Plus he was in Benfica's B team until he was a year or two older than what Timber is now!
I always try to be fair about him and praise him when possible, but I just cannot stand how he plays sometimes.

Anyway, if we don't sign Timber you can sure as hell bet Guardiola will pretty soon.

Yeah if we want to be more attacking, we need players who are confident to try these things and a manager who will encourage him to do so and allow him to develop - making mistakes along the way. I believe if we got him, we'd have both - player and manager.
Agreed. I know some of the fanbase would be uncomfortable seeing Timber doing that here as a lot don't value that type of play style in our third of the pitch, but I'll love it and think it'd help propel us into finally becoming a modern team.
Could he play CDM? He can sure carry the ball and accelerate past players. Good close control as well.
Apparently only ever played there once, but I can definitely see it. Said it before but his play style is very similar to de Jong's so I could see him playing a similar role in midfield if necessary.
A CB running onto a 1-2 on the byline of the opposing box and cutting it back for an assist. Yeah I don't think our Cbs are going to last long under Ten Hag
Kinda reminds me of the beginning of the 11/12 season where we just went balls to the walls attack. Jones was making runs like that and I was so excited.
Never performed like that in Portugal so I doubt it, just hasn't got it in him.

Too busy wrapping his arms behind his back like he's doing a sleight of hand trick.

Plus Timber's showcased his ball playing ability in Europe, too. It's not like he's only done it in the Netherlands.

Lindelof is a perfect example of a CB who plays the position but doesn't understand HOW to defend the position. His positional awareness is SHOCKING at this level, his lack of physicality is sad for a guy his size and his decision making on the ball is appalling at times considering he's shown the ability to be decent with the ball at his feet.

Hell with worrying so much about the full backs....we need to fix the spine of the team with 1 or 2 starting CM's and one quality CB to play alongside Varane.

Then you focus on bringing in a left footed attacking player who can play on either wing. You bring in 3-4 guys who are first XI players and then we look at the depth of the squad and how the young lads can help us.
I don't get the Lindelof hate. He's been our best CB this season (I know it's not that hard, but still) and his lack of physicality something he has definitely improved on. I don't think he even loses that many aerial battles anymore nor can I remember the last time he was bullied physically. Maguire and Varane have both made far more mistakes than him this season but it's always Lindelof getting the hate.

We’re being linked with him today. There’s another thread about it. Can’t see it happening myself but wonders never cease with this club.
Well I am just thinking today, we need CB, DM, RB, LB, and it seems this 2 players could cover those 4 positions. So why not.

Would he compliment Varane? I would assume that would be his long term partner.
Yeah, Varane can play left and timber right. Both good on the ball and like to bring it forward when possible.

Think ETH will like Varane over Maguire/Lindelof but depends on his fitness.

He is certainly a shorter centre half, but 5’10 isn’t that short a man, generally speaking. He’ll likely be in and around the same height as most of the opponents he comes up against.

Is he quite aggressive? I feel like that’s something we miss with our CBs, only Bailly really has it but he’s leaving.

Steve Bruce was only 6' and couldn't jump, but still the best header of the ball we had at United in modern times.

To say that Bailly is quite aggressive is about the same as saying the pope is quite religious

Is he a leader? Feel like Varane needs a leader alongside him, and we're lacking one who isn't a complete tit in that part of the pitch.

Are we really saying "only" 6' now?

Personally I reckon we should start scouring the basketball leagues in Lithuania. Athletic, tall lads who are all over 6'7. We'd walk the league then if we could teach them all to Kerlon it up and down the pitch.

Pretty excited about this happening if it is. Even outside his ability, I think it would be really useful to have a Ten Hag player in the squad from day one. He will know the coach and his ideas well, and presumably ETH and Timber have a good relationship and have belief in one another. Despite his young age he could end up setting an example to some of our other players

I am not saying 6' is small - but to be one of the clubs biggest aerial threats of all times, while being 6' and (as I said) not being able to jump much - shows how far you can go if you are willing to risk your nose and have a good timing. And you should have able to interpret that from what I wrote.

Yeah i agree, I think it is important too, add Donny to that list (I hope he’s not injured?) and it’s a nice start.

With a group of players leaving, and hopefully a few more signing, pretty quickly the vibe/atmosphere in the dressing could improve as well.

I would speculate that the English/Portuguese clique needs addressing to fully get the harmony back into the team.

Gullit's criticism is fair, this is not a height issue but he just is a bit mistake prone. I'd compare this to signing John Stones from Everton but cheaper. Maybe he'll get better with age. There's some fantastic positives of signing him in the sense that he brings qualities on the ball many of our players don't have.

Everything he has come out with recently has been negative.

Which order do you rate Timber, De Ligt, Botman, Martinez and Schurrs?
I think De Ligt was the best of the bunch, he was really prolific in the team that nearly reached the Champions League final. Slightly below that I would rate Timber and MArtinez. Martinez is a really solid defender aswell, I just think Timbers ballplaying ability is a little bit better. Schuurs I am not convinced about, he is been at Ajax for 4 years now and has never consistently put in a good run. Botman to me is the odd one out. I've seen much less of him. He is just not an Ajax defender. Solid, but little ballplaying ability.

[/QUOTE]
What would you expect? De Ligt went for nearly £70m, but that price was a little inflated owing to your successes (EL final and CL semi's by the time he was 19). I'd say around £40-45m seems fair?
Normally I would expect between 40-45 million euro's for Timber, but I just now realised that Overmars is no longer at Ajax. He always seemed to get the most out of outgoing transfers. Still, I would expect north of 40m

Out of the two, is Lisandro Martinez better? I get the feeling he's a bit more assured.
I rate Timber higher. Equally good defenders I would say, although Martinez might be more focussed throughout the whole game. Timber is better at the footballing part though. Both very good!

Assuming that EtH can make 4 first team additions, I hope/expect that it would be FdJ, one of Alvarez or Sangare to play next to him in a double pivot, a right winger and Timber (but would much prefer him to stay another year at Ajax!). Team could look like this
------DDg
RB-------Timber-----Varane----Shaw

------------Sangare/Alvarez----FdJ

----------------------------Bruno

Right Winger---------CR7-------Sancho

I think EtH can get a tune out of this team. He will definitely NOT play Wan Bissaka though. Think that is as far from a EtH player as can be imagined. Think he will sooner promote a youth player than play him.

Agreed. Lindelof is badly underrated.

No he's not, he's bang average

Lindelof has always been considered our number 2 CB, either number 2 to Maguire or number 2 to Varane now. Compare him with Liverpool's number 2 CB's Matip or Konate. Or City's in Stones or Laporte. He's miles off of any of those 4 let alone those clubs number 1 CB's

I'm willing to give Varane another season but give us anyone of Matip, Konate or Laporte and they'd be our best CB

He got some decent game time already this season, but can definitely pick it up more.
Schuurs is older and is the player who has lost out to Timber. Plays like De Ligt but without any of the aggression, and with 10x the mistakes. Doesn't have the brains of a defender. Very tidy on the ball though.

The player who might take Timber's place would be Rensch, but he looked really bad in that position on sunday vs Vitesse, but then the whole team came out of a full week of partying.

Otherwise it's waiting for Olivier Aertssen but he doesn't even play for the reserves yet - still with the U19s

He seems rather small for a centre half. How would that work when the prem has so much to do with aerial battles for CB's.
