, it makes sense for them.

He'll probably be good for us if we sign but at that price it's going to be the same story as the last 6 years, sign one big money signing and 1 or 2 squad signings, and then wonder why the team isn't good when we have about 6 different gaps in the team

If we even want to challenge for top 4, we need
A DM
A technical CM
RW
Striker
And then there's other stuff like CB and Fullbacks which I think can wait

Id much rather we spent our 120m or whatever annual budget on 3-4 players for all those positions, rather than one big money and 2 meh ones. We've literally done that for every summer since Pogba arrived and it never works.

O. dembele on a free
Bissouma 35m or Kessie on a free
Tchoumeni or another DM for 50m
Brereton Diaz or another young striker for 35m

Does much more for us than Frenkie for 75m and then one other player and another amad Diallo or Ronaldo. But c'est la vie our circus will continue endlessly.

This deal is absolutely not happening, and he will very likely end up at City, and who can blame him?

They are looking for a holding midfielder themselves, with Fernandinho leaving.

Can offer Champions League football, and pretty much guaranteed trophies every season.

It's a no brainer, and it's about time, we stop living in cuckoo land.

City aren’t spending big on a CM. Which is why he won’t happen.

I assume this is the ‘report’ folk are referring to:

It’s not even Custis.
