Juventus fans think he is shit and are glad he is going and now he might be coming here, so what being less shit than what we have but still being properly shit is a good thing?
Does it really matter what Juve fans think? How did the caf react on Di Maria or Pogba's departure? I don't think anyone went to twitter shouting they would be getting a class player. Fact is he's better than Dumb & Dumber in midfield.

Oh boy, I tought that this was picked out, showing only the categories to favor Scotty, so I looked it up and included all the stats.
It just gets worse and worse if you include interceptions, arial duels, fouls won etc.

McTominay was statistically way better in the PL last year than Rabiot at Juve. Let that sink in.

All these posters who purely say we should sign him just cause he is better than McT are going to be sorely disappointed when a month from now we see he isn’t the answer to our midfield woes. His work ethic isn’t the best. He will become a distraction. We will sign him to a 5+1 year contract. Give him £200k in wages and we will eventually send him on loan 2 years down the road after it doesn’t work out. We seen this movie before. We won’t improve one bit unless we stop throwing money away at these ST solutions.
See, that is a different situation altogether. If we are stupid enough to give him some massive contract on massive wages then we have seriously lost the plot. Its only a smart deal if the wages and contract are right

You ask me a question only the management of Juventus can answer. I said in another thread couple months ago I don't mind him in Arsenal for 15m for squad depth.
We are not buying him for depth, if he was 3rd or 4th on the chart you'd think 15 mill was an OK deal, FdJ looking unlikely this guy will be in the line up and not depth.

People want rid of Fred and Scott as do I, but this isn't the way to do it in my opinion, this smacks of anyone but those 2 and I dont care who it is for some posters.

We just lost our first game of the season whilst other teams looked good.

Rabiot is a good player but we have been hoping for De Jong all summer and he is not as good as De Jong.

I think it is understandable. With that said, I think when he makes his debut for us this will suddenly become a much more positive thread.
I wouldn't say Arsenal looked good for the first game. Arsenal created even less chance than Crystal Palace. Arsenal was lucky to get a win.

If we're getting him we're getting him. So at this point, has he had any kind of preseason? Is he ready to contribute or will we be waiting 3 weeks for him to be up to speed?

It’s United. When was the last time we gave someone a “smart” deal with the right wages and contract?

It doesn;t matter if he's better than mctominay, He's not been good enough for a premier league team for the last 3 years.

Is this guy as good as Liverpool's midfield, City's, Spurs', Arsenal's?

Because that is who we have to beat.

"Look in a good spot" let's say.

I think that is fair viewing your pre-season and also the fact that grinding out a result in the Premier League when you don't play well early in the year is often the backbone of good seasons.

It totally makes sense that this place would be a little down in the dumps at the moment.

Where exactly will we be playing Rabiot? E.g. if we took the same team that started against Brighton and put Rabiot in there, where does he fit? Assuming we don't sign anyone else.

Genuinely surprised how many people have such a strong opinion on someone like Rabiot, whilst also not really having a clue about him. It's a completely inoffensive and uninspiring signing, but he improves our midfield with a profile we don't have and has played at a high level.

Another baseless negative comment to continue perpetuating this the toxicity around the club right now.
So we let Pogba go for free under Sir Alex who had his issues with Pogba. No one had a problem with it then. We were still wining trophies and competing in Europe. Fast forward to Mourinhos too me and he wanted a world class CM which Pogba had now developed into and we expected a lot and rightfully so but it never panned out that way. Under three different managers he couldn’t find consistency and he had injury problems which he still has till today and his wage demands became out of control. So instead of giving an underperforming Pogba a new undeserved contract we let him go again for free, yet again no issues, better players have moved on free transfers.
Why is this now being used in reference to the Rabiot deal without context to make it seem as if the club is a mess? The fan base and everything around the club is so toxic right now that everyone is feeding into negativity without any rhyme nor reason.

We've got two in Rabiot and Eriksen, with FDJ almost certainly not coming, what kind of player should we sign?
Right...I can't work out whether you're agreeing with me or not? I think Eriksen was intended to play further forward, so I didn't really count him as one of the three CMs we need.

My point was really, although I couldn't be arsed to type it all out, is that we don't have the luxury of just targeting one or two star names every year and being ambivalent to whether they join or not.

We need players fast and I think that means taking some calculated risks. Therefore, I have no issues with players like Rabiot and Eriksen on for free/reduced fees - although I really hope we don't pay crazy wages.

Like everybody else, I want exciting signings like Sesko or FDJ, but it's pointless buying those players if they're thrown in with Dalot, Fred and McTominay.

Personally, I would have sold Fred, DvdB and McTominay in the Summer, signed three CMs for sure and used Garner as the 4th. Obviously all three couldn't have been £70m players though.

Adrien Rabiot is still a French international playing regularly for national team. He is quality otherwise he won't be pick ahead of other talents in France.
Exactly. For the price and his age he’s a bargain in my opinion.
Do you consider that Rabiot is a midfielder that normally averages 83.6% of his passes?
That’s his worst season I thought rather than ‘normally’? Apparently the whole teams stats were affected…just what I heard, can’t confirm.
I am extremely surprised by the negativity toward him. He is quality, and a bargain for the quoted price. Whether he is the right fit for your coach and system is another story.
Agreed mate. People just love to moan to be honest. If we don’t sign players it’s a moan fest. When we get a good aged international midfielder who’s better than what we have it’s still a moan fest. Just how some people are I guess.
18m is peanuts these days.
Exactly. What did we sell Andreas for? This isn’t a big fee at all.
It's paltry in relative terms.

