This lads last year or so has been very odd. Was heavily linked to Everton before the Euros, then moved to Inter on the back of that tournament. Being shopped around this summer it seems and now off to Chelsea? I didn't even think Chelsea were looking for a right back.

Uh why are Chelsea signing a RB when they already have one of the best in the league?

They're short at CB. My guess is James will be the RCB a lot, with Dumfries at wing back, then Chilwell backed up by Emerson on the left, Thiago in the middle, James backed up by Chalobah and Koulibaly on the left of the 3. They'll probably sign another CB to back up Koulibaly and Silva and take Silva's place when he finally looks his age, which you'd figure might happen suddenly as he turns 38 early in the season.

Helps they can actually find takers for their full backs whereas we are seemingly lumbered

I really like him, I think he can take the next step. I'd prefer him over AWB.

I think Dumfries would add a really exciting dynamic to us down that right flank.
Wouldn't Wan-Bissaka fancy being part of a swap deal to Inter? Or even Bailly?

Basically what others have said above — Chelsea need the depth, and James is very injury prone. I've seen some Chelsea fans suggest that the wing back role actually exacerbates James’ injury woes — getting up and down the pitch twice a week might be a bit too much for him and he seems decent enough at RCB in this system

Or in fact both Bissaka and Bailly. 2 for 1 player swap, may be a good deal for Inter

Get Dumfries for 30m and play 3-4-3 the way Chelsea play it, in attack with two midfielders behind a striker of one midfielder behind two strikers.

We have more than enough centre backs but most of them aren’t good enough playing with two centre backs. Maguire, Varane, Lindeloff, Martinez, Bailly, Jones, Tuanze

The last time Maguire and Shaw played well was with England playing with three defenders at the Euro’s before last shit season.

If we sign Frenkie he is used to this because Holland will play like that at the next World Cup. I even think this could be an extra reason he would want to go to Chelsea. Louis van Gaal (Holland coach) said numerous times he likes the way Tuchel plays and tries to mirror that.

Erik ten Hag played with three defenders at Utrecht before he went to Ajax.

Play like:

Maguire - Varane - Martinez

Dumfries - De Jong/new player - Eriksen/new player - Shaw/Malacia

Bruno/Eriksen/Van de Beek

Sancho - new player

our fullbacks were woeful yesterday. Dalot was off the pace from the start, give away a chance in first 30 seconds. Shaw was just as bad. I think with Malacia on the left side we should be okay, but our right side is a disaster. I'd hope our world renowned "scouting dept" are looking to address this.

See us linked to him for January or Summer. Should definitely consider it. 26-27 good age range, good player for Inter and he's tall, athletic, a great passer and can score goals.

I think he's everything United need on the right side and would make our right flank as strong if not stronger than our left side.

Sign him up, obviously there's talents like Gusto but Dumfries is ready now, unless Gusto has an absolutely blistering campaign I think Dumfries is the one.

Would be all over him if we were playing a back three, but it doesn't look as though we will be doing.

He seems like a [Irrelevant point]/Gosens type wing back who wanders forward into central positions and nicks more than his fair share of goals, but I wouldn't have thought he'd quite have the defensive side to be a top level full back in a four.

I could see improving defensively in a back 4 as he's big and moves well, but yeah he's a little tall to be dealing with tiny wingers with low centers of gravity and he's not very consistent technically. I don't think this one is such a good idea.

Funnily, that's what everyone said at every step up he made (PSV, national team, Inter), and yet he adapts and becomes a standard every time. I wouldn't put it past him to become United's starting RB as well if indeed he were bought. Clumsy as he seems, somehow, he makes it all happen for himself!

He's probably one of those players that ages poorly though, since a lot of his quality seems to come from his physical attributes - if that's not another thing people say that he'll prove wrong. :)

Yeah he seems like a hard worker and managers trust him, just haven't been impressed with his play on the ball for Inter. He would be able to do the vertical running that Mazraoui did for Ajax inside of Antony, so that would maybe work okay here, just feels like we could find a RB capable of that who's younger and better on the ball. But if you have Malacia sit back and tuck inside it's not crazy to basically play 3 at the back with the ball and just have Dumfries looking to run ahead and let Varane pass it straight to Antony, which is how Ajax played, though Timber is obviously better on the ball and quicker than Varane so it was an easier way to consistently start attacks. Would probably make more sense if we didn't have Bruno and needed someone to get into the box and play a 4-3-3 with Eriksen and another passing type #8 in front of Casemiro so when Dumfries charged ahead we'd have midfield cover.

At 26 its now or never for his full back position. I can see his value rocketing if he has a good world cup though.

Werent Inter demanding a stupid fee in the summer too?

He can't defend to save his life. A lot of times he's making recovery tackles instead of being in a good defensive position. Laird is a better prospect if he stays fit

To be fair the only proper club game I saw was Inter v Liverpool and he definitely looked a weak link defensively. Looked really good in the Euros though

He was one of the better performers yesterday. We did look vulnerable over the wings yesterday, but the wing backs were almost playing like third strikers.

He’s a good player, but expensive. There are other options.
