How can you possibly come to that conclusion? Savage has had zero experience playing competitive football- Garner was one of the stand out players for a team that got promoted to the Prem
And he was the more talented youth talent too.

Would be interesting to do a statistical comparison of peoples opinions on Garner before and after the news of potentially selling came out. I swear it was 75% thinking he should be given a run in the team vs 25% who thought he shouldn’t, right up until last nights news. And now there’s been a switch to probably the same percentages, but the other way.

Not overly bothered, he has quality on the ball but never seems to get on it enough, so not sure he's suited to our midfield, particularly at this moment in time. We are desperate for wc quality. Hoping this sale is a sign that some is arriving.

We have young midfielders coming through that are at least as talented as Garner. At least we are selling him when the club hasn't ruined his stock.

I only really casually checked up on him last season, but when we took him back a mate who supports Forest first thing he said to me was that Garner was ok but wasn't going to be good enough to make regular appearances for our first team YET.

Factoring in our physicality issue over McTom, and the fact that we do have a really bad habit of keeping hold of players until they depreciate in value so severely we can never get rid, then I can see why they're considering this.

He’d be in the first team if he had a fancy foreign name like Garnier.

Based on what I've seen. I feel there's more to work with for Savage and I think he shows things that Garner doesn't, firstly desire to get on the ball and be involved in play. I know he's not proven yet, but just a hunch. At one stage Messi wasn't proven compared to Bobby Zamora, it's still there to see the talent of players.

Oh and Savage has played in the Champions League :smirk:

Probably would have been first name on the team sheet for Ten Hag if his name was van der Garner.

It doesn't. Our midfield can't get any worse than it is right now, so he either makes it here now or never. If he goes on another loan then he will get stuck in "Dean Henderson cycle" of going on loan, doing good, returning and still being questioned whether he can do the same here.

Funny Van De Beek isn't starting games then...
It makes sense because him going on loan and getting PL experience would increase his value
He is a decent player but even in our pre season he was way to passive

We always complain that we never get a decent fee for our kids and now there is a quoted decent fee and no one wants to sell someone that can’t get a game over McFred. The delusion of this place is wonderful sometimes. I rate Garner but I don’t see him in training every day like ETH. Sell him, add a first refusal or buy back clause and keep it moving.

Hey, I said that there is certain degree of favouritism to Ten Hag's decisions, not that he's straight up stupid!

Obviously both comments have been a tongue in the cheek and not 100% serious, if you cannot tell by now.

It makes sense because him going on loan and getting PL experience would increase his value
After Phil Jones' extension, let's steer clear of our board trying to protect our players' transfer value...
If he's loaned he might end up not playing, being shit or breaking his leg. Will be year older and have one less year on the contract. If there was the best time to sell him, it was probably at the beginning of this transfer window, on the back of 2 successful loan spells, with Nottingham Forest very keen on getting him back. I could see them paying around 25M back then. And now they've already signed some midfielders and are not as desperate.

Some of the outrage over this is funny. This is what we should have started doing ages ago. Make a quick decision on young players. Do they have it, or no? If no, sell. Don't keep them around to be shit starters or shit squad players like McTominay and Elanga. Just sell them. Put a buy back if you feel they might step up one day. It'll be better for Garner to develop elsewhere and maybe he develops enough that he is good enough to be here. But you can't keep loaning him. Better to sell.

100%

This obsession over academy players and keeping them here for 60+ years and a pension is what has got us into this mess in the first place.

We need to stop treating average players like untouchable gods that can't do any wrong.

Sell him to Forest with a buy back fee, if he matures into a good player then go back for him.

Ah yes, totally makes sense to sell a midfielder since our squad is stacked with them.

It would be very very typical of this current state, to bin Garner, while we keep Scott and Fred. It does not even make me angry any more, just sad.

You are being sarcastic but it actually is.
  1. Bruno
  2. Eriksen
  3. Donny
  4. Fred
  5. Mctomonay
  6. Garner
  7. Zidane Iqbal as a youngster
  8. Martinez can fill in at DM
For 3 positions. About to add Rabiot in a ball winning role. Still going for Frenkie. If we get both, we'll also need to get rid of both McTominay and Van de Beek probably on top of Garner.

