I'd rather Lindelof than the Slab.

We shouldn't let him go on loan. He can play RB too if we can shift AWB out.
Interesting. Think Linde peaked during Ole era in consecutive matches vs Milan and City. He was outstanding for barely two matches and then it was only downhill.

On the other hand, Harry's actually looking more like Premier League defender, but doesn't look like learning totally new system, while getting slower with each passing season.

They're kinda both heavy baggage to carry and both doesn't have strong leadership traits. Harry will probably stay for at least one season, but it's gonna be a growing torture, watching him fade into slower version of himself during next 3-5 years.

Might go on a loan to Roma, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Understand if he wants to play more matches, but a loan would be stupid imo. Martinez might fail, Maguire might have a season like the last one, and Varane might continue his injury nightmare. If 2 out of these 3 events happen, which I see as highly likely, we will regret sending him on a loan.
Brings back the memories from the good old days. A simpler time when James Richardson would regale us with the tales from Italian football over a capuccino on C4 on a weekend monring.

Well I'd say he's quite well suited to ETH system actually, better than Maguire if you want to play high line and probably best passer amongst our CBs.

Also, Martinez talks started well before the preseason, we've been waiting for a long time for work permit if I recall. So it doesn't make sense to me that ETH has given up on Lindelof so early?
Also, no way we're going to play them together as CBs.

Maybe I missed the memo about Lindelof being injured but I don't get the masterplan behind Martinez deal at all. Hopefully it all fits together somehow but IMO letting Lindelof go only makes sense if we're getting good money for him.
You can’t play a high line with Lindelof peddling backwards to his own box

This guy seems to have been completely forgotten about. All the talk is of Maguire coming back in if one of Varane or Martinez are rested, dropped or injured. It should be Lindelof coming in for one of these two ahead of Maguire but for some reason Lindelof is the easy guy to leave out. When Maguires dropped it's a huge story, when Lindelof is dropped no one bats an eyelid.

He's not Club captain. Or English.

And everybody hates him anyway (which I find very unfair but that's how it be)
I am not aware of anyone hating him. I certainly don't. But it's a false equivalency trying to compare the perception of his treatment to Maguires. Maguire is an English man who is Club captain of the biggest Club in the country. Of course this will capture headlines. Plus Maguire cost £80 million.

Maguire has redeeming traits and he's shown that he's better than he currently looks.

Lindelof nearly always looks scared and no one wants a coward for a defender. Not in the premier league.

Maguire is a better header of the ball. In every other aspect of defending and footballing ability, Lindelof is better.

Lindelof reads the game well positionally but thats about all he's good at.

The problem is that even when he's in the right place at the right time, he'll promptly squander that advantage by backing up endlessly, or otherwise not being proactive. Never seen such a cowardly defender.

And Maguire's arial strength ism't to be dismissed either. It's practically the foundation for premier league defending.

The fact that someone like him has survived this long here is a testament to the failure of the past decade. He is someone I expect to find on the bench of Everton, Villa or Brentford. Between him and Maguire, the depth of our back line is shockingly bad. Let's hope Varane and Martinez say fit.

On the plus side, maybe he'll play better this year now he's not worrying about his baby dying or getting his house ransacked by a group of renegade bloodthirsty thugs.

I suppose his critics, who may be lacking both a heart and a soul, have forgotten all about the ordeals he's suffered

if you know, you know

i didn’t know about a baby dying, that’s awful if true

but, this is his 6th year here and he’s only proven that this level is beyond his ability

if we wanna do better we need better

Oh no he/she didn't die, they were in the hospital for some reason though... Can't remember now.

Either way I only made that post in the hope/expectation you'd react so thanks. Hope you're enjoying being home :)

Another one who needs to go after this season. Looked knackered in the end.

He just doesn't have the courage to tackle . Just watches the game pass by

Not been many softer United players in my time supporting us. Outside of the ones who have been perennially injured of course.

Absolutely awful. Slow, cowardly and exactly the kind of passive attitude we should be moving away from. Happy to sit around putting in 5/10 performances while the slightly more high profile players become scapegoats.

Looked really rusty especially in passing, but him and Harry never had any problems with keeping a clean sheet in first half. Then moved to right back where he has never performed well. Had some good passes but he is too slow to play RB and simply looks like he is playing in the wrong position all the time.

He and Maguire had trouble finding any courage to move the ball forward. Lisandro and Malacia do it so easily that you forget how difficult these guys make it look sometimes. They receive the ball and wait to be closed down, barely move their body to create space and then opt to move the ball sideways or back because at that point no good pass remains available. But its because of poor touches and not creating the space to play a pass in the first place.

1st half, he pressed high, didn't get ball or man and then never pressed again. Passed responsibility to Maguire when it came to passing and almost refused to open his body up for forward passes. 2nd half, was poor on the ball, slow and lost too many 50/50s. Had his hands behind his back for one cross and gave the attacker all the time in the world. All around meek in everything he does.

Typical Lindelof performance.

Night and day. With Maguire and lindelof you get false sense that there's no option. However the other two you mentioned do it regularly with the same players ahead

Yeah they're just so confident and agile to take the ball into a player coming to confront them and they know they'll either dribble out, win a freekick or find a decent pass to keep the move going.

Maguire and Lindelof will take one touch forward, see a player 15 yards coming towards them and its already decided at that point that they're happy to go backwards or sideways because they know they dont have the confidence to take on the opponent and find something constructive.

Yep. People underestimate constantly how much it hurts a side to have defenders that are shit scared to progress the ball. You end up instead inviting pressure before giving to DDG who is happy to lump it into no mans land and now we are on the defensive.

This pair of jokers drive me mad when they are dithering over the ball, backwards and sideways until they invariably lose it or give a hospital ball to the keeper or a full back. I used to feel sorry for AWB the amount of crappy situations they put him in. Neither of these players should be accepted as good enough if we want to progress. Not even as backups.

Had a quiet game today until he looked out of place on the right. It does worry me that we are one CB or RB injury away from Lindelof / Maguire starting for us regularly. This doesn't bode well for our top 4 aspirations.

I’d play a one legged man in a phil jones mask before Lindelof

At the minute I'd say Casemiro is arguably the 4th CB because he's played there before and Eriksen-McTominay are doing well enough as a partnership.

I think you either play Varane and Lindelof or Maguire and Martinez (if you want to rotate).

The Maguire-Lindelof partnership is just too passive both on and off the ball to suit what are are trying to do.
