Reading some of the posts here, you'd think we were dealing with a mercurial genius who lost his way, like a Ronaldinho or a Cantona.

Really it's more a case of a former young prospect who didn't pan out. Players like Martial are a dime a dozen.
Talk about underrating someone. He was a golden ball winner ffs and backed that up with being our best player on numerous occasions. It’s not worked out and I don’t think it ever will now, but there’s a constant need to downplay Martial on this board.

Golden Boy, not Golden Ball.

Other winners include Alexandre Pato, Anderson, Isco, Mario Balotelli, and Renato Sanchez. Some very esteemed careers in there.

According to you what is Martial good at?
Running into trouble - over and over again.

Technically exceptional i would class as players like De Bruyne, Messi, Salah, Chiesa etc. They have the footballing brain to match their skillset - Martial doesn't.

I can see him staying this season. Will get plenty of game time as number 9 when Ronaldo gets a rest and it's not likely we will find a buyer for him anyway.

Keep him and go big on the striker department next summer I say.

Will he though? Suppose he gets 5 games and does feck all in all of them? Why wouldn't we just stick Elanga/Rashford/Bruno/Garnacho up there instead?

Sensible approach. We know he is supremely talented, just needs the right motivating. Maybe EtH is the man to do it. We can’t afford to simply write off players when our budget to replace them is limited, and our squad is bare.
I'm not sure what you mean enough chances.
I would love to see ETH give him a chance to show his unmistakable talent. He could save us a fortune
I actually think ten Hag may get the best out of martial..: he made tadic look good ffs. There’s obviously talent in martial and we seen some of it under Solskjær but I think LVG was the one who got the best version of martial. Everyone deserves a fresh slate now that there going to be getting proper modern coaching and none of this old school crap. We can’t afford to replace everyone and with losing so many players on free transfers, it’s a chance for others to step up!
Said a million times before, a world class talent but as flakey as feck. Doesnt have the mentality to match the ability.

And i'm basing that on the last seven years of watching his lazy arse performances for the first team..
sigh
Some of you guys are gluttons for punishment
masochists, the lot of them
His technical ability is not all that great. Just because he dribbles like a Ballerina people think that he is some high quality technical player.

I look at his finishing for example - he tends to just finesse his finishes but doesn’t have much else ways to regularly finish by.

He is technically very precise but not very versatile.
it really isn't is it. He can finish in one type of way, finesse shot or curler. Can't drill the ball across goal. only favours certain positions in front of goal
This is insane he is technically exceptional on the ball

He is not finesse shooting into an empty net it's from difficult as hell angles and they are hard shots too

I'm no fan of Martial but people love to exaggerate
pretty unremarkable. There is not much he actually does. quite a limited game.
I understand what the poster means though, he is technically precise but doesn't have much range to his finishing and passing, its all short passing, close range finish, dribbling in tight spaces.
He is brilliant at this though.
exactly. However he isn't brilliant at dribbling or finishing. He can only slot the ball across he keeper or shoot from the left of the goal

I get the into trouble bit - but running, more like walking

You forgot to mention other past winners like Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas, Kylian Mbappe and Sergio Aguero... to name a few. It isnt something everyone can just win. It is a big thing to win the golden boy. You clearly need to be very talented to win it.

So Martial is good at nothing at all? If you hold that opinion why should I listen when you say he has poor technique.
I'm not really bothered by what you think - i'm entitled to my own opinion.

I don't hold a lot of hope for him, to be honest. Up till last season I always felt it was just about not clicking and that he would eventually come good. But I wouldn't be bothered if he was sold. If he remains here, lets hope ETH can utilise his technique well and coach the rest of decision making bit in to him. I doubt it as it seems Martial just doesn't care enough.

Martial needs selling - I think we mostly agree on that. However, we may not be able to regardless of what ETH thinks

I used to be a proud member of Martial FC, the 2 trigger points for me hitting the eject button were:
1. The game where a team mate (I think Greenwood) played a forward ball and Martial made no effort to move for it until the moment had passed, the ball was rolling out, it became obvious he was the closest player and had basically wasted the chance, then he seemed to realise how horrible it all looked and pretended to try and go for it after the fact
2. Ole's pleading screams from the stands "Anto ... run!!" while he just stood perplexed, watching the action unfold around him.

I can only hope for his and our sake that if he can't be sold, in a system where what to do when we're in possession is constantly drilled into his head, he'll not be as clueless as where to run or what to do. We all know he doesn't have the instinct, and incidentally no manager since LVG seems to have ever focused on that side of the game till ETH. One can only hope!

I feel limited, but real, sympathy for Martial. He is not a player with a "natural reading of the game", and as a teacher I feel strongly that such a thing is actually vanishingly rare, it's all about the coaching, no matter how reflective a player is. And Martial, as with several other young United attackers, looks like he's been left to figure it out for himself. Like a 12 year old told to work out Newton's laws of motion. Good luck Tony, let's see you banging in 20 a season this year, see you Monday, thanks.

I don't see why some decent coach with vision can't present a style of football which means that he should be in positions x y and z most of the time and occasionally do a few other things. He can be a cog in a machine if properly coached to do so, and he's clearly a very competent finisher.

This describes every '20/21 game.

He could have a resurgence but many are getting carried away here. He has been unfit and unable to beat a man or do pretty much anything useful for a while now. His finishing has cost us massively the past few years as well. Will be a masterstroke if EtH gets a song or anything notable out of him. Only positive is that his shit stint in Spain might’ve knocked him down a peg to keep him from sulking in a bit part role.

I just read from 1 of the Muppetiers sources(take it or leave it, I just give you the info) :

ETH made a long conversation with Martial and told him that its his final chance to do something meaningful in top level football, and that from now - it could only can go down, and if he wants a place in united and the NT - He will need to work the hardest that he's ever been in his life.

ETH showed him where Tony has a place in his team and what are his(ETH) plans for him(Tony). When Tony left his office - He was on the verge of crying. Up until now Martial is one of the most impressive players in the pre season training.

Lacks the mental strength to revive his career. It’s in terminal decline and he’ll be so dire for ETH I’d expect he’ll see more game time for the reserves than the first team.

Some twitter accounts have said that ETH is impressed with him. Lot of chit chat of him being the most impressive in first week of training.

Well with Ronaldo wanting out Martial is going to take his spot in the first team.
I've always been a fan even though he's frustrating, another chance?

All you've done is agree with posts which shared your opinion and disagreed with the one which didn't. Question is What makes yours the right one?

Didn't think he'd leave on those wages and with his wretched spell in Spain. Will be interesting to see if he can resurrect his career here under ten Hag.

That Martial FC revival
Half this forum will be eating humble pie with a side of egg on their face when Martial law gets declared and he wins the golden boot whilst Donny runs the show. Rashford off the left, 15 goals, Sancho off the right 10 goals and 10 assists, Martial up top 25 goals.

It’s raining goals, hallelujah it’s raining goals, Ten Hag!
