Yeh exactly. Bit weird. Suppose Shaw seems to still split opinion, so those that think he's still got it in him to be a top level LB would probably find it odd. I'd sooner see him sold though personally.
The problem is you can't trust him to be consistent. He's proved he's got it within him to play at a very high level, but it's worth getting him some proper competition. It worked with Telles at first, but then Telles just wasn't an able enough deputy.

Shaw's been at the club for like a decade and has had one decent season. Its about time we accept this is his level.

I too would have preferred a RB instead of a LB but both need to be replaced asap and if the right LB is available might as well go for him

I think Shaw still has it in him, but only when his place is seriously under pressure.

His 3 best spells came when he had to displace Ashley Young, when Brandon Williams emerged and when Alex Telles was just signed.

When he's playing 2 games a week for a prolonged period of time, he struggles. When it becomes clear that his competition isn't much of a threat to his starting spot, he struggles. He's just a player that needs to be kept fresh and challenged, or he drops off massively.

Leaks from when Ten Hag joined said he was happy with Dalot, not a peep about Shaw though.
Long term we need both, if this player is the player he wants for United when we are a finished product then get him now no matter how slightly less shit we are at LB at the minute
Yeah agree with that, Telles could be sold to off set the outlay.

Surprised at how many people I've seen over various threads questioning the need for a left back. Shaw is unreliable (fitness or otherwise) and Telles is the worst fullback at the club.

Right Back still needs addressing, but in my opinion the options there are more workable than at left back. Not to mention we have a promising RB returning from loan.
I don't agree. Shaw is the only full back we have who has ever been up to the standard required. Yes he has also been unreliable but neither Telles, Dalot or AVB have ever been any good, at least Shaw has proven himself to be capable albeit not consistently over three or four seasons.

No problem with this guy being bought but if it is at the expense of a right back I think it would be a mistake as I would much prefer Shaw at left back than Dalot at right back.

We all love United
Telles had a similar reputation at Porto before he came here and we saw almost none of it, and Telles is supposed to be an established player and international

We would ideally need to sell both Telles and Williams if there was anything in this. He looks the business from the little i've seen. But with Shaw and hopefully Fernandez breaking through maybe as well, can't see it happening.

Yeah in an ideal world we could upgrade LB & RB, however feels like there is more noise about LB right now.

Agreed. Shaw has problems with fitness and consistency but when he's in form there are few better. Also LB is a position where we supposedly have a quality youth player coming through the ranks (the Spanish lad). The top level of Dalot or AWB is still hopeless. RB has to be a priority.

I have a bad feeling we’re going to get a gazumping but feck it he looks good.

I hope we’re calling him Raumy just as Solskjaer would have wanted us to call him.

I'd wait for others to corroborate the news, mate.
Plettenberg's reliable, but keep in mind that he's just reporting the early stages here. This doesn't necessarily mean that we'll push for his signature. Expect this to be similar to both the Timber and Vitinha situations.
Cheers guys, so essentially it's unlikely to materialise into anything.

Yeah surely the club can see RB is a bigger issue

"When he's in form" or "on his day", is basically saying if he decides to show up.

Every team needs players who can be depended upon to perfprm to a certain level every week. Shaw isn't and never has been one of them. He's had 1 decent season and a couple of half decent purple patches in 8.

In fairness all of the full backs are shite and need to be replaced.

At left back; 8 years of Shaw doing feck all aside from about 1 and half decent seasons.

Telles is just painful to watch, but so are Dalot and AWB.
Shaw is very underrated on here. Has basically been our only way to progress the ball out of defence for the last few years. He's strong as a bull, is a brilliant athlete, press resistant and has impeccable technique. He definitely has concentration lapses and should probably have more goals and assists given his excellent technique and his bullet of a shot.

Telles' attacking contributions were seriously skewed by set pieces though. Remember in the full back threads back in the day, long before we even signed him people in the know would point that out to the lads foaming at the mouth for his goals and assists.

It's a weird summer because it genuinely feels like the quality isn't there in many of the positions we're looking at particularly at right back, dm and cf.

At right back (and not rwb), I can't really think of any satisfying transfers that could realistically happen. Malo Gusto maybe but even with him I think he's too young and hasn't been linked with us.

Stats are incredible, and if he and Shaw both look great then we can play Shaw at LCB in a back 3 next year. Something like Lisandro/Torres, Maguire/Varane and Timber/Lindelof/Dalot at the 3 defensive positions, with Raum as a wingback, Antony as winger dropping deep and wide on the right providing width.

He's not under rated, he's had 1 season where he was consistently good and followed it up with his worst season in the shirt to date. He's just another shows up when he feels like it player, who may or may not use his ability to the benefit of the team. He's also not a great athlete, he's always picking up knocks and he's clearly carrying extra weight.

As for the bolded part that's just dressing it up. He has too many brain farts in defence and doesn't do enough in attack.

I think Shaw is a good player, but the full backs in the modern game are where a substantial portion of your goalscoring chances are created. Shaw is statistically nothing special in that sense. If we're looking at left footed centre backs who can carry the ball and they arent forced to be huge, like Lisandro Martinez, then we should probably just move Shaw to centre half. He's got the physique of a rugby back nowadays anyway.

Theres no reason you couldnt play Shaw as one of 2 centre backs. He's the same height as Daley Blind and he's a lot quicker.

Yeah, we do need a good creative right back but there dont seem to be many who look to be an upgrade who arent already tied to big clubs. I'd peraonally like to see Garner given a run there. In midfield he'd be competing for a place with De Jong anyway.

He's not as smart and hasn't played in a 2 like Blind has, but yeah I agree. Though Blind did so with 2 other CBs really this past season, and we don't have anyone to play the Timber role unless we somehow sign him or another player (like if Kounde to Chelsea falls apart?) or I guess Lindelof comes to life?

Ooh, don't know about that. Not sure Garner has the pace you'd want in your right back. Always reminded me of Carrick at youth level but haven't really seen much of him at Forest. Would have thought he'd be more suited to being De Jong's partner in the pivot given his profile.

If we could transplant Daley's brain to Shaw's physique that would be some player, so long as he keeps away from the burgervan.

Shaw is deceptively tall at 1.85m, he just has short legs.

I believe Blind is 50mm shorter.

Shaw has certainly played quite well as LCB in a back 3 on the rare occasions the system has been implemented.
