Would require another lever for sure but if Braithwaite, Umtiti and a few other deadwood leave it could be possible to register. Selling more of the club though for a player we don't even want to stay would be disastrous.

The Chelsea links are probably Frenkie's agents working the media to trying get a CL club involved - I believe CL is still an important factor, just my opinion.
I really don’t understand at all why a 25 year old MF would care so deeply about CL for (potentially) one season. It’s not like Barca and Chelsea are shoe ins for the final by any stretch.

A “near the end” Ronaldo trying to increase his CL goals lead…sure I see that…but FDJ really cares this much about getting knocked out of the CL league this year? Seems weak to me….

Frenkie’s fiancée has just put a video of herself on instagram stories looking miserable as sin, followed by a picture of Barcelona saying “love this city”.

That’s the actions of somebody who’s just received a text saying “pack your bags love, we’re going to Manchester”

Dont think we can, wont work for Barcelonas accounts apparently. There were tweets weeks ago about us offering to pay it.
Trust me, a third party paying off 17M you owe will always work great with your accounts.

Or it’s an indication that there staying put. She’s making it known to her partner that she doesn’t want to leave the city.

Suck it up buttercup... Manchester is a nice city too... you got the Trafford Centre, Spinningfields etc... you'll survive.

Poor girl, i suppose it could be worse, she could be moving to L****pool (can't even say it :nono:)

I agree completely with everything you say but in the end the player has all the power in this situation. What Laporta wants just isn't actually that important in the end, its really what FDJ wants. The guy just bought a huge mansion in Barcelona, which is his childhood dream club, his fiancee loves it there, etc. While I agree he is a bad fit in Xavi's system, he was still selected regularly last year and who knows how long Xavi stays in the job anyway.

People have gotten so worked up about the intricacies of this situation with the levers and whatever that they have lost sight of the most basic and important factor about transfers: Players decide in the end. If a player has a long term contract and doesn't want to leave a club, he almost never leaves the club. And in the very rare case that he does end up leaving the club, its almost always because somebody is offering him so much money above his current wage that he just can't turn it down. FDJ doesn't want to leave and other clubs (United or whoever else) aren't offering him more than his current wage (in fact, almost certainly less). Those facts alone tell us its unlikely that he leaves, no matter what Laporta wants.

If Barca have to pull another lever, it'll be done not to keep FDJ it'll be to register new signings that they shouldn't have made under the presumption they could force out a player on a long term deal who wants to stay.
An alternative to that is that FDJ has always been open to a move to United, perhaps even actively wanting it, but knew from the very start that he was going to wind up playing these games with Barca as part of his exit negotiations. It's just as plausible that he wants to go but also wants the money deferred from the last couple of seasons and has been advised that the best way to get it is to make veiled threats that he will stay until Barca agree to some sort of favourable settlement. That is especially true if Barca have already ceded to him that he needs to go for financial reasons.

He may stay but I'd wager that if he does, it's because his agent couldn't get Barca to pay up rather than any love for them or dislike for us. It's also naive to assume that FDJ's camp aren't in dialogue with United. At very least, they were here doing the Malacia deal so there is no way this hasn't been discussed at least once. United will know where they stand in all this.

I want Frenkie in as much as any muppet here but the constant shouting down of more pessimistic voices is honestly tiring.

The confidence in him signing is based on assumption after assumption (as is the insistence that he is completely against joining TBF). I think a more cautious optimism is more reasonable for this transfer.

The fact is that nothing has happened in months. It is just as likely that he is standing firm over the 17m, as that he simply doesn't want to join us for whatever reason (Not challenging for major trophies, not even in the champions league this year and no guarantee of participating next year either, prefers another option, settled where he is, etc...). I mean, it wouldn't be the first time would it? Some are just so adamant that this isn't true because it would shake their view as Manchester United as an institution. Well the fact is that we are not at our best, haven't been in years, and no amount of denial will make change that. Like any other club, we will need intelligent management and hard work to get back where we belong. Nothing is given.

