My appreciation of what he had done for us definitely waned after the LVG/Mourinho years but I have a new found respect for what he's achieved in management.

I can see why he's staying or wants a Prem job as #1, and it's unclear what coaching role he was offered (https://theathletic.com/3263978/202...at-brought-erik-ten-hag-to-manchester-united/) but for his career, spending 2-3 seasons assisting Ten Hag like Ten Hag did for Guardiola at Munich. Rooney seems to have some of the intangibles that work in English football, so studying tactics might be good for him before just taking a mid-table Prem job with little upside and a big chance of failure.
Ten Hag never assisted Guardiola, he was the manager of Bayern's reserves. So yes they cooperated and where kept in the loop about what was going on in both teams, but that's completely different to being an assistant manager.
Ten Hag was managing in Germany's fourth league level, so comparable to what Rooney is doing here.
Don't think much, if anything, is comparable to what Rooney has had to do at Derby.
Managing a reserve team is miles apart from having to find free agents and get them playing cohesive football against the odds in a short space of time.
Yes, the work he has done at Derby is exceptional under very unique circumstances. I didn't mean to compare the work they did, just the leagues they were working in.
I'd like to think the Championship is a step up from Germany's forth tier, but I am certainly no expert at lower level German football so you'll probably be able to set me straight on that I'd imagine!

Derby were deducted 21 points this season had they not been, they’d be 17th in the Championship and be clear of relegation.
He’s done a remarkable job despite the financial mess that is Derby County.
I think either way there are lot of factors that applied for Ten Hag, but won't necessarily for Rooney:
-getting to work with a cult figure like Guardiola
-getting to see the inner workings of a huge club for the first time
-increasing job opportunities by learning to speak (better) German
-putting his name out there in a bigger country
-German clubs seem more willing than English to hire young coaches, in particular from Bayern's second team actually

Yeah, of course, but he was training players to go into Guardiola's team, that's gotta still be useful. You'd think being Guardiola or Klopp's U-23 manager would be an obvious move for a young manager tipped for stardom.
Absolutely, and I'd argue that this experience can be more valuable than being an assistant.

How did the end of the season go for him? Kind of lost track towards the end.
From what I’ve been told by my mates who are Derby fans, he’s been paying for travel and equipment out of his own pocket, so fair play to him for sticking around for so long. I imagine after the latest setback with the ownership he just felt it was time to walk away. Such a mess at derby

Improvements to the back room staff set up so I don’t think next season will be as bad.
They most definitely are but I think he might relish that sort of fight.
It would be an enormous opportunity to move up divisions but obviously it's not without it's risks.
Think it would be a great move for him to go under the wing of a more experienced manager for awhile and maybe get involved with your youth set up.
I genuinely had no idea there was a potential takeover, Kenyon is a prick but he knows how football works so yeah, that would likely see quite the improvement.
Even if things stay I’d assume on pitch at least there would be improvements, although that is largely dependent on how they deal with the Usmanov situation.
I'm surprised he stayed this long tbh. With the whole administration and takeover shitshow in the background, he's been very patient and resilient and almost did enough to keep them up last season.

Fair enough to Rooney, this is not what he signed up for when he originally joined. He's stayed way longer than he should have.

It would have been good to see him as part of Ten Hag’s staff. Rooney might think he’s above being a coach but I think it would have been a really useful experience for him to work under someone who’s coached at Bayern with Pep’s methods and has then gone on to have his own success at Ajax.
Rooney has said before how highly he rated Van Gaal’s methods and think he would consider himself to have the same principles as the likes of Ten Hag/Pep.
I don’t see it happening now though as Ten Hag has assembled his staff and also not sure if there is any friction between Rooney and Ronaldo after their recent tiff.

We’re going to sign him as a back up to Ronaldo, you can see it coming.

Ideally he takes another Championship job with a team that has a bit of money.
If he's not in employment by the end of the World Cup i wouldn't be surprised if he was the next England manager.

To be fair to Wayne he specifically stated he would stay to work with Kirchner who was meant to be buying the club and was all in until a week or so back when the Kirchner deal fell apart. It now looks as though the club is going to be sold to a mate of Mel Morris who brought Rooney to the club, fed him a pack of lies and sold him down the river so it is hardly surprising he is not keen on a repeat performance. Wayne has been paying his own expenses for a while and has done the best he could in the situation so he does not deserve any criticism here. I would imagine the next owner will have his own ideas over who he wants anyway and it may well be that he would have wanted to let Wayne go regardless.
Still 1000x more professional than the clowns that ran that club into the ground. That's why he's left at the end of the day.
