Feel genuinely sorry for this lad, the club has really let him down since he signed for us. There's no doubt he has talent and I hope he gets a chance to show if he's good enough next season.
WTF? he went on loan and didn't show anything. How have we let him down. He also barely even played at Atalanta so is the definition of unproven. He has to prove he is worthy of being here. If you can't hack the Scottish league then I dont know what to say. Defoe hit 13 goals in 20 Scottish games just 2 years ago and hes old as feck

So much nonsense talked online about young players. All players develop at different rates. It’s so daft to compare anyone to previous players. People are inherently unique. What’s isn’t in question is that hard work will always yield results. Amad has a lot of talent, whether he’s good enough, none of us know. But if he works really hard then he’s going to give himself the best chance possible of making it. He’s been hugely rated at youth level, but like every young player, making that leap is a huge step. You just never really know.

I think he falls into that category of unknown in our squad. He seems as likely to end up being great, as he does an almost forgotten byword. I can’t read it at all. I’ll be really interested to see how preseason goes for him, and if he stays, what ETH can get out of him and turn him into. There’s a reason we paid 19m for him. There is something there. If it’s enough, no one on here knows. And anyone claiming to, is just talking shit, like they always do.

In a perfect world we’d stop hyping young players up to the high heavens based on youth performances or a game or two, and we’d stop writing them off when they hit a sticky patch. It’s a never ending cycle and alway shows up the posters who really have no clue about either football or human psychology. It’s just knee jerkism.

My favourite example is Darren Fletcher. A player who was always good nearly from the moment he broke through. Initially hopes were huge, blend of Beckham and Scholes some people said. Then he didn’t do anything show stopping, and he became a target of people’s vilification. And then slowly but surely he became a central member of the team, to the point where people blamed our first CL final loss to Barca on Fletcher being suspended. He was that vital.

But the reality was that he had a fairly steady development curve, improving incrementally year on year. His highs were never as high as people hyped, and his lows never ever close to the abuse people sent his way. He broke on to the scene and was a good player, and he gradually became a very good player.

It’s pretty sickening the way most of our young players get talked about on here. The next to suffer it will be Hannibal. You can already see him being hyped up last season as better than a full Brazil international, despite playing a handful of minutes. As being framed as the answer to all midfield problems. And when he starts getting regular games, how do you think people will react when it turns out he isn’t the reincarnation of Xavi, and that he probably needs a season or two or three of regular first team football before he really starts to look the part?

I lived in Spain when Xavi broke through, and I remember Van Gaal having to defend him by saying he was the future of the club, because Barca fans were on his back so quickly, saying he was slow and shit. I guess it’s just human nature. We want it all now, no one wants to wait. Every player has to be ready to go at a high level at 17 a la Fabregas or Messi.
Fans don't appreciate any young player unless they immediately look special, which is so incredibly rare at this level.

One thing I've been impressed with from Amad is his temperament.

In his first 6 months he played in the reserves and it was clear to see he was levels above the players there, and when he got his chance in the first team, he held his own and gave the team a new dynamic with a highly technical right winger.

Last season was a difficult one for him but still not once did he criticize or show any dissent towards the club or his manager. On transfer deadline day he has a loan move to Feyenoord collapse because of an injury, he doesn't react and just gets on with his work.

He gets his loan move to Rangers and after a promising start is thrown to the sidelines after the team get torn apart by Celtic. Not once in that period did he post anything against the club or manager. He got criticized by the Rangers fans for hitting the post and not passing the ball late in a game and once again got shoved to the sidelines by Van Bronckhorst but once again he doesn't show any signs of dissent. Late in the season he gets his chance in the team and shows he is levels above the rest, on form he should have played the Europa League final but didn't get any game time, he didn't react and only praised his teammates after the game. Plays the Scottish Cup final and is probably the best player on the pitch at the time of his sub, rather than show some dissent he shows his appreciation to the fans who turned on him during the loan spell.

For a young player to act the way he did is commendable, it would be easy of him to go there with an entitled attitude. It looks like he's going to get a full pre-season with the team for the first time and I think he'll be able to impress a coach like Ten-Haag with his technical ability.

