Why would he worry about playing time then?
Because players sometimes need time and this year unlike others international players will have little time to settle before WC squads are named.

Vidic and Evra took time to adapt. But it didn't prevent them to be played regularly. It happens a lot for players in new League (and Team). I think that's what Timber wants but ETH won't give him that. So, no Timber comes (this Summer).

Given circumstances, I'd do that too if I were him. He might see what happen to VDB.

Because he is
A) focusing on the first few months of the season not the next couple of years
B) he is currently starting every game and is absolutely integral whereas with us he wouldn't immediately be, while still playing plenty for him to develop

You're correlating his development (which will happen with us) with his starts in the first few months of the season (which can always go either way but is a sure thing at Ajax).

Don't think he is a priority signing at all.

Sort out the midfield. Then probably the right back spot.

Tall order for a 20 year old to start for us every week too. Not been done in a while.

If he’s the man we want and he wants to wait until after the World Cup why don’t we sign him on a pre contract? Get him signed up to join us in january
If you were Ajax new manager, would you go into this season starting a player that you knew was off in January? He’d have to be MASSIVELY better than all of his competitors for a spot to get in ahead of them if I were the new manager in that situation.

you could be onto something there
Makes sense right? it'll just be like 4 months later than the summer window.

He can stay at Ajax, play until the world cup is finished then start a new. We will probably agree that in the background.

No chance he joins in January. Never mind the fact that Ajax may be in the knockout rounds of the champions league by then and, like with the world cup, he will want to play them games, Ajax won't sell a key player in the middle of the season.

Not to mention Ajax will likely be in a title race, it's just wishful thinking on the part of those thinking we'll sign him in January.

Van Gaal did us dirty
I imagine Ten Hag must have had a gentleman's agreement with Jurrien, but LVG(probably still sore from how he was treated here) tried to play a bit of passive aggressive with Timber.

I'm going to go on a limb here and say that we probably won't be buying him anytime soon for 2 reasons:

1. Ten Hag strikes me like an old school no nonsense manager kind of like Fergie. If you promise him something and don't show up you are out the door.

2. Looking at the trajectories of all of the players ETH has coached, every single one of them went down a level at best. De Ligt, De Jong, Zyiech, DVB, etc etc. I imagine now that he has left Ajax, the same will be true for Timber.

So probably Timber isn't going to join us period.

It's different now, he would be going with the manager that got more out of all those players. And if he stays at Ajax he's going to be playing in a team that's been gutted, for a new manager that doesn't really have much of a track record... wining the Belgian league is only mildly impressive.

Exactly. I know he wouldn't be a guaranteed starter, but I highly doubt that ETH would want to bring him here only to do a Donny on him. It's clear as day he has 2-3 players he fully trusts in that Ajax side, and Timber is one of them.

Van Gaal did us dirty
Van Gaal also did Timber dirty if this whole thing truly connected. I meant with Netherland CB option, even if he's selected, he's likely just stay on the bench for the whole tournament. His specialist ability is not really needed. Being in the World Cup is great, this kind of reward is too low for the little risk involved. We may not guarantee gametime, but he more than likely play a lot for us. Ajax may have a rebuild on their own hand and Timber in the team may be changed which creates some uncertainty in itself.

Why would Ajax let one of their best defenders go in the middle of the season when they’re competing for trophies?
they’re potentially letting him go in the summer, if they get to keep him longer that’s ok for them.

Maybe we sign him and loan him back?

I'd put the blame on this deal squarely on old LVG using scare tactics on a young lad desperate to play at the world cup. Maybe Ten Hag and the club were a bit too relaxed and thought this one was going to be a total breeze to get over the line and took it for granted.

I'm quite confident the 3 starting cb's in the world cup will be Van Dijk, De Vrij and Timber actually.

As if that would be the main reason.

Maybe you know more about the Netherland NT. What I saw in the recent Nations League games is that LGV gave chances to Timber, and Ake whom didn't get many chances previously. However, they didn't exactly stand out. Blind in weird pseudo LWB, left midfielder position give some balance to an one man FdJ midfield, but I don't see it would be a good solution. So lacking in attack with already thin forward line both in quality and number. The LWB should be another attacking outlet than midfield balancer.

I would think Blind would be moved back into LCB in the back 3 to partner with VVD, de Vrij.

Or Van Gaal was thinking purely from the perspective of an international manager and when asked by a squad player told them “well you need to be a regular at club level to make the 23”. Like any sensible international manager.

I can’t stand Van Gaal from his awful time here, but these conspiracy theories are utter nonsense.

I'm not saying LVG did anything vindictive from his point of view at all, it's just possibly buggered us a bit. I doubt he had us in his mind.
This I entire agree with, it’s those cooking up the “he deliberately screwed us over from resentment!” crowd. It just doesn’t make any sense compared to looking out for himself.

Blind will play that left wingback role almost certainly even if he's far too slow for it in my opinion. He is not really used as a CB anymore which is good, since he is terrible at defending.

@ti vu you are right though I just can't imagine Ake starting and Van Gaal seems to have a soft spot for Timber (even if he openly criticized him after the Poland game). Another option he's tried is De Ligt as LCB, but that's not been very successful. On paper Van Dijk, De Ligt and De Vrij.

Thinking about this, I actually have no idea who will start and only Van Dijk is guaranteed to :wenger:

If Timber isn’t going to join us then move on to Gvardiol who I think is already better than Timber and has a higher potential ceiling as well, Gvardiol alongside Varane is a much better fit than Timber too.

Surely Timber should trust his ability and believe he can make it into the United first team.

The mentality to play it safe at Ajax rather than make a big move is not really a player we’d want. Especially when he is putting his international career above his club in some regards.

Maybe ETH has told him that he would be fighting it out to get into the team, but even then to think you can/should walk into Man Utd and be an automatic starter without competition is not great.

Let’s see what comes of it, but I’d hope he would take this chance, as it’s not guaranteed we would, or even another big club, will be in for him next summer. Form and injuries will play a big part.

I really think LVG has got to him here and basically threaten his place in the team and WC squad. LVG has had it in for us since he was sacked, his comment about how we are a commercial club (true btw) proves that.

I think we will see Timber next summer. But by that stage, we may already have Torres or someone else.

Incredibly disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. Whether LVG spoke to him or not is irrelevant. We have given more than enough reason for players who care about their careers to not want to come here. People on this forum and beyond greatly overestimate our pull. Everyone who has come here for the past 10 years has been worse for wear, so he is entirely in his right to be careful.

I’m glad this one has fallen through. We can always try next year and I really think we need someone ready to walk straight into the first team like a Pau
