Why did Liverpool fans boo the national anthem?

It’s because of a perceived conflict with the British state and that idea that the rest of England hates them and looks down on them. To be fair there are running jokes about scousers being criminals etc but I think the idea that England hates them is something much greater in the Scouse psyche than in reality.

If you wanna boo a song then fair enough.

Why now though? I don't remember them ever booing it before. What's changed?
England fans booed VVD and Wijnaldum in the Nations League game a few years back. Since then they’ve been booing the anthem. For all the grand political and historic narratives you hear I think its more based in basic childish football tribalism. I don’t think they used to boo it at all previously?

I’m very certain they’ve routinely done it (as have United) only it’s now starting to get traction, probably due to the ever rightward swing of the government/press

I've got no time for the royals or that awful dirge of an anthem so I'm kinda with the dippers on this one.

The whole Scouse not English thing always makes me laugh though as the feeling is very much mutual. The rest of England would happily slice that shit hole City off and let it float away into the Irish Sea.

Feck the Royals? The King/Queen is the head of the CoE and the human embodiment of the Land. The UK would disappear in a couple of weeks without the Royals. Perhaps what the Welsh and Scots want...

One can only hope so. The end of the UK and an English republic would be a lovely outcome.

The reasons I’ve seen are things like Hillsborough and Thatcher. There’s plenty of reasons to dislike the royal family, and I do, but I wouldn’t say they’d be high on my agenda.

And yet, according to the British media, this is (currently) the most loved English club.

Its to hide the fact that they aren't as socialist as they claim.

Manchester,Nottingham, Leciester town council( who they seem to think are Tories) etc has been labour controlled since universal sufferage began. Liverpool has had a Labour council for around 40 of the last 100 years.

Considering I'm not from Liverpool and don't even live in the UK any more, I'm probably not a good person to ask. If I had to guess though, I think it was supposed to symbolize how people in Liverpool feel towards the establishment. Alienated and frustrated.

I have to say I'm kind of annoyed at how this is getting so much attention when all season long Liverpool fans have had to deal with chants like "Murderers", "The sun was right", "Always the victims", "Feed the Scousers", "Sign on" as well as Hillsborough gestures as well. None of that gets any attention from the media and the "Feed the scousers" and benefits related ones are especially ridiculous when Liverpool fans have been donating to foodbanks up and down the country all season. A Burnley fan was recorded making Nazi salutes towards Tottenham fans yesterday but there's not a word on that anywhere.

Maybe I'm being naive but at a time when poverty in the UK is rising everywhere and people are struggling just to feed themselves in some areas, some of those chants don't make a lot of sense to me.

I wouldn't have booed the anthem if I was there.

Oh yeah show your solidarity but when the Scousers take over this country we'll all be speaking scouse and singing you'll never walk alone. Being a United fan will be punishable by death.
And quite rightly too. Everyone will also be required to take monthly lung function tests and £50 daily fine if you don’t comply with your inhalers. Plus the name of the purple nosed Glaswegian shall be scrubbed from all the history books. Oh, and Blackpool shall be moved to OT, shite rides and all, and renamed Disneyland.

If they boo'ed it cause of were scouse not English, did the match going fans that are not from Liverpool boo as well I wonder?
On a side note, can't understand why an anthem about saving a king/queen still be going at this stage or maybe they are all about a person rather than the people, anyways I wouldn't have boo'ed it even if I don't understand why the English have it as their anthem

I'd imagine they were booing to voice their displeasure at the ruling 'class' we have in this country being out for themselves and not really bothering with anywhere North of Watford other than to break promises to level up.

That and the whole royal family being unelected parasites thing.

Best thing the little rats have done.

And yes, United were there first. It took off in the 90s. A lot of anti-England sentiment (and chants) from local fans.

With all due respect to non-local fans, it's hard to understand how screwed over northern cities have been by the London establishment. And that disaffection comes out in different ways at different times.

As a counterpoint it's not even about patriotism. It's specifically anti-establishment and anti-royalist. Different things, and I will defend anyone's right to boo their anthem. Even the dippers.
Meh, the anthem and being English isn’t a government/royal family thing despite the lyrics. There’s more to this country than a government and some royals. Im no fan of the royal family or our government but I’d personally never boo the anthem because the country is bigger than them.

Also what’s this stuff about how nobody bothers with anywhere north of Watford. Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds are three of the wealthiest cities in the country. There are plenty cities down South that have had decades of being ignored. This whole idea that the North gets screwed is hilariously outdated and completely incorrect.

You can see poverty and places left to rot all over the UK. This anti Westminster/London government anti royal thing has been prevalent for a long time in Liverpool and Manchester and I'm sure many other places. Some broad acceptance has taken over in recent years but political/regional independence and removing the royal family were talked about a lot in the 80s and 90s. It's not a Brexit thing, more anti elite anti establishment formed over decades to centuries even.

I respect us and Liverpool for doing it to be honest; why bother with all sycophantic royalist crap? Get a better anthem about the people of the country instead of one extremely wealthy person and an imaginary being in the sky.

Also, United players endured tons of abuse in the 90s/00s from England fans, we sing the 'Argentina' chant and a song about Ronaldo making England look shite :D .