Think it's a big 12 months for him here.

When did he go on loan? A year and a half after his signing, it's not entirely the club's fault but he had some bad luck since he signed for United. The move basically stalled his development and made him stay put for months when he was supposed to go to Parma in 20/21. United should've arranged a loan for him in January after his arrival but we wasted his time mostly with the u-23. The part that wasn't the club's fault was when he got injured when he was supposed to go to Feyenoord.

I kinda get the feeling you haven't really seen any of his games with Rangers because apart from 1 or 2 games, he was good in the few games he got.

I really like your posts, and luckily you’ve got a memory to add examples to the reasonability.

On this mere page we have someone concluding that Man United has done wrong by Amad not playing him in the first team, and someone slagging Man United off for wasting 19m on a player that is obviously not worth it. I would like to put them in a room together to go back and forth with each other, then step out and have a conversation based on the nuanced reality. Unfortunately, some days that room feels like the whole RedCafe. Thanks for disproving that!

On Amad, he reminds me of players like Angel Gomes and Andres Iniesta. I remember being annoyed watching a 20 year old Iniesta being described as a super talent, because when I saw a couple of La Liga games with him, there was absolutely no end product to any of his nice touches and feints. I also remember wanting to see more of Gomes due to his exciting potential with his technique, while reading others concluding Ole was clueless about football because Gomes didn’t get more game time. The reality went on to be that Iniesta was overhyped and underestimated simultaneously, while he did good stuff and bad stuff, had potential and weaknesses. We don’t know yet what Angel Gomes may do on a football pitch, only that it wasn’t madness to think he wasn’t ready for a top 2/top 3 fight in the PL when he was 20.

We have much, much, much less of a clue about what Amad may develop into. Personally, I like his playing style and strengths, and find myself, as with Laird, Hannibal, Shoretire and Garnacho, hoping he could come to fruition at United at some point. Knowing that, there is only a lesser chance it will happen, based on pure statistics. While there is a much more decent chance he may develop into a player that will justify the outlay if he is later sold.

So true, just look at the best players in over the last 20 years in the league.

Thierry Henry - Has a failed move to Juventus before moving to Arsenal and goes on to become the best player in the League from 2002-2006. Got his move to Arsenal when he was 22.

Cristiano Ronaldo - He came here as a talented boy but alot of people were criticizing him in his first couple of season. A fancy winger with no end product is what he was labled. Only when he got to 23 had he matured into a top player.

Kevin De Bruyne - Without doubt the best Attacking Midfielder in the world today. Moves to Chelsea and has a couple of really poor games. Is thrown to the sidelines and sold. Goes to City at 24 and shows everyone his class.

Fans today have no patience which is the issue, you may not see the best of Amad till he is 22-23 but no one wants to wait and the way the fans react here chances are he'll be at another top club when that time comes.

well if they don't show anything what are you appreciating? the fact that they are young?

Thierry Henry was a teenage phenom and played against us in the CL as a starter for a strong Monaco side. Not in the same stratesphere as a young Amad. The fact he was signed for Juve for big money was because he showed something in the first team. He was also dubbed the fastest player in Europe.

Cristiano instantly came in and raised the roof at United. His first season was excellent and his numbers improved each year. He shone in the Euros as a youth so the talent was obvious. I actually saw him at 16 play in the Lausanne tournament and he was different gravy.

Kevin de Bruyne - 10 years ago at 19/20 years of age De Bruyne was a starter in the Belgian pro league, already had 8 caps for Belgium. These players had all shown something at first team football to earn their moves.

The point is people raving about him (Amad) when he has barely shown/played first team football so is a complete unknown quantity. He is behind many players of a similar age so I dunno why people claim he is special. He is an unknown talent. Had a chance in a weak league and failed to shine.

