Tadic and Antony had different tasks.

Watching Antony I was always a bit put off by how sloppy and imature he came off. But his stats is really good if you compare it to his function on the pitch. People tend to compare every winger to Salah/Mane, making the fallacy that we will be a copy of Liverpool.

Antony is more of a playmaker responsible for progressing the ball, and I think the task he solved for Ajax is more similar to the one Giggs/Beckham did. Looking at his stats, they are actually very similar to Trent Alexander-Arnold. It reminds me a bit about something Pirlo wrote in his thesis:

«As we will see below, the meaning of role is changing in modern football. It is no longer a fixed position that identifies the characteristics of a player, but more and more the different functions and therefore the tasks that a player performs in the match identify him. Therefore, the characteristics of the players are enhanced through the tasks he is called upon to perform.»

Antony is outstanding compared to the very best players in the world in terms of;

- Progression of the ball (both carries and passing)
- Passes and crosses into the penalty area
- Carries into the penalty area
- Recoveries

Furthermore, his goal and assist stat is not as bad as a few of you make out either. He has played 3510 minutes in the Eredivise in two season. That is approx one PL-season. In the time period, he has 17 goals and 12 assists. All from open play as far as I am aware. Considering his age, I think that is very good.

But more importantly, what area of play do Man Utd have to improve significantly? I would argue ball progression. We struggled due to poor build up and transition-play. And what is the main characteristics of Martinez, Eriksen, Malacia, Frenkie and Antony? They are great at progressing the ball. In my opinion, that is the most important trait of all of these players.

EtH once said that Frenkie makes the attackers better. I think that would also be the case for Antony.
promotion post right there......quality

Great post. We were desperately lacking in that area last season - someone who can just move us from static defence/midfield and progress the ball forward.

I think Elanga will have a spot, maybe another academy player as well.

I heard we were interested in Bergwijn, that would be quite a good plan B. I wouldn't know where to start, could look at Danjuma, Gakpo, Thorgan Hazard, Kluivert. I dont think we are in the position yet to manage several top players for the same position.

Real Madrid, Bayern, City get away with it because they are winning trophies.
I like the look of Danjuma and Gakpo but the thing for me is, all these players you mentioned are left wingers and we already have enough players that are solid on the left - Rashford, Martial, Sancho. On the right Sancho is the only one really that is reliable there, which is why Antony would be ideal. There are other right wingers we can look at (like Olise or Neto) but I feel its Antony or bust for this position.

And if we really have no intention of signing a winger if we can't get Antony then I'd hope we get a solid attacking right back. With someone like Lamptey for example, I think we can get away with playing Bruno or Eriksen on the right wing because they can tuck in and act as playmaker while Lamptey provides the width

Dalot-Varane-Martinez-shaw
Eriksen-FdJ
Sancho-Bruno
Anthony-Martial (how does that sound eh)
That doesn’t sound that well at all. At first due to the fact Antony is not written with a ‘h’ (at least, the Ajax Antony isn’t ) and the Ajax-Antony Is not for sale, so you have a foreign player in your lineup if you’re mentioning the Ajax-Antony

There are talks on the media about Ajax signing a replacement for him from FC Porto, anyone with good insight on that?
That is because Ajax is looking at the longer run. They want to have a ready replacement for Antony for when he is for sale (and that is not now). Conceicao has already passed medical tests and signed the contract. Probably just due to Ajax being a stock market listed company that presentation is done a bit later.
Conceicao is bought to play behind Antony the coming season.

Not a replacement, Ajax doesn't want to sell Antony. They've said as much yet again yesterday.
Ajax have been very clear. It's the same situation as Martinez, you either pay up or nothing will happen. So 80m euros it is.
Exactly that!

They've brought in both Bergwijn and Conceicao so they have the ability to cover the loss of Antony if we can come to agreement for his transfer....we don't have enough depth and we don't have enough quality depth to not bring in a forward

Get rid of Ronny and get this guy in I've said it before use Martial and Rashford as the strikers. Antony as a wide man . Then look for a striker if needed.

Do we have enough money to bring in a 70m player who isnt a starter? if we buy this guy, id assume Rashford isn't fancied and is done.

If Antony comes in, I think him and Sancho will be the number 1 options on the wings. I think Rashford becomes the player who comes in and out on the wings and backup striker. Even though Rashford has looked better in pre-season, I still think he drops down the pecking order.

Unless Ronaldo buggers off i doubt we try for him, even if he did i find it unlikely .

Ajax have no need to sell so they can sit on him and wait ro see if his stock grows or not, we could try again next summer.

He will be playing with inferior players this season with some of Ajax's best players having left. They are again in a rebuilding stage. The best scenario for Antony and Ajax is Brazil having a great WC which could then increase his value.

we should have enough money to bring in both Antony and FDJ if and when the time comes. The only expense so far has been Lisandro as the Malacia money was covered by selling Andres

I remember there was plenty of talk about United needing reinforcements up front even before Ronaldo's decision. If Ronaldo (hopefully) leaves then the front line needs numbers and quality. Rashford and Martial will get plenty of game time even with the purchase of Antony.

Well it could also mean that he shines even more as no one else is there to steal his shine.
Goes both ways.

No he's not. I really don't get where this is coming from. Haller wasn't that good and Gravenberch was already replaced with ease by Taylor in the last few matches of the season. The only ones that left that weren't replaced with similar quality are Mazraoui and Martinez, but that's the way it works at Ajax. Not really inferior players or a rebuild, it's a continuously evolving team due to the Ajax not playing in a top 5 league and Ajax even added quality with Bergwijn and Wijndal.

But yes, it's the best scenario for Antony to stay at Ajax and play a great WC.

we have only 4 forwards so even if everyone stays and we add Antony, they all would still get plenty of minutes given the number of matches we'll play this season. Ronnie leaving absolutely means we would need to add 2. I just don't trust Amad or Pellestri to make an impact

Agreed. I think with the sum it'll take to get Antony (assuming it's 60m or so) he won't be bought to warm the bench.

I think our front three will be Sancho, Ronaldo/Martial, Antony. With Rashford getting his games on the LW and up front from time to time.

I hope we can fix it at around 50m plus add ons.

£70m is just too much for potential. I know he did well in the CL and internationals, but that doesn't mean much for the PL.

Pay the money, 68m and summer incomings are done.
If we pay that or close to it I think well abandon the De Jong pursuit, I believe its between the two of them in terms of price.

We are obviously not even paying close to that. Offer them 55m plus Laird and if they reject it then move on. There are alternatives:

Berardi
Pulisic
Asensio
Olise
Neto
Chukwueze
Sane
Paqueta
Sarr

Or we can look at left wingers: Gouiri, Gakpo, Danjuma, Werner

Do. Not. Want.

We have like 6 wingers and ONE striker, who is 38-years old and apparently wants to leave. (No, Martial is not a ST)
Another manager, another transfer window, another sorrow.
No balance at all.
I hope all this is media b.llshit and someone is doing his job.
Even a kid will find shocking buying another LB and CB as first signings.

Not even worth 45m. Hed be nailed on the right though, which makes me curious who is preferred out of Sancho and Rashford for the left.

Absolutely no chance that we will not sign De Jong if he agrees to come.
