Laporta openly states they sort to agree a deal with MUFC because it pressures FDJ to make a choice. It's so direct i love it
If de Jong stays, he's clearly a bigger **** than anyone gave him credit for. He's like that person who knows they're in a shitty relationship but stays in the hopes that their partner will change, even though deep down, the know they never will

He went by the name of Wayne Rooney
In future, we need to be tracking/scouting/identifying/signing these players much earlier on before they are signed by a club like Barcelona. That way, we haven't got to deal with these knobs and we get these players at their absolute peaks.
Easier said than done though. Don't forget that Barcelona also signed him for a huge fee and had to beat off competition from PSG, which is part of the reason why he got this huge wage in the first place. If we talk about signing players even earlier, ee recently spent big money on Amad and Pellistri but they haven't exactly progressed either. This is a tough gig.

Interesting point, when you bear in mind that Barcelona are Frenkie's "boyhood club, his dream club, the biggest club in the World", blah blah blah...
But he would have snubbed them for PSG if Barcelona hadn't offered even more money..?
Hmmm, I dunno...

The more I think about this, the more my personal opinion becomes that we should very rarely if ever pay for a player from another "huge" club unless it's a steal. We should always be aiming to sign the next big thing, not the current big thing that was already paid for once and now apparently isn't worth keeping.

Signings from top clubs, not counting free transfers, since 2000:
Real Madrid: Varane, Di Maria
Bayern Munich: Schweinsteiger, Hargreaves
Juventus: Ronaldo, Pogba
Barcelona: Cruyff

Signings from the next tier of big clubs, since 2000:
Chelsea: Matic, Mata
Arsenal: Sanchez, RVP
Dortmund: Sancho, Mkhitaryan, Kagawa
Athletico: de Gea

Aside from RVP and de Gea, can we say that any of these purchases have been a real success, a clever signing, the ones that made the difference for us? I feel like signing from Real, Bayern, Juventus, Barca is just a bad idea and we should generally avoid it.

How about we purged all the Bayern fans in here ?
Oh feck. Guess it's time to lay low until the idea passes :nervous:

And I haven't even started my big off topic discussion about the underlying microaggression of the "to be fair" idiom yet

No he hasn't made it pretty clear. They have kept very silent The only thing made pretty clear is the constant quotes from Barca officials that he either adjusts or should leave.
There was literally quotes yesterday from his agent Dursun stating he refuses to take a pay cut and feel his client is being extorted.

Which just confirms again that Hunter was talking out of his arse.

Barca absolutely do not want to give him the full settlement package to leave, they want him to bend over backwards, by either giving up tens of millions in wages (whilst being made a sub CB), or give up a massive amount in settlement.

Bunch of cnuts.

Stay firm FDJ, take em to the fecking cleaners. Reckon he can get 20mil out of them.
Yeah I think hunter was wrong too, he sounded like a raving Barca fan and was just collating his assumptions rather than reporting absolute fact.

We can only be patient. And also be prepared to do without him if need be. It's hard!

It's nothing like a failed relationship you weirdos. He's not a '****' or a '****' and football clubs aren't girlfriends.

Who hurt you? Jesus Christ can you gain some perspective and look at a financial/career decision as just what it is. I do hope you're all ok and it's a strange joke I just don't get but some of you creep me the feck out and I honestly wonder about your mental health.

Yes, I'm very hungover (and possibly still drunk) but that's not the point :)

As oppose to the wonderful signings from lesser clubs like Maguire, AWB, Fred, Lindelof, James, Lukaku, Bailly, Martial, Depay, Schneiderlin, Rojo, Fellaini.....

You do realize our transfers have been shit for over 15 years, right?

He asked to play for free for Barcelona but Barcelona being the kind souls that they are offered to pay him 400k a week despite that. Money didn't play a part in his decision at all. Honest.

Barca work under the illusion that he can't just sit tight and take his money. There's literally nothing Laporta can do about it.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and probably a lot more clubs than we know, are crooks indeed. But that's business, politics and the most popular sport, all mixed in one.

I tend to be fascinated by events like these, because this is business acumen and innovation, in accounting, in PR, in negotiations, in marketing. It's quite impressive.

To compare, think of BP after the last big oil leak. We know they're crooks. They know we know. And now they need to spin stories to have us forgive and/or forget.

Barcelona are doing this balancing act for many years. The current management is just the latest in a series of populist presidents being elected. And that's quite normal and to be expected, to be fair.

You get elected by promising stupid stuff. Then while in power, you do whatever you can to make your period in power look as strong as it can, whatever the long term consequences may be. It will likely be someone else's problem anyway.
Yes. I’m against all that stuff. The more people accept it or endorse it, the worse it gets.

Don't think this is happening. The player has no appetite to move and the Utd move seems like a backup plan for De Jong.
I mean, I can't blame De Jong. He's in a really tough situation, even as people keep saying he holds all the cards here. He's got three options, basically, as long as no other club expresses a solid interest:

1. Stay at Barcelona on his current contract and become public enemy number one. As a backup CB.

2. Stay at Barcelona and take a wage cut. Still a nonzero chance of having to be a backup CB.

3. Agree a payoff with Barcelona, sign for United and give up the chance of competing for major trophies.

I can't imagine any of these options look particularly attractive to him. And it seems unlikely that any of the CL contenders would make a move for him this summer. Holding on, hoping that the situation changes somehow is probably his best bet for now.

Cruyff? He was at United 1996-2000.

If someone is going to partake in the conversation then is it too much to ask that they educate themselves a bit first? All the information has been done to death in here over more than 1000 pages - it’s not hard to catch up. Otherwise I think the poster has a point.
True muppets read 1,000 pages to get up to speed before storming the thread with "hail Gonzo"!

Has any of our signings been a great success after Sir Alex?

His remaining contract is worth 80m euros plus.

It's fair to say, if they want him gone, they are gonna have to cough up, big.
It's pretty clear that they want him gone. He is the one that does not want to go.

Missed them, can you provide the media?
Out of curiosity, why do you think this would be the case?
There are about millions of reasons. Apart from more money, Manchester United football club offers absolutely nothing compared to other big clubs. We operate on a broken structure, 9 years running, embarrassment after another, failed manager appointments, failed big money transfers, being an underdog to 2 of our biggest rivals and among the bigger issues,