A £15 million layout on a French international footballer is as risk-free as it gets for a club of United's financial strength. Supporters of Fulham, wolves, etc might feel differently.
Yep. This is such a simple no brainier deal I don’t know why people can’t see that.
He is an upgrade on what we have so not a big issue. But if he is the alternative to De Jong then we are screwed
I don’t think he’s an alternative. I think the plan was always 2 midfielders and an attacker: let’s see but I feel this won’t be our last midfield aitning
£15 mil isn’t a bad deal. We lost 4 midfielders this summer and we need improvements on the ones that remain. If it’s Rabiot plus a top class midfielder (FDJ is probably unlikely but one of the alternatives we’re keeping warm) we’ll be going in the right direction.

The order in which these deals are being announced isn’t doing us any favours but we’ll only really know for sure what our plans are by the end of the window.
Couldn’t agree more. We lost so many players we just need experienced lads to replace them. He fits the bill and is better than McT for sure.

Every time I've seen him, he's seemed like a 6 to me. Too slow and cumbersome to do anything else, he's like Matic in that sense.

Fulham paid 20m for Palhinha who bossed Liverpool around Stuff like this still going on just has really killed any interest. We lose yesterday and then immediately we are back to buying players that make no sense and if we actually wanted them before yesterday we would have gotten them before we even started preseason. If we got FDJ or another CM and Rabiot I would say "oh we are trying improve and get depth" but just Rabiot I would rather just play Garner and Iqbal at least there you are giving actual league and european minutes to young players. All Rabiot is gonna do is maybe be a slight upgrade over McTominay at insane wages.

Glazers would be very happy with this bit of business, Eriksen on a free and Rabiot for 18m euros. They should be getting a solution to the midfield not this.

Absolutely. For me it’s Fred bad, Rabiot worse, McTominay worst. He’ll be an improvement on McT but such a slight one that it might as well be negligible. Should we have to play a midfield 3 of those guys at any point, it’ll be a bottom 3 level one, and that’s harsh on Bournemouth and Forest’s midfielders to even be grouped with these guys.

I’m incredibly against this signing. Pull your finger out Murtough and Arnold - fine, there aren’t many top strikers available now, but midfielders? Anyone can spot a midfielder available now who is better than Fred, McTominay and Rabiot.

Wouldn't it be simpler all around if you just pointed out any problem you're aware of with these stats, if there are any? What, are they just for one game or something?
In the case of Rabiot last seasons's possession stats are outliers, there isn't much to draw from them because they are far removed from the norm. He is a career +89% completion player while McTominay is around 85%. And Rabiot is a far better defender.

The problem is that almost any PL midfielder would improve our midfield, the bar is that low.

We're just filling the squad with shite again when it was suggested this would be a fresh start. So our midfield now is Rabiot and Fred? still bang average.

Saying that everything ETH did was "just in the Dutch league" is grossly unfair. Yes, it is weaker. than the premier league - of course, but if we take this view then what chance does he have? Why did we even give him the job?
We hired ETH because of his tactics whom unlike Moyes's, LVG's and Mou's are cutting edge. We hired ETH because unlike Ole he knows how to coach efficiently and we hired ETH because he's a disciplinarian and a winner. Having said that we have to admit that Ajax lack the spending power United have and they do not face the opposition we face on a week in and week out basis. We must also brace ourselves that he'll need time to adapt and that he'll make mistakes as well especially surrounding the transfer market. Between 87 and 90 SAF made6 good signings out of 16 (Choccy, Hughes, Sharpe, Pally, Ince and Irwin). Then in 1991 he hit the full jackpot (Kanchelskis, Parker and Schmiechel) and the rest was history.

These days clubs lack the patience to give managers so much time. Which is why they rely on the likes of DOFs to help managers focus more on their core duties rather then transfers etc. Unfortunately United lack that

I'm happy to have Rabiot tbh. We've looked at him in the past, we definitely need some midfielders in, and if we can get him reasonably cheap, then I don't mind it at all. It's not like he's a shite player. He's good at linking up, he's quick in possession and his technical.

Why are you guys complaining so much? Would you guys rather we stick with Fred and McTominay?

I think we'll get plenty of mileage out of Rabiot. 100 games+ at the very least.

It's not the inspired signing I was hoping for at the start of the summer, and if this was who Ten Hag wanted, we should've acted months ago, but I'll take it.
People want a shiny new world class toys.

Some forget that we're in a period of transition now and not very attractive to shiny new world class toys, so semi polished to scuffed is what we can get at the moment.
The only way we can tempt shiny new world class toys to join us is by offering ridiculous wages that nobody else will pay, and we're moving away from that because we end up being stuck with overpaid shiny new toys when they don't perform for us and nobody wants to pay them.

Came on in their last game against Atletico Madrid in the 2nd half and was subbed 22 minutes later, that's all the minutes he has seen in pre-season.

It’s an alternative. Maybe they got word now that there’s 0 chance of it happening, whereas before it was a lukewarm chance and held out until the last possible minute.

If it was Tielemans, you’d not claim it was a panic buy but astute football business
Can we not just sign Tielemans instead?

Both teams had basically the same number of shots and our xG was higher, although definitely much closer than the 2-0 scoreline suggests. Palace away is a fairly difficult fixture if you look at their record against top teams under Vieira and we dominated them for most of the first half. We probably would have managed the second half better had ESR and Fabio been match fit to come off the bench, and the subs we did bring on did make a difference to the tempo of the game. I'll take it.
