There is a reason he is leaving on a free. Injuries ruined his early promise and potential. I dont think he is a risk and project we should take on currently. We have enough of them in the squad already.

I'd shit my intestines laughing if we could sell Asensio to United. Was a huge talent when he arrived but never took the next step. He is ok against the bottom-10 La Liga teams and is a useful substitute with 20-30 minutes remaining. We have a current replacement in Vazquez (also our backup RB) and future replacements in Arribas/Peter.

We would then be stuck with an average player on a big contract.
He's on 120k per week I think. Not exactly big for us, maybe offer him a 3 year contract. I'd take that over relying on Amad or Elanga. Like I said earlier, Asensio is not my first choice or second or third but if it's him or nothing then I'd take him.

I wish Pellistri got more chances this preseason because I think he's better than Amad and Elanga and could have proven to be a decent back up to Sancho but it seems like he's not in our plans and is likely to leave on loan

That contract is not big for us but when trying to offload him that contract will be too big for the teams we would want to flog him off to. Think of basically most of the deadwood we want to sell, they would get more interest if they were not so well paid.

That's true and probably why he doesn't have any suitors even with one year left.

United, determined to make a formal offer to Madrid of more than 30M € for Asensio.

There are other English and Italian clubs willing to bid on this market.

His departure, difficult: Ancelotti is counting on him for the season.

It's possible that we will not be able to get Antony over the line and, given how late it is in the window, we wouldn't have time to start from scratch on a backup target - it's conceivable that we might be progressing things a bit with Asensio (another left-footed, right-sided forward), in case we can't make a deal with Ajax for Antony.

Of course, it's also possible that this story is a load of rubbish, concocted by someone in Spain.

Sounds like media/agent bollocks to me.

Tidy player, fabulous left foot shot and scores some spectacular goals every season. But he’s not the consistent performer we need and he lost a step (or two) after his injury of a couple seasons past. I don’t think ETH really wants this guy.

I remember being so jealous of Real when they signed him. He was a fantastic deal for them. It is a shame that he wasn't able to make the next step up. (For me: Asensio for €30m > Antony €90m...)

Lingard replacement

people are thinking first team, perhaps we’re thinking squad as ETH has mentioned it several times
