I think he'd be excellent, but initially an unpopular signing.

If it had to be just one id go right back, but we need both. Full backs are so important nowadays, you can't afford to have ones as poor as ours
Yeah, it annoys me the elitist attitude some fans on here have to players who came from the championship. I think with some fans it wouldnt matter how well they did.

It's scary that we are still discussing this after the 2 year Sancho saga. Not all positions are going to be solved this summer and I think RW is probably the least important of the problem areas as we have some decent options that should be able to do a job there. We should be able to get a good fee in Europe for Dalot and bring in a good RB, or else go full FIFA 20 and get the RWB. But we need to solve CM, CDM, CF and CB first.
It sounds like Wan Bissaka might be the one to go.

Either sign a RW (Antony, Dembele etc) and a young CB who can cover RB for a season (Timber) - cost £70-80m

Or

Sign a proper right back (tbh I don’t really know who) and trust the options we have at RW (Sancho, Amad, Elanga) so we can invest elsewhere - cost £30-40m

Don’t know why we didn’t go in for that rb from Ajax who just joined Bayern for free. Ten Hag should of been all over that when he knew he was coming to us. Obviously without CL football though it wouldn’t of made a difference he’d still or chose them but we could of at least tried

Has to be right back. AWB isn’t good enough on the ball and Dalot is an embarrassment of a footballer.

wouldn't surprise me if Ten Haag recalls Laird and uses Mac and Laird as right back. The best right back in Holland (who just signed fir Bayern) Mazaroui started off as midfielder

Academy need to create some special program to develop top fullbacks and put the money on it. The level of fullbacks in the market is very low in the last ten years, compared to other positions, since everybody started playing with three attackers up front.

Neither before buying 2 midfielders and 1 striker.
We at-least have players in the RB position, we need to buy to atleast 2 midifielders and 1 striker to replace our outgoing players.

Once we buy them, then it is RB because RW we have Sancho and Elanga/Diallo.

Why do we need to choose between the two ? We could very easily sign two midfielders as ETH reportedly wants as well as a right back and right sided attacker as we’ll be losing at least 4 players on a free and loads of others will also leave so there’s plenty of room and also lots saved on wages.

RB has zero quality options, where as we have sancho for RW.
If you take him out of the equation from being better on the left so far and right footed with Ten Hag seemign to like inverted wingers.....are the options better. On the right wing Amad, Pellestri, ELanga, Garnacho....is that any better than Dalot, Bissaka, Williams, Laird?

By the way I am not disagreeing.

For me Bissaka (who I stil rate personally though he has regressed) has to go, DAlot for me isnt even a viable back up, some of the praise for him this season astounds me, howe we have fallen, Buttner and Darmian were better full backs than Dalot.

So we are only left with WIlliams who despite starting well here, doesnt look good enough and better on the left and Laird who has had injury niggles and has not done great on loan. But selling the two Bissaka/DAlot buys a lot ofdecent right back options and a small outlay on top some very promising ones. With Laird and WIlliams as back ups, its a virtual zero spend.

On the rihgt, forget Greenwood, forget SAncho...if he plays ont he right what about the left, failure Martial, failing Rashford, Elanga to start? Or Garnacho? Forget VDB and Fernandes on either wing too, dont understand those suggestions, we have seen Fernandes last couple of games there and simply doesnt work.

But on the right we still only have Amad, Pellestri and maybe Elanga or Garnacho.....all really unproven. All talented but if we only sign a right back, are people really confident in the first two who have done little on loan and look lightweight, Elanga to start or Garnacho to step up, far too raw currently to be a starting eleven player.

The simple truth is it isnt either or, we simply need both as well as a centre back, two central midfielders and a striker. For methat why I seriously hope we arent doing a couple of big signings as if we do and £200m is the budget (and come on, its unlikely ot be more) we wont sign enough players this summer, nowhere near enough, four incomings is simply not enough.

Can’t wait to watch the club go another full summer without bringing in a right back who can play football.

Any chance we use Timber as a RB and as cover at CB? Basically killing two birds with one stone as we allow AWB and Jones/Bailly to leave and invest the money in other positions. Or would that still leave us too thin in numbers?

If the rumours are true about us wanting Timber I could see us using Timber at RB. He’d form a back three in possession and the LB would push really high. An inverted form of Mazrouai. Then you could have Bruno starting LW but in possession he’d be a no10. Sancho could then hug the right touchline to stretch play.

In Possesion

Timber Varane Lindelof

Sancho DM Fred Shaw

VdB Bruno

Ronaldo

Obviously if we added a Antony, Nkunku or Nunez then the formation can be flexed.

The defensive side of things is similar to how Blind operated at LB for Ajax though.