Great strategy. If they turn out to be any good we can just buy them back for 80 million in a few years.

Thought things would change under EtH but they're as bad as ever. Henderson was right to kick up a fuss and get his loan, I hope Garner gets a move to a club that will give him an opportunity rather than waste his time as EtH has no interest in giving youth a chance.

Besides hanging around with affable losers like De Gea, Rashford and Shaw must be toxic to youth.

Sell now but insert a buy-back clause. I am surprised United doesn't do that more often, especially when other clubs like Real and Barca have been doing that with their young players for ages. For example, Carvajal who I think was sold to Leverkusen, had a really good season and then rest is history.

I do agree. Liverpool have pulled some corkers with the sales of Solanke, Ward, Ibe and others.

The only thing i would say about the youngsters in general this summer is it was an ideal chance from a squad management viewpoint imo to say ‘we will sell both AWB and Dalot, buy a good starting rb and use Laird as backup’.

Rinse and repeat across the team. I think we should have put the resources into getting together a good nailed on first 11 backed up by some youngsters for this season but obviously havent got much money and have been pathetic at selling players yet again.

Better bank on some decent midfielders coming in or we will have mcfred backed by savage and iqbal

You'll earn a lot more money over time if you sell the "decent but not exceptional" youngsters at their peak value before they get a "proper chance", even if you toss buy back clauses to get them back when they hit. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Pogba was an exceptional youngster who left on a free. Entirely different situation. Garnacho is looking like an exceptional youngster. Januzaj, Rashford, Greenwood have been exceptional youngsters. They don't always work out, but you see it instantly and they get their chances. Fair. Garner, is not. Garner, is turning 22 this season, and has had 1 season in the championship under his belt so far.

Look at Liverpool and Nico Williams. The guy has loads of potential at right back. They sold him because they have Trent there and know he won't be needed pretty much ever. So they took the 20m or whatever and ran with it. City, Chelsea and Liverpool all make huge amounts of money from selling their young players. Its why Chelsea can spend 300m this summer and be fine with ffp. Its what United needs to do. Elanga should have been sold already, McTominay should be long gone, tuanzebe should've been sold after his loan spell to villa, Henderson should have been sold after his loan spell to Sheffield United, Pereira should have been sold a good 5 years ago, Lingard should have been sold years ago, Williams should have been sold years ago. None of these were ever exceptional youngsters, all had good loan spells to then get big contracts and waste away as squad players who aren't good enough for the club but with contracts we can't get rid of.

If he’s not going to get his chances then sell him. Cash in and use the money to buy players we want for the manager’s rebuilding project.

Exactly, get a buy back in place. If he does good then we can bring him back for a reasonable price.

Yeah it's mental. People complain how we get such shit transfer - yes, because if you give players the opportunity who the feck would want them? Part of the reason clubs buy players is because there's an unknown factor about their potential or quality, but we exhaust that by showing the world they're not that great.

Do we not want to try him out first before selling him?

Sometimes I just don't understand this club.

We are happy to collect 6 or 7 CBs but will sell all our midfielders down to zero

Agreed. Even though Chelsea get a lot of stick for selling De Bruyne, Salah etc. they have shown how much you can profit from selling players on when their stock is high as opposed to waiting until they are not worth anything. Real have been selling their young talent for ages while inserting buy back clauses. It works. We sold Daniel James for almost £30m, it just makes sense.

I think it's quite obvious that reinforcements are coming. Whether it's just Rabiot or more, we will have to see. Let's hope there's more.

I quite like Garner and he has a lot of qualities... but whenever I watch him, I just get a feeling that he doesn't quite have the personality to make it at United. I'm talking about needing to be a midfielder who takes responsibility and demands the ball. That's the sort of players we need and what has been lacking.

With that in mind, I can't say I would be gutted if he left but I hope he proves me wrong because he's very talented.

I don’t particularly rate him that highly from the few times I’ve seen him but the fact he’s not even been given an opportunity to prove himself first is rather strange especially with Fred and McTominay being so shit. That being said ETH will watch him everyday in training and if this is his decision then he obviously feels he doesn’t offer any upgrade on what we currently have as hard as that is to believe. I’m guessing this is to raise the funds to try and sign another midfielder before the window shuts.
