I'm fairly confident he'll be our first signing. I'm not in the know or have any sort of sources, but it just has that feel to it. De Jong I'm not sure about, it has Sneijder, Sancho 2020 and Perisic vibes in that we'll allegedly be close all summer only to not sign him.

Technicality over physicality. He fits the bill...I think it’s from the “Burnley can’t hoof it into the box if they don’t have the ball to begin with” school of thought. Yes Erik....that’s the stuff.

When we signed Lukaku everyone on this site were saying we will be strong on set-pieces in both offense and defense because we had very tall players in MCT, matic, pogba, Lukaku. I dont remember having a very good season in set-pieces then
So I would not worry too much about height. Most teams play with one striker so one tall CB is enough. We suck at set-pieces anyway so would not affect much.

Haven’t seen much of him but from what everyone is saying he’s very technical and should be a welcome attribute to the team. Won’t cost a lot and has many years ahead of him. Seems a sensible choice….Timberrrrrrrr

Is he a leader? Feel like Varane needs a leader alongside him, and we're lacking one who isn't a complete tit in that part of the pitch.
What makes you think this?

Varane's 29 years old, has won 4 CL titles, 85 caps and a World Cup. He should be more than capable of being the one marshalling a defence.

Which one you prefer, signing young player that still has room to improve and develop but great potential with cheap fees? Or the holywood signings that cost double or triple fees?
There's more options than Type A or Type B. Timber isn't the only young CB in world football, there are many that are more natural at defending like Gvardiol, Ndicka or even his partner Martínez.

My main concern is we don't have any defenders that are actually good at defending. Timber adds a lot to the build-up which is needed but equally we have massive leaks defensively and he's quite mistake prone. Even the stats here show Lindelof is winning more duels than him. It's like signing a young John Stones when we need more of a player like Ruben Dias.

Bet he still wins more than Lindelof
If ETH wants him then I’m gonna trust him to at least give him a chance
Tbh the idea that aerial ability is Lindelof's achilles heel is overplayed.

Last season he won 2.40 and lost 1.25 aerial duels per 90, compared to (for example) Laporte's 2.33 and 1.15 this season. Fairly minimal difference.

The real problem with Lindelof is that he generally lacks assertiveness and decisiveness in key moments, on the ground as much as in the air. He also isn't that good on the ball, at least not to the elite level other CBs we might bring in are, so that compensation isn't there either.

If Lindelof's only problem was his aerial ability he'd be fine but it isn't. He just generally isn't all that good.

He did all those things with Ramos next to him and it was widely commented by Madrid fans that they were shite when Ramos was injured.

I bet he adapts his game when playing in England. As Lindelof has had the opportunity to do, I mean his stats there show his best in England after what, 6 seasons? Yet little man Timber is not far off his stats at 20 years old. I’m still calling Timber as the better choice

I reckon he’ll be our new RB to be honest if he is brought in. Obviously with the long term goal for him to become one of the main United CB’s

I’m not saying that’s his only fault. IF he was not passive and was more assertive I’d probably overlook it as he’s trying his best and will surely get better. It’s Lindelofs, passiveness to the point of almost cowardice. I know that’s harsh but i see him backing off and off hoping that someone else is gonna make a tackle or a block, or turning his back on shots, or easily being man handled.

as i said to the other chap, he’s posted Lindelofs BEST stats after 6 seasons and it’s not that much more than timber who is only 20, a foot smaller and yet has so many more positive attributes to his game

I'm all for getting Timber. His ability on the ball would transform our build up, and his pace would allow us to play a high line without it being the bombscare that is with the current lot.

Unfortunately, the trade-off is that he is a bit crap in the air, but I think it's well worth it. It's no longer the days of Pulis, Allardyce, Pardew, Hodgson, Dyche all having teams. Almost every side in the league tries to play a bit now, only Burnley are really playing 'hoof it up to the big lad' football, and there's every chance they're going down.

