I read people are saying he's rubbish.
Why are we being linked to him? Is there some kind of potential to unlock?
Since our recruitment team have been napping for a decade we're basically going -
Hi ETH mate do you know anyone?

Genuinely seems like we've decided to completely ignore our scouts and given Ten Hag carte blanche in the market. Given how our scouting department has been performing lately you can understand why, but not convinced it's a good sign either.

It's not just that they've been napping, they've also largely been replaced/released this summer.

It can’t be that he’s got potential no? Even though Leipzig and Ajax both rate him
RB wants to get rid because he isn't good enough for them. Hardly setting the world on fire is he? Would be a baffling signing if it happens.

If Ronaldo leaves we don't need potential anyway we have enough young talented attackers. This money is better invested in other parts of the pitch like RB for example.

Reports suggest we are looking at a RB. It’s just assumption to make up that this impacts on everything else. We will sell players, we will buy them.

I wish folk would stop losing their shit over pointless things.

What is the point of murtough? I wouldn't describe him as particularly new anymore
The problem with murtough is he was also part of the old failed regime and seems to have gotten a promotion. This window looks to be a sign of business as usual for us as well. Concerning for those who think major change is needed.

Facundo Pellistri on regular match time:
Right now, I want to feel good again after the holidays, well trained, more than anything because this year is very important both at club and national team level. You have to be ready for everything and prepare well. I want to have the maximum continuity of minutes to try to arrive well.

I’m not looking for a particular league. It’s easy to say ‘earn minutes’ because nobody promises them to you, and you have to earn them. It’s a complicated search, but I’m going to try to find the best option to play, show myself and feel good.
On his Alavés spell:
I didn’t leave Alavés very happy, because I hardly played in any games. I left with a wonderful club, a wonderful group of people, a wonderful medical team and a wonderful staff. In that sense, even though it was complicated in terms of football, that whole period in Vitoria was wonderful. They never gave me a reason, but well? Every manager is different. Maybe they liked different things to what I could give them, and that’s totally respectable. It’s up to the coach to decide. I always gave my best, I trained 100%, and I was ready to play. The balance is negative. I would have liked to play more.

I think scouts are initially doomed until ten Hag knows and trusts them and their candidates. For now, he trusts what he knows and can depend on, but not only that, initial recruitment is just as much about personality and character, which is where he's pointedly going with those he knows or are young enough to be completely malleable.

Once he's got a foundation in place that he can depend upon, which can also destroy the cliques and entrenched negativity we have running through us, he can branch out.

So this window isn't just about talent - he has a hell of a lot more to work on.

We currently don’t have a decent scouting system in place, they have left the club. Until that’s sorted we are better off going with what the manager wants.

Moyes ignored our scouting to his detriment. LvG signed whoever we asked him to most of the time, Jose went to an extent with who he knew and his contacts, not who our scouts pointed out. Ole did as he was told.

We've sought out ten Hag, and I assume have made concessions he expects to be met. We've basically handed the keys over to him because our structure is non-existent and we have no default philosophy by which we bring players through nor recruit them, so it's simply not a surprise things have turned out like this.

What is perhaps the bigger question is how far down the rabbit hole we'll go for the manager because it's one thing bringing in who he'd like, and another spending a cumulatively astronomical amount.

Ole actually had his own personal scout and ignored the United scouts

We might have a good scouting system in place who knows, all we know is that they are redundant at the moment and we don't have decent a decent dof in place. It's all very well saying its fine for ten hag to go with what he knows for now but if they don't work out, that could mean we don't have cl football again next year and struggle to recruit again

I am getting a bit worried. I do not have a problem with asking the manager who he would prefer as you say our scouting system is being overhauled. It is the FdJ situation. We desperately need midfielders, do we let Barcelona string us along or just move on? Who do we sign as striker? RB? Do we give Ajax all they want for Martinez. I can just see it being last minute moves.

Fernando Polo has this to say about Frenkie de Jong:
DE JONG
  • He has not been contacted by Chelsea
  • Those close to him have also been informed by the press of Barça's intentions to reduce his fee without having received any official call about it
  • He wants to continue (with Barcelona)
This article mostly contains reminders. However, there is a bit of new info here and there (summarised here):

EDIT: Also covered here (thanks to @Rolaholic in the Frenkie de Jong thread)

I've been very much on the side of trying to sign De Jong, I honestly think he's a great player who would make a huge difference to us, but if he's still completely adamant at this stage that he wants to stay at Barca and feels the need to keep reiterating this, then we really need to be looking elsewhere or we're going to end up embarrassed again.

I don't understand why the club would push so hard for a player without privately receiving assurance that he would make the move.

We've heard Ten Hag has been in regular contact with De Jong so it could be just the management teams response to Barca trying to paint De Jong ad a mercenary.

That part is only getting reiterated by the Barcelona journalists and for good reason; they haven't received any new info from de Jong's camp about whether he is open to leaving. With that said, the last part of the article indicates that de Jong is aware that Barcelona wants to sell him, so at least the player knows that he's not immune to a sale.

Only the United journalists have hinted at de Jong being open to join us, unfortunately.

He is due a shit ton of money.. Even if he was open to move, its in his interest to publicly claim he wants to stay.

The United journalists have briefed that de Jong's concerns have been allayed/personal terms won't be an issue, so it's not like they're going in blindly like they did for Fabregas.

Then say “I want my £p’s”. Everyday “I want to say at Barcelona” while Laporta is going on a “De Jong has to agree to our terms or kick rocks” tour. He’s coming off like a Stockholm syndrome victim. Is he Harley Quinn or something?

We have 2 forwards, in Rashford and Martial, who we know are capable of scoring 20 goals a season, when properly motivated.
Would that be 20 goals in all competitions or 20 goals in the EPL only?

He maybe free but will he improve the starting XI, I think not.

He maybe 20 & I don't know much about him but if he was bought to replace Ronaldo we are in big trouble.

As for FdJ, if he stays at Barca & when the window closes Barca still haven't paid him the money they owe him & reduce his wages as well, then he is an absolute idiot.

That should be our sales-pitch. "If you stay with Barcelona you are an absolute idiot. Are you an absolute idiot Frenkie, or do you sign for us ?"

Why is Reshad Rahman constantly posted in this thread? His FDJ timeline is an absolute speculative mess. Nothing he tweets is ever predictive.

He's a Barca fan with a rating/tier system for sources so it's an easy way of posting Spanish tweets with a translation whilst also retaining some degree of reliability with transfers from La liga in general also.

Yup, this definitely looks like Barcelona pushing the player to Chelsea to create some competition.
Joan Laporta -
"So we would like Azpilicueta and Alonso, any chance you're interested in De Jong"

I agree, obviously an agenda from Barcelona here.
