So far this year, I think his one on one tackling has been excellent, but he hasn't looked comfortable joining in the attack. How am I doing?

Played with the B team in the first game and didn't even feature today. Obviously it was an opportunity for Laird to get some minutes, but it's looking more and more likely he won't stay at the club. Interesting to see how ETH uses him in the next preseason games.

Unless Dalot gets injured, I think hes in trouble. Dont see how he gets back in. And even if that does happen, I reckon we will look to move him on.
Unless he somehow improves a lot (which could happen as we finally have a coach)

We should actually move him before a season of being frozen out leaves his value in the toilet.

I had high hopes for him when he signed, but he's turned out to be a dud, unfortunately.

What were your hopes based on though? You could see he lacked even basic dribbling ability, looked so uncomfortable on the ball, his crossing was dogshit, all he had was a mean tackle. What on earth did people see in this guy? I remember people frothing with excitement about signing him but never understood why.

I mean, I wasn't screaming for him to be signed or anything

I thought he looked a good prospect at Palace, and was hoping that he would improve the offensive side of his game.

Yup. There was some of us who kept talking about his technical ability but the the tackles had everyone excited.

There are winners and losers with a new manager, AWB is definitely a loser.

He needs to get his agent working to find another club asap.

He was going to be released by Palace until they saw him slide tackle Zaha in training. Says it all really, he will never be good enough for this level.

I have to be honest; I don't recall anyone being particularly excited by the signing of AWB.
You should look back at the transfer thread, the fee was even hailed as great negotiations by Ed, to get him for a mere £45m rising to £50m and to keep Zara's sell on clause still in tact when Palace had originally wanted that removed as part of this deal (the sheer balls they had to even ask that). Highlights the utter idiocy of our fan base.

Dreadful signing. Makes no sense for an attacking team to have such a defensive RB. Maybe he'd be good for Stoke.

Nope there were fights in both the AWB transfer thread and the maguire one. I protested against both signings.

I remember the forum being fairly divided over both signings. While I did think AWB looked a good prospect - albeit with limitations - I certainly never wanted us to sign Maguire.

Sell him now while we still can. His contract is up in 2024 so now is the time.

I saw him do a clean tackle to win the ball back and this was probably the first time I thought "who gives a shit about these tackles". I want my fullbacks to attack

It seems we do actively want to sell, but it'll be hard to find a taker.

He's what, 24 now, so it's pretty clear that he is never going to be competent in an offensive sense. No modern manager will touch him, and the only supposed interest was from Palace, who only seemed to want to commit to a loan.

Having not seen a lot of him at Palace, I thought he's young, supposedly promising, English, how bad a signing can it be, albeit expensive.

I think it became clear within half a dozen games this was going to be a bloody tough project. Everything he was bad at were things that are not easy for a coach to wave a magic wand at. You're better off having players that have tons of ability but terrible positioning, or bad stamina, or bad final product. These things you can tap into the players mentality, change his regime, or drill instructions.

It's why Dalot is the better work in progress, a few of the pieces needed that would make a huge difference are not improbable to find. Might not happen but the manager has a chance.

The real £50m down the drain.
The scout that recommended him should not be employed.

Man you guys are harsh. I think we should sell because we want to be a top side that controls games but he can be a fantastic player for anyone outside the top six or so.

You're correct.

I do think he looked pretty good at Palace - but I'm obviously judging that from a small sample size - and I'm pretty sure he won their POTY at one point and was called up to the England squad. So, he was obviously showing promise, but his technical limitations and lack of offensive ability were pretty glaring.

In hindsight, it was obviously a massive stretch to think that these things could be coached into him. However, had we a better manager than Ole with a track record of improving players, he would likely look better than he does today.

I'm sure a tonne of clubs in the bottom half of the table would take him, but his price tag and wages will be a stumbling block.

Totally unproven players like Neco Williams went for 17M this summer, so I'm sure someone would give us 25M+ for him even with his wages.

ETH wants to play modern football which always meant the end for AWB here.

What baffles me the most is that his flaws were well known to any passive EPL watcher long before we signed him. I mean, there was a massive debate on here about his ball abilities up to a year before we signed him. Then I didn't even know he was so fecking lazy in supporting the attack, off the ball.
Not only did we sign a player with such apparent flaws, we made him the worlds most expensive fullback at that time. The same summer our coach decleared he wanted to build a great attacking side. This club is/was full of frauds.
A criminal transfer.

Well, Liverpool have proven to be extremely astute at selling players, and unfortunately his wages will be a deterrent. I think we'll find him hard to shift and would expect maybe 15m to 20m, at an absolute maximum.

AWB won't improve enough to be a player for ETH. The way ETH wants the full-back to contribute in possession is not his game and never will be.

Unfortunately that particular manager talked some fine talk in his early days, but didn't deliver on it.

Just sell him, you can't play possession football with someone so poor on the ball.