As much as we’ve given up hope on Dalot; we do have three young RB’s. Dalot makes the Portuguese national team. I do see talent there but this summer is huge for him.

Laird, Williams and AWB all have promise and flaws. I love Williams attitude but he probably lacks talent. Laird needs to show he can stay fit and still needs more games. AWB sadly seems Ill-suited to a front foot side.

Like you though there isn’t a massive list of exciting full backs that are attainable. Max Aarons, Djed Spence, Mukiele, Lamptey seems like the names bandied about and each are risks.

I think that's the most likely scenario.

Which would you choose as personally can only see us signing one of these this summer?
Ideally both but in an either/or scenario I’d prioritise right back. Amad is 19 and for the investment we’ve made in him, we have to start giving him minutes to see if he’s going to be good enough. He’s too good for 23s, learned nothing from his spell at rangers so we can’t waste more of his development. If he’s not good enough, I’d sell him with a buy back option next season. Can’t risk another Martial stagnating on our hands. I’d also be happy enough to see Hannibal get game time on the right flank even if it’s probably not his long term position.

Right back is just a disaster for us. Neither Williams or Dalot is good enough and Laird has promise but makes Tuanzebe look like Bruce Willis’ character in unbreakable.

He might well be better on the left. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be better for United if he played on the right.
I'd rather play players in positions that will allow them to make the most of their talents. This team either needs to sign a top right winger, or play Amad there.

Ideally but it's not always possible and sometimes what's best for the team isn't necessarily what's best for the individual player. If we don't buy a right winger this summer then I suspect Ten Hag will try Sancho there.

Greenwood probably won't play for us again and Rashford is clearly no right winger.

Both

Can't believe people don't think the RW isnt a problem. We literally have 0 players who are good there.. and it's been the case for about 10 years now barring a short stretch with Mason.

RB are there any great options available? We'd all love the next Trent or Cancelo but you're more likely to sign Darmian etc.

It's not that it isn't a problem but we have a lot of problems and in terms of priorities, it's behind midfield, forward line, right back and maybe centre back. We've paid a lot of money on Amad, Sancho and Pellistri for this position so it might be time to fix the priorities and try Amad out at right wing. The youngsters are promising but need minutes. Amad seems to have beefed up a bit and although he got a pitiful amount of playing time for Rangers this year, his attacking contributions were decent, as they have been for us at any level he's played. Rome wasn't built in a day and if it's not working out, we can dip into the market in January.

I think Sancho probably is our best right sided player currently, but it is far from ideal. It's just a case of 'making do' in my opinion. I agree that ten Hag will probably play Sancho there at some stage. It's just another position that is a priority among other priorities.

It is a priority but last summer when we had Greenwood we signed Sancho to solve that problem area it was a priority then too. Ten Hag rightly will prioritise CB, RB, CM and probably a striker so I don't see it as a huge problem to play Sancho there for a year and hope Rashford regains some form on the left.

Our wide options looked quality going into the start of the season. Crazy how things have changed. Putting faith in Rashford is dangerous, but you can't solve everything in one go. If Rashford can't regain his form, perhaps Bruno or Hannibal will be given games there. I'd loan Elanga out.

Yeah they did but as you say things can change quickly in football. Let's hope they change for the better quickly as well.

If Rashford regained a shred of confidence and form, it would solve a lot of problems for us. Hopefully, after a summer of rest, he gets back to his old self. Ole has a lot to answer for flogging so many of these players and it's not surprising really that the ever-presents under him like Bruno, Maguire, Shaw and Rashford are all falling apart or playing badly.

Cant see us sign a RW. Sancho, Rash, Elanga, Amad, Pellistri, Martial (?) - hopefully we can get two wide forwards from there.

RB - I would personally prioritise a CB, Striker and MF before the RB. Not that it’s not important but the other positions seem more critical

It's gotta be a right back, although that's probably the more difficult position to recruit for. Are there even any quality options?

I think Van Gaal bought and got rid of a lot of players ( some good ones) on his first season at Manutd even though not very successful. Probably Ten Hag has to do the same..Hopefully he gets it right..The players to get rid of this time are a lot easier. ( Mata, Matic,Pogba, cavani..Lingaard...Wan Bissaka..Jones..Bailly...Henderson..etc..)..it is more the recruitment that matters.

Yeah we really need Rashford to turn up next season. And yeah maybe Solskjaer is partly to blame he didn't rotate certain players a lot and as you say a core group of players played a lot of games without much of a break. If you go back to the end of 19/20 after lockdown then very little summer break, then straight into last season 20/21, then the Euros. We have quite a few players who are in need of a good rest.