Someone said a few posts back that they admit that if it wasn't for Ten Hag he likely wouldn't even consider joining. If we muppets can admit this possibility, it goes both ways - what guarantee does he have that ten Hag will be here in a year, when he still has 4 years of a potential contract to go?

I also worry about giving managers free reign. This doesn't work and the successfully clubs have entire structures ensuring some sort of long term project that doesn't rely on a single individual. This is particularly true considering that Ten Hag is no Klopp, Guardiola, Conte that remains a largely unproven quantity.

That said, I do think that if the manager and, more importantly, the club are confident in this signing, we should see it through as long as it takes. There is no one out there like Frenkie for sale.

Pretty sure it was that report that was put out last week,
No? Surely people don’t trust the athletic that much they believe every word printed? Despite the source being not great and the opinions, that of the “locker room” or the journos own “feeling”?

And didn’t the good dutch sources immediately rubbish the bit about him not having a great relationship with Ten Hag?

Wow.

I mean…I don’t blame him. I live in NYC, its my favorite place in the world. I don’t however have my dream job here (pays the bills don’t get me wrong but not exactly the most exciting gig out there). I still wouldn’t leave this city for a better job in say…Atlanta or Nashville (both good cities in their own right but they ain’t New York). He lives in a great city AND plays for his dream club. To come to United in the state we are in rn is a tough sell. You have to think about the human perspective too.

I hope he comes but I think its off.

I didn't believe it, as you say it was purely an opinion piece. The views from the locker room is United is a step down? The feeling is that de Jong, like Ronaldo, wants CL football? No proof, just pure speculation, but because the Athletic printed it, everyone believed it and took it as gospel.

Stupid if you ask me

Wrong!

Some are adamant because if he “simply doesn’t want to join us”, that would make our new manager an absolute fecking weirdo.

SAF hasn’t been a manager for over a decade, yet he called Ronaldo last Summer to get him to join United, yet current manager Ten Hag either hasn’t called, despite a great relationship with the player, else he’s a fecking stalker weirdo that doesn’t believe no means no.

I wouldn’t be adamant we’d be his first choice, I reckon he’d head to Bayern if they came in, or City. But I call utter bullshit on the idea he’s adamant he’s not coming here and like fecking weirdos we’re holding off other transfer plans desperately hoping that he’s only joking, and wants it really.

I know I am not addressing your whole post here, but surely it’s very telling that the man at the centre of such repetitive transfer noise has made no statement whatsoever himself.

This would all end in a moment if he came out and said there was nothing to the rumours and he was happy at Barca.

There is no assumption being made there. His silence on the subject is very loud.

Would you stay in the city and work for employers who were actively trying to force you out and treating you like shit, assuming that was the only job available in that city?

Yeah but we are talking about what 5-7 years of not living in his favorite place? The guy will retire with 35-38 and can live the rest of his life in luxury in Barcelona and wank himself silly watching them play in the third league after their enforced relegation.

Fair enough. The way I see it he can simply be keeping his options open. He could also be telling Ten Hag that he does hope to play for him again one day, maybe now or maybe down the road, here or elsewhere. He is being pushed out and ultimately he will care more about himself than his old manager.

Exactly what you said right here.

Ten Hag knows what he's doing and he must have been told by de Jong that he'll come if the situation arises. Otherwise he truly is going to look like an absolute idiot and he's going to make the board look like utter fools too. I can't imagine, in his first window, he'd do something to make the board so pissed off with him that they take transfer responsibilities out of his hands. Plus look at Brobbey and Timber. Both told us no, we moved on sharpish and that was that. No messing, no sticking around in hopes of a mind change, just gone.

Of course he’ll care more about his career.

But you’re saying he could be “adamant” he aint going United, that isn’t the same as keeping his options open. It’s one or the other.
