Is this the worst transfer window since 2013?

I’m struggling to think of a window where we were so abject at incomings. The last one I can remember is the 2013 window where we signed Fellaini for above his release clause, and failed desperately with Baines and Fabregas.

Perhaps the summer in ‘09 when we lost Ronaldo and we signed Valencia, Owen and Obertan.

And the thing is... in hindsight, so were most of the others. Like 2019 - Maguire, Wan Bissaka, Dan James. Back then people were inexplicably delighted and called it superb business. Now James is gone, Wan Bissaka can't get in ahead of Dalot and is widely regarded as deadwood and the less said about our esteemed captain the better.

Or 2015. We were all fecking ecstatic. We were back in the Champions League and we went on a major spending spree in the summer. And how did that work out? Depay, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Darmian, Romero, Martial - there's an argument that effing Romero was the most successful signing out of that lot.

We had probably one of the best transfer windows last summer. At least it seemed so on September 1st.
This one might be the worst if you consider how many pain points we have not addressed. Unfortunately at the same time we are out of Champions League so that makes transfer dealing a bit more difficult and I certainly don't expect any big names to end up at United.

The last good window we objectively had was 2016.

This current one is IMO worse than 2013. There was more time to plan for this window than then and it's been appalling.

The entire club sold the fans on change and we're resorting to yet another scattergun approach.

At this point, we have to hope ETH is a messiah-like manager, because the board/owners are fecking clueless.

Murtough should be fired or given 1 more window(next year) to rectify the shortcomings of this window. He has the makings of another disastrous appointment.

Rabiot has a below 80 percent passing accuracy. He’s basically McTomminay 2.0 so I don’t know why they would even consider him as a midfield option.

He will flop so I don’t know why Ten Hag doesn’t go for either a Tielemans type player or just throw Iqbal in who I believe is a finer footballer already than Rabiot.

If they want a CDM and want to appease the fans Declan Rice is there but obviously the Glazers don’t have any money because they are pretty broke for club owners so he just sits at West Ham.

There are so many good midfielders I really can’t understand why it’s so hard to get one in for 50m or so unless De Jong is definitely joining and the club knows this.

Agree completely - it would‘ve been a decent window if we’d stopped at Malacia, Eriksen and Martinez, just look at the huge difference on the pitch those three alone have made. But to then add a backup for De Gea, Casemiro and Antony, the former being one of - if not the - best DM of a generation, and the latter being one of the most promising young South Americans out there at this time, and it’s easily the best window we’ve had post-Fergie, especially considering it looked like we were getting Rabiot and Arnautovic at one point.

The only downsides were not getting a striker and not shifting Ronnie, but those can be rectified in January hopefully.

Even with the benefit of hindsight, he still considers that a great window? It played right up to Woodward's Galacticos (kit sellers) strategy to appease the fans. And especially when you got a freebie in Eriksen who has done what £89million Pogba was supposed to do.

You’re completely spot on. Shocking execution but ultimately superb signings. Martinez, Eriksen and Malacia have all been revelations. Think Casemiro will become more important as the season goes on, and I have high hopes for Antony.

It was a good window in terms of personnel coming in but some players that are deadwood so to say needed to get cut. But yeah, the way we went about our business was shit. Needed to get the players in early to have them learn Hag ball in pre-season.

An absolutely brilliant window, the boss wanted so desperately to wait for FDJ which I can understand and fair play to the club for backing him on it.
Once it became clear FDJ wasn’t happening and the manager accepted that, we moved swiftly and backed the manager to the hilt.
The first three signings especially look absolutely incredible, and considering the later deals are one of the World’s best DMs and Antony, it looks very exciting.

Some will moan that we didn’t sack off the FDJ deal earlier, but that one was clearly on the manager, so rather than act like this prick at Chelsea I’m glad the club trusted the manager on it but were prepared to swiftly switch focus when required.

A cautionary tale about knee jerking in the transfer window.

I think it was a pretty good window and the most pressing issues were addressed. Replacing Telles and giving Shaw a real good competition. So good, he can't smell the pitch.
Bringing a left footed right winger, one of the most promising ones. Add on top of that the manager knows him pretty well.
Adding Martinez - a totally different breed of a CB that compliments Varane. We've gone from Barry and Victor to Varane and Martinez in the space of two summer windows. Our CB partnership looks miles better than it was.
And then adding two midfielders. Eriksen has transitioned into deep lying playmaker and we all can see he's quality. I suspect people could moan about our chase of FDJ and compare it to Moyes' chase of Kroos. The difference here is 3 weeks before the window closed we moved on, went after the alternative and had it wrapped up in a week time.

I'd assume ST, GK and RB are also areas ETH would like to address, but given the players we have currently in those positions (citing Ronaldo and De Gea), that was way down on the priority list. To add, Dalot is a player with a lot of potential, and AWB is also a young kid that could probably transform if coached the right way, although that remains to be seen.

I'm pretty happy with this window. Would've been happier had FDJ joined, but the lad (and his girl/wife) were quite clear they wanted to stay in Barcelona, so I think we got the best we could get.

Eriksen, Martinez and Malacia have all been very good and are proving to be important signings.

I think we needed a different profile to Casemiro and maybe Antony too but it's still early to judge.

Based on what we've seen so far I'd rank them thus:

1. Eriksen - makes our whole team tick
2. Martinez - exactly what we need at the back, he's got fire in his belly but he's not reckless like Rojo and Bailly. He is assured, calm, and brilliant at passing forward. Could end up being number 1 by the end of the season dependent on how consistent he and Eriksen are
3. Malacia - strong start although I'm worried like many of our fullback signings over recent years he's just not quite the level required, he gives 100% and clearly has some strong qualities but has shown himself prone to making silly mistakes. I remember quite clearly us all being excited over the likes of Darmian and Telles after a couple of games.
4. Casemiro - he will come good, but does he fit the system?
5. Antony - not been impressed at all so far, seems a bit of a show pony and bar his goal and a couple of nice passes not really offered much of an attacking threat, but as with Casemiro it's fairly early days.

I think by the end of the season Antony will have climbed to 3, and Malacia will drop - serving as a very strong back up to make Shaw perform better (which clearly he needs).
