Chelsea’s name us being used I suspect by Barca to try and get us to pay more
I think it suits both Barca and De Jong if there’s more than one club interested (or making out there’s more than one).

Barca in terms of starting a bidding war and De Jong in terms of getting more money.

The messages are all over the place for this one so it’s best not paying too much attention unless something firm is brought up.

I don’t think there’s any change really reading between the lines. Games are still being played and United are just sat waiting.

Isn't it very probable that ETH has no guarantees from FDJ that he will join us, but he hangs in there until the last moment just in case he leaves so that we can be in the mix? Since we hear that there is no backup transfer plan for this position, it seems to make sense.

Spanish press: Chelsea are interested
De Jong Muppets: I won't believe that until Chelsea reporters are saying it
Chelsea Reporters: Chelsea are interested
De Jong Muppets: I can make up a story line that, look! It's nonsense!
Nobody is denying Chelsea are looking at him.
It's valid to question if he's a priority for them and if he's financially viable if you see how much they've spent which is £140m so far and the priority positions they're looking at(2nd CB in Fofana, RWB to replace Azipilicueta Dumfries mention and a ST once they sell Werner after Lukaku)
You'd be looking at over £300-350m worth of spending. Even with sales it's hard to see how they pull that off

People posting every tweet update do get that they are part of the feedback loop right?

That these updates aren't to actually update on a developing situation like a runaway train, but solely to generate engagement and ad revenue right?

If De Jong moves to Chelsea then it will further indicate that how bad both Murtough and Arnold are at the job if not already. There's no coming back from wasting a full transfer window chasing a player only to end up seeing him join a rival.

Ironic considering we're talking about Chelsea

It really won't be a good look for Arnold if he fecks this one up. That being said, I still expect him to join United in late August.

Chelsea have holes in their squad - with Kante, Kovacic, Joghino, Cheek, Barkley and Gallagher…midfield is not an €85million priority - Especially for a player whose assets are quite particular and certainly not directly related to goals/assists/breaking up play. He would essentially replace Jorghino and certainly would not pacify Chelsea fans. He is only really seen as being a statement signing for a team like us - that has no midfield.

I doubt Chelsea will give it much serious consideration. On the other hand, I don’t doubt DeJong would prefer London and so possibly these noises are coming from just the Chelsea camp.

And if a crackhead with a twitter account said he saw FdJ wear a t-shirt with some red in it, we would see a thread title update and shit loads of Muppet pics.

RLC, Kante, Kovacic, Gallagher and Jorginho for 2 CM spots. Does anyone REALLY think they'll pay €85m for FDJ with all those options?

So what happens now then if another respected Chelsea journo comes out and says that there is no interest? Who do we believe then?

All reporters have their sources, that much is true, but theres nothing saying their sources are telling the absolute truth. For all we know, the Athletic guys sources might just be peddling the company line - he prefers Chelsea, wants CL football etc, in the hopes that it spurs Chelsea into making a bid?

People are also conveniently neglecting the fact that Chelsea will, at present, have to be willing to cough up 85 million to negotiate with De Jong in the first place. I strongly suspect they are unwilling to do so because if they really were that intent on signing him then why, pray tell, would they not have matched our offer by now?

If he ends up to Chelsea then United would end up with one big egg on their face and Murtough/Arnold would end up looking like proper memes. I don't blame them for trying. I blame them for not having a spine to force ETH to come to terms with alternatives and for not pulling out of the deal earlier. We're still run like amateurs

Why would it be Arnold or murtoughs fault? They are backing their coach. They’ve done everything they can so far. The mess up is on Barca’s side

The Athletic article states that Kante and Jorginho have a year left (also Kante is plenty injury prone).

It makes plenty of sense for them to go for him.

Yes.

The new owner needs a good window and a statement signing. He's already been beaten to Rafinha and kounde.

Feel for ETH? His obsession with de Jong has us in this mess.
Don't buy that line personally. I think we've been putting that out there to endear De Jong to the idea of coming here.

Have they? The manager has his targets to strengthen and the club is acting on them. LB wasn’t on many people list but Malacia was available and ETH wanted him so we got him. Forget what our rivals are doing, trust the manager and look at the improvements we have seen in our play already - even without worldie signings. The future is bright my friend.
Wish I shared your optimism

But it's hardly a great look if Frenkie goes to Chelsea. That would be 2 of our main summer targets opting for our rivals over us.

Which is why i honestly believe the interest is fabricated by Barca.

I truly do believe that Chelsea WERE interested at one point, but when United upped their fixed bid and agreed a new structure, they thought nah, not interested anymore. Barca are now saying de Jong prefers Chelsea and London to try and get them interested again. The simple truth is, we have no idea where he prefers because de Jong hasn't said a word to anyone in the media for over a month now.

I also think that Barca know which people are leaking stuff to the press so they'll feed them stuff that they want getting out in regards to this transfer too.

It wouldn’t be the outcome we’re hoping for. But I’m not sure how much work or effort has been required to chase this player over the last several weeks. I’m not one to defend our board (they’ve been shit for years) but if nobody’s talking to us about this deal, what is there to do? And we have done work on other signings in the meantime.

As for him going to Chelsea, of course it could happen and it’s very easy to assemble a plausible argument as to why but we don’t have any meaningful comment to rely on.

I don’t think there’s been a single reliable thing written about this entire transfer rumour (that’s what it is really). There was a report that we’d agreed a fee with Barca but even that has since been denied by Barca.

And you don't think they'll try to get them to pen a new deal?

If they weren't going too, you'd imagine that they'd be linked with moves away from the club by now. (unless they have been, i've not followed)