I agree but that’s his starting point. Will it be different for him after 6 seasons when he’s had to adapt? That’s the question.
But yeah I’d welcome his signing

Timber will be our new RB, not CB. He will play a role similar to what Blind has done for Ajax as a defensively sound and technical full-back. This will allow Shaw to roam from his LB position.

I remember Lukaku being a fecking liabilty at defending corners most of the time. Heights not everything.

Fitness wise I think that Timber can roam a lot more during 90 min than Shaw. Timber and Shaw are two good fullbacks and Timber gives us many options. Great signing.

So what makes the Type A any different than Gvardiol and Ndicka? Young and has talent. Except the type of A that I mentioned needs to be cheap fees. The report (true or no) says Timber could cost 35m euro. That's cheap for CB with talent and still very young in today's market. Although, his partner Martinez shouldn't be included in the conversation of Type A due to his age isn''t consider anywhere near Timber and plus Martinez wasn't anywhere near Timber level at Timer's age now. So if you think Martinez should one of the list of our signing then surely Timber who has much higher ceilling should be on the list.

The issue is that signing Stones is not Type A but more type B because he cost 50m, which 20m more expensive and that was like 6 years ago. Dias is more holywood signing given the price tag. Therefore, I asked you Type A or Type B since people been moaning about us spending money too much rather than buying cheaper and developing players and the player we are talking about here is proven to suit with the manager's system. So which ones you like Type A or Type B, each of these types have risk and reward obviously? Just saying, we have been doing Type B more before.

ETH in London at the same time as Timbers agent a coincidence? i'd like to think not.

Agreed with this. He will slot inside and play more as an inside fullback rather than somebody who keeps the width and fires in crosses IMO. Will allow our LB to be a lot more rampaging.

Height does matter, especially if you watched the 2nd leg Real Madrid vs Chelsea in Champions League quarterfinal this season, after almost all the not so tall Madrid CB got injured and Carvajal was brought in as a situational CB, Chelsea put Madrid's defense in panic every single time they hoofed the ball into the goal area.

Timber would be 21 when he joins us, presumably for a (relatively) modest fee. It doesn't make much logical sense to expect him to be the first guy on the teamsheet, starting 35+ games in the PL in his first year here.

He's a fantastic talent in my opinion, always hard to compare but reminds me a bit of Marquinhos, or maybe Philip Lahm, despite not having played RB that much recently.

The concerns about his lack of aerial prowess are very valid though. At the same time, he has so many other qualities. Lukaku, Kane, or any big striker would bully him in the air obviously. But he's the type of agile, quick and assertive defender that could kill prime Aguero, or hold his own against a #9 Messi or David Villa type of player from back in the day. Or any shorter, or agile and quick type of forward (Torres?), the type which someone like the brilliant and incredibly aerial dominant but not extremely fast or agile legend Nemanja Vidic would perhaps 'struggle' a bit against.

Great mentality and personality too from what I've seen and read from interviews. Just a nice option to have in our squad basically. More so because Ten Hag knows him and how Timber definitely added something extra special to the way Ajax played last season.

I don’t want this guy. And especially not as a CB. All these great options available and it will be criminal to get this baby. He might be good as RB or as backup CDM option but never as CB. It will be a waste of resources.

Anyone suggesting play him at RB are likely the same giving AWB pelters for his attacking play

Just because he's small the answer isn't stick him at RB

What does that have to do with anything? Timber is Maradona on the ball compared to AWB.

That he's not a RB and his lack of attacking ability will be clear to see. Obviously

Timber is a centre half, not a right back. If we wanted a right back, we should buy a right back. Yes he is short, he is a short centre half. It’s either a problem or it isn’t.

Why are you so confident that Timber is a good fullback. Looks like he’s only played there four times for Ajax in the last year. I think people are assuming that because he’s good on the ball for a centre back and because he’s quick that he will be a strong full back at premier league level which is quite the assumption.

Whatever about buying him to play centre back and living with his poor aerial ability for the trade offs he provides, if it’s a right back we want, we should buy a specialist in the position who has a proven track record at right back.