They can't be compared to Diallo and Pellistri though. Have you seen the hamstrings from Modric? They all have a low center of gravity and are quite stocky. Diallo and Pellistri are rather tiny.
the thickness of hamstrings affects your ability to play skillfully, find space, and use football iq? Thats a new one on me

What I mean is that there is no consideration for the notion that players mature at different ages. Amad is a strong example of this. For me, he has all the talent needed to become a very, very special player, but people are losing patience with him too quickly.

People love to mention likes of Messi and Scholes when it comes to physicality not being a major issue but they were the best of their generation or the best of all time level footballers.
You kind of just proved my point. What attributes gave them that because it wasnt really physicality. I dont understand the default position that ‘not big strong and fast’ = shit. The whole ‘modern game’ argument comes from the idea of pressing - you just need to be fit for that, not 6’2 and able to benchpress 400lbs

Yes with all 3 they were talented teenagers, Amad is the same, he tore city apart in the Uefa Youth League. He was in the Atalanta squad at 17, it was widely reported that if he never got his United he'd be moving to Juve a year later.

What we've seen from Amad to date when he's played against players in his own age group is that he is quite clearly a level above, its just the transition to mens football, which takes time. All 3 mentioned above needed time, and he just needs the same.

I hate this PR shit. So he's putting in the hours. Good for him. And then what.
I hope he makes it but this twitter crap gets to me. Do it on the pitch and leave twitter to the bluffers
I suppose all he is trying to do is to show that he is going to work hard to get in the squad/team.

Uefa Youth League is not the same as playing in a premier division. Just because Juve are interested in you doesn't mean you were going there to be a starter like Henry was bought for.

Was he the best player in the Uefa Youth League? Ramos, Piccoli, Adamu, Sucic, Liverpools Curtis Jones, Parrott, Regeer all seemed to have similar or greater impact so to say he was head and shoulders above his age is strange.

Italian Primavera? below is a list of their top scorers and assisters. Juwara had a bigger impact "statistically" and many others (Cangiano) so I don't get it. Not like he was Mason Greenwood in the Italian youth leagues.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pri...n_id/2019/altersklasse/alle/detailpos//plus/1

Players like James John McAtee looks a better prospect at youth level. I am not sure where Diallo was the Wayne Rooney of this generation.

What? No that wasn't the point. Point was whether he might be too lightweight for the PL and someone mentioned players like Modric and Scholes who simply aren't lightweight if you look at how stocky they are. Doesn't mean Amad won't make it in the PL I just found the comparison wrong as Modric and Scholes both were very hard to shrug off the ball with their low center of gravity. Same with Messi.

That's not true you in most cases need to be strong and of at least a decent size. It's why angel Gomez didn't make it

If you are going to be 5'6 or something you have to be really, really good with the ball or be really strong with burst of energy.

In most cases you can only make it if you're an exceptional dribbler who can take advantage of the low center of gravity.

For what its worth I tend not to hype up younger players just for the sake of it. Seen too many prospects not fulfil potential to get unduly excited. With Amad I see the best prospect we've had for some years. Weight and accuracy of pass, awareness of what's around him, ability to beat a man or resist a press. For me, all top drawer for his age.

fair enough at least you have pointed out what impresses you. I think his link passing around the box is high for his age so he has high IQ. He has great composure on the ball. not sure about his ability to beat players.....

Yeah totally agree. I think the problem here is you don’t spent £19m on an 18 year old who’s not going to show promise until 23.

Which is also something I hate. Big clubs trying to speed up the process. Buying a Wayne Rooney or in recent cases Joao Felix I totally understand, but kids like Amad should really be at Atalanta trying to build his profile. Just based on what he’s shown so far.
I think there’s a lot of merit to that. I mean, if you are going to make such a large investment in potential, which it has to be considered when he had so few first team minutes, then the club needs to have a better development plan. Such as a loan lined up, or leaving him at Atalanta for a season or two.

I really like your posts, and luckily you’ve got a memory to add examples to the reasonability.

I appreciate that, thank you. I had battened down the hatches, expecting a deluge of abuse for my fairly critical post, so it’s good to see level headed people come out of the woodwork. I knew they were hiding on here somewhere!

