If in five or six years we're still in the same mess on and off the pitch, we could look back on this as the moment we had someone in the club who saw the problems for what they were and had a clear grasp of what needed to be fixed but didn't follow through on it.

And because Rangnick was so public with his description of our problems, everyone will see it as a turning point missed. True or not, it will be seen as a chance to reset what was happening at club that was passed up. I can imagine the long-form articles from here....

Christ I hope we know what we're doing.
No one will see it as anything missed. He has zero clout or authority in the game so no one needs to be listening to him. Our problems are very public and he had added no additional insight

Why would they go to the extent of publically announcing his role 6 months ago if they didn't want him as a consultant?
Because it was a part of the negotiation to get him as interim manager.

He was excellent at building up RB Liepzig. A club without the media presence of United. He could react like this and noone would care how direct and wooden his approach was. This is United. You can't fail like this at a big club and expect people to clap for you
Well he did great work in Hoffenheim as well.
Thing is if you should never judge his club building skills on his coaching skills.
That would be like judging a striker on his goalkeeping skills. Vastly different jobs.

And I worry abit for Ten Hag now. He had Van Der Sar and Overmars in Ajax. Here he has Murtough and Fletcher which so far have shown nothing to suggest they have any clue.

Its good that they didnt get Conte. It would have ended the same way and we would have gone back to square one.

The club wanted an interim as a placeholder until ETH was ready at the end of the season.
No way in heck Conte wanted the job just to placehold for someone else.
My guess is that even Ralf didn't want just 6 months (especially since he had to leave his old job) so they tacked on the 2 years consultancy role as a sweetner.
Guessing ETH and the powers that be at club weren't too keen after the way the 6 months had gone.
The truth is anyone's guess but this is my theory.
Nailed it!

I liked him when he first came to OT, but he's been the architect of his own demise. If he had just focused on the structural changes that need to be done, more people would have had a better opinion of him. I remember that during his first interviews he was saying things that actually make a lot of sense: That we should not rely on just one person (the manager) to solve everything, but we must surround him with knowledgable professionals and proper task delegation, so that the manager will be able to focus solely on first-team tactics. That there's a dire need to modernize the club in almost every aspect. That responsibilities like long-term vision and an overarching ethos are on the club, and that we should not expect the manager to provide these things for us.

We didn't do a dirty on him. He wanted the consultancy job more than anything. The club, after Carrick announced his departure, needed an interim manager for 6 months, probably because they didn't want Conte and they were already warming to the idea of "Poch or someone else" in the summer. I think that the club were willing to take a calculated risk when they didn't go for Conte. From that point onward, neither the club nor Rangnick expected things to go so bad for us. It was then that he entered a self-preservation mode. Don't forget that in his first presser, he described the squad as lacking in certain areas, but definitely better than the one Klopp inherited at Liverpool. From that, he ended up saying that we need a new starting-xi. I'm not saying that he's lying, the truth is always somewhere in the middle. But he also knew that the atrocious performances would tarnish any credentials he had. Unfortunately, that's how it goes.

I still remember that they were people advocating, during the couple of times Solskjaer flirted with a sacking, that we should actually promote him to a DoF role because he knows the club or whatever. I kept saying back then that it's not possible, simply because you can't have the new man taking orders and answering to his predecessor who had previously failed at the same job. It's ridiculous, and i'm afraid the same thing goes for Rangnick. Any United fan out there can say in public that we need to burn the house down and start all over again, and they can do it for free. That's not what a consultancy is about. And Rangnick went too far to protect his own reputation. ETH may find himself agreeing with some of Rangnick's assessments, we don't know how things will pan out. But he won't start his tenure with rumours that he's heeding the advice of the person that failed to implement anything, but threw everyone under the bus instead. It just wasn't possible.
Fair assessment, agreed on all points.

Because that was his condition? Talking from his pov
From his earliest press conferences he couldn't even explain what that role was, repeating that he was there to concentrate on results. It was a back up if he had nothing better to do.

Interesting how so much is being said about Rangnick but nothing of the man who hired him. Not a good start for Murtough.
That's a very fair point. He already had his work cut out for him just by association to the previous regime so this summer he has to be getting things right.

If it did come ETH, why not use Ralf's Austria appointment as the get out for both sides? As it is the club and whole Rangnick period looks even more of a shambles.

It was never the 'main point' of his appointment. Why do people keep saying this?
For some reason people believe Rangnick was tasked with "rebuild the squad" role, he was consultant, his role was to work with Murtough on need basis.

I feel we've done a dirty on him, obviously someone up top didn't like how vocal he was about the problems at the club. This scrapping decision makes us look worse.
He was a good man who had no power at the club and who clearly wasn't a coach. Consultancy/structual advisor would have been perfect for him.

This club is working day by day with no future vision it's obvious to see, last week it was 6 days a month, now nothing. I hope this BS ends soon.
How was he done dirty?

He failed in the biggest way. Made all of our players look terrible then consistently came out to trash the club.

Everything he said could have been said to Murtough privately.

Here's a question, can you imagine any Real Madrid manager ever coming out to say these things week in and week out.

I actually feel, despite what the press likes to say, we give our managers far too much leeway for the size of club that we are.