Too much expectation placed on this lads head because we paid a big fee for a kid with hardly any first team experience. He's behind in terms of development due to limited first team game time and he's certainly behind physically as well, but both those will improve. It's how quickly and where he will do this improvement. Do we loan him out again, this time to a club that will give him the vital first team experience he needs. Or will ETH give him some decent game time, he has been known to give youth players a chance. Be interesting to see what happens

a lot of excuses being thrown up for a 30m pound player who couldn't get in the rangers team at all. he has an uphill battle now because of those failings. hope he can still do it but if he can't it will be his fault, either attitude or ability or some blend

We need to commit to giving young players a real chance or just feck off the entire youth system.

At the moment it's just a black hole, where we invest money into talent but then have no idea on how to develop it. Its why young players are now rejecting us for clubs who do have a record of developing players.

Yeah I feel like you might be overreacting a bit here.

Indeed it was a lot of money (basically a gamble) but then we snatch academy players all the time. I have zero expectation but some think he is destined for greatness. Its best to just chill and he'll become what he'll become
a lot of excuses being thrown up for a 30m pound player who couldn't get in the rangers team at all. he has an uphill battle now because of those failings. hope he can still do it but if he can't it will be his fault, either attitude or ability or some blend
I kind of agree. The Scottish league should be a great opportunity for minutes.

I mean we have had Lingard, Rashford, Greenwood, Mctominay, Henderson, Elanga establish themselves in the team. how many other clubs have had that many from the academy? We are no worse than anyone else. Loan moves are a good opportunity he jsut didnt make it count

This is a great example of why a young player should never be signed for these sort of big fees unless they're a genuine wonderkid star playing every week like a Haaland, Mbappe, Musiala, Wirtz, etc. Diallo should never have been considered a £30m player. He had barely played any mins for Atalanta when we signed him. We got him because he was considered one of the most talented players playing at underage level. The talent is 100% there. He's not physically strong enough to deal with top players and getting pressed so intensely. That might come, it might not. However, if Amad had been more like Garnacho or Hannibal for example, a really talented player brought through the academy for normal fees for talented young players, I don't think he'd be getting this sort of criticism at all, even after a failed loan spell with Rangers. I think people would still be fully backing him because of his talent the same way we do Hannibal despite him clearly not being ready to play full games for Utd's 1st team yet. 2 seasons ago Garner went out on loan to Watford and was rubbish. We cut the loan and sent him to Forest where he developed massively and was one of the best players in the Championship last season. Hell you can even look at players like Harry Kane who didn't pull up any trees during his loan at Leicester in the Championship. A failed loan doesn't mean a young player can't still develop.

im not criticising him. im just not going to sit here and say he should be starting games under ETH and throwing up 50 excuses for why he couldn't possibly get into the rangers team. and im going to call people out saying that. if he can't play for rangers he can't play for united without improving, regardless of how much people want it to work out.

its those guys that say he should get a run of games that are creating the pressure, because when he plays poorly and they feel stupid they will turn on him. the right approach is to accept that he has had opportunities and shown that he is not good enough to play for united yet. and it is only his responsibility to take those opportunities, not oles, not woodwards, not van bronkhursts etc

But he might and probably will improve as most players do as they mature. I'm super impressed with the physical work Elanga has been putting in for example, despite him not having anywhere near the same level of talent as Amad or Garnacho imo. If Amad could even get some advice from him or a top athlete like Ronaldo around his diet and fitness regime that could make a huge difference in a relatively short amount of time. Ronaldo himself is probably the best example of how quickly things can turn around. Not that Amad is as talented as a young Ronaldo was, but Ronnie similarly had the exact same struggles Amad faced at Rangers in his first couple seasons at Utd where his ability was unquestionable, but he was being bullied and kicked around the place too easily. I don't think many are asking for Amad to suddenly be our 1st choice winger and play every game, but it would be good for him to get some game time off the bench and give him some cup games to see how he handles the step up. Personally, I think he's already had one really good performance for us against Wolves. Still very early in his career in the grand scheme of things.