He was worse than Ole THIS season. Under Ole, we had a decent start to the campaign. We seemed to do pretty well in attack at home. Our problem was that defensively, we came in much worse shape than we were last season. We hit a slump where, despite attacking, we lost games to teams we shouldn't have. However, we were still capable of playing decent football. We then had a patch of games against top 4 teams. This is where we completely fell apart and the defence ( defensive system) that we had been using was completely exposed. So of course, confidence fell apart and despite our players showing grit to beat Spurs, we weren't in good form. Even when Ole left, we still had enough about us to beat Chelsea and Arsenal. Rangnick came and had the easiest fixture list imaginable. In that run, we only played well for 45 minutes. Every other game we played felt disjointed in attack. For a short period, we seemed to have better control ( despite looking so much worse) of games, then everything defensively fell apart completely. This time, miles worse because we didn't have the attacking system to fall back on. Every single outfield player outside a few GOAT games by Ronaldo looked bad.

Good man Ralf, he saw the degenerate state club is in and wanted nothing to do with it, can't blame him. Good luck.

The idea that he has zero clout in football is nonsense. He had long established his reputation as a DOF before he ever set foot into United as interim manager.

But regardless of whether he offered any actual insight beyond what already existed at the club, the fact that he very publicly highlighted our flaws before having his role cut short will certainly be something highlighted if in five years time we're seeing more stories akin to the one written in The Times this week.

Well that was a disaster of an appointment. Never looked like getting top four did absolutely nothing to change how the team played and destroyed any sort of unity we may have had.

Still he has his supporters for blaming it all on everyone else and not him

The last 6 months was a total disaster so why would we want to keep the cause of that disaster on the payroll?
Not all of that is on Ralf though, some definitely, but most of it is on the players.

Why hire him in the first place if you’re not going to keep him for what he actually specialises at now? It wasn’t so much the player and scouting side of him I was looking forward to it was the restructuring of staff roles and getting ‘football people’ back at the club.

The club has fallen so far behind the top clubs in terms of organisation and I think Ralf’s advice and experience would’ve helped us catch up.

Because it made people feel good as they thought something was really changing at the club and that we were bringing in an outside expert in team building.

It was better than thinking we made a short-term appointment of a coach who was never suited for such a role.

How much of a small man is Ten Haag that he has to sack the previous manager to make it clear he is the big boss in town. This point is just ridiculous
Because personnel that outspoken always cause issues at clubs when their not managers.

LVG at Ajax for example. You can't have a figure that has clear issues with so many of the players still working at the club.

Imagine someone like Rangnick making it look like he did better if ETH has a bad spell of form. I honestly don't see the benefit of having him at the club at the moment, especially as he does seem like a toxic figure. Are we going to act like he didn't leak certain things to the press himself.

I mean with what they’ve said today.

They’ve specifically mentioned it
They have, but we're all still surprised today at the announcement and how the club has handled.

Tbh I'd have thought Ralf would be keen to get the hell out of there and the club equally keen to get rid, so no tears being shed either side.

I don't see the issue. Ralf wanted assurance of a job beyond 6 months. The consultancy thing was thrown in to persuade him to give his old job. Now that he has the Austria gig and we have ETH. No problems mutually ending this.

Cant imagine this being Ten Hags decision, why wouldn’t he want an experienced help with a lot of contacts around Europe. With the task ahead we could be short of experienced decision makers and negotiators.

I don't think he will. I believe he's watched our games and has a formed a pretty good idea in which positions we need to reinforce and which players from the current squad will be able to pull their weight in order for his style of football to work. We don't know, of course, whether the new signings will bed in right away or how well our current crop will respond to his instructions. It might take a season to sort things out, but it will not be assessing so much, as it will be reevaluating what he thinks about the team, both ability & character wise. That's probably why he mentioned that he will be the one who will be drawing the line. Let's hope that they will let him.
I like the optimism from your post, but also from many United fans, who see things coming back on the right track, almost straight away.

While current dressing room proved to be an inside anarchy, even when club is generous to them in terms of wages & contracts, ETH seem to be walking this job in full confidence he'll make needed impact. Think how they respond to his instructions will also be dependent on their football intelligence and ability to adapt to modern standards and this could easily have random effects and in the end - consequences on the pitch.

Definitely club needs to give Erik some power to draw the line, but also players simply need to let manager lead them, long term and be patient along the way, which will be bumpy ride, not to mention huge amount of patience will be required to achieve desired football.

Lots of obstacles ahead in first season, but while club still have to prepare during summer, there's still some time to change something substantially, or at least mentally, in minds of players.

That being said, clearout is the elephant in the room.

You thought that was Ralf's job?
Wasn't it? He was appointed as interim manager until we get our man. Then he was supposed to take the director of football role.

It's a shame he is gone. We needed a no-non sense type of guy, who was not afraid to speak the truths we need to hear.

Feels the owners have sided with the players agents.

No, he wasn't. John Murtough was our DOF and was always going to stay our DOF. All Rangnick was ever going to be after his interim stint was a consultant.

Wasn't his job supposed to be only a few days a month? Also on top of that he took the Austria job. Doesn't sound like we have lost much here.

It may be even a sensible decision if ETH wants a clean slate, he can get that with moves like this. But I hope he doesn't fall under player spells/bullshit and still works to remove those that deserve it.

I would be happy to see a proper football director come in full time i.e. Paul Mitchell.
