Surprised his season average rating is only 5.3
Are you? Most players' average ratings are largely determined by their popularity rather than their performances on here. There've been scapegoat players who never got any credit for as long as I can remember. Used to be Fletcher and O'Shea mostly, now it's De Gea and McTominay.

I just don't think he's good enough at reading the play defensively or passing and moving without the ball for how Ten Hag eventually wants us to play.
Funnily enough he does have a good knack and press resistance ability when receiving a pass from the keeper/defenders deep in his own half back to goal. His technique, wide stature/physique and turn on the ball is actually quite solid. Shame he doesn't get involved enough, tactical or not.

For me, the quality of his passing was not the main problem. It’s that he doesn’t make enough passes. That makes it sound like wanting passing for its own sake but it’s really about providing an option for his team mates, getting on the ball and not giving it away or getting dispossessed and that automatically leads to more passes.
Agree with this. Like a lot of players in the team, they all possess the ability to do these things but it's doing it consistently and in a structured way that will be the next step. Sancho taking on players/penetrative dribbling being a good example.

I'd say his 2/10 on opening day is bringing down his average

If you can stop McTominay from 'hiding' from the ball in midfield and offering himself as a possession option a lot more frequently, you'd get a top tier midfielder. Probably his biggest flaw.

I’m not fletchers biggest fan, far from it….he’s massively overrated and people say that if he’d been fit for the 09 CL final….well nothing would be different. Barca were perhaps the greatest club side of all time. HOWEVER McT ? He’s not even close to Fletcher in terms of ability or performance.
I am not saying McT is at Fletchers level when he was at his best - but if he can keep up his current form - he really isnt that far behind. He is just a different player

Yeah, some people do overrate Fletcher. Probably they remember only his best period (which was bloody good) but even in his lesser periods he was still significantly better than McT.
Fletcher was superb for 2 seasons - before that he was often played out of position, and after that his illness ruined his career. So it's hard to base Fletcher on much more than roughly 3 seasons he played centrally.

Fletcher was incredibly effective in a system to support Scholes/Carrick under one of greatest ever managers. McTominay is definitely not at Fletcher 2007-2009 level yet in terms of performance, but he hasn't had Scholes/Carrick next to him. Instead he's had Fred in a two man midfield (with Bruno playing an advanced role under Ole). Imagine a Fletcher-Fred combo running the midfield. McTominay finally has Eriksen and a deeper Bruno to work with & a proper coach to help him. We'll have a better idea this season.

You mean his lesser seasons were not really down to him i.e. it’s not really fair to judge him on the rest of his career except those 2 or 3 seasons in CM before he got sick? If so, I pretty much agree. But then it’s maybe not quite a level playing field to compare other players’ whole career against Fletcher’s three good years. He had some real rough luck but is still remembered as an important player for us.

I didn’t see it but I’ve read positive reports. Every time he gets a little bit better, it’s only good news. I still think he has a very long way to go but he could come on in leaps and bounds.

He has improved, but is still a bench player for the future if we want to reach the level of City. We cannot cede so much possession in games if we want to get anywhere near to winning the league again. At the moment, we don't have anywhere near the level of control required to get there.

We won't get that domination with McTominay in midfield, so improvement is certainly needed in the next window. He is not comparable to the likes of Rodri, Fabinho or Casemiro, which is the level of player we should be aiming for. I know people are going to say McTominay is keeping Casemiro out of the squad, but it is irrelevant as history shows Casemiro is a much better player. This may very well be a temporary situation, anyway.

It is acceptable, for now. But there is a lot of room for improvement in the team and, in terms, of performances.

That’s a good read about a guy who has had criticism doled out to him time and time again but mentally stays strong. Hope his resurgence continues and builds into consistent performance

I mean Fletcher had to more or less give up at his peak - I think he was around 27 - and he could have probably been a key-player for us for 4-5 seasons more. As I recall - Fletcher made his debut for us just months before turning 20 - the first couple of seasons he had to play on the right, and it was probably around the time he was 23 he was given a chance at his natural position - and 4 years later his career was over.

So Fletcher had a really short career as a central midfielder - we are probably talking maybe 4.5-5 seasons

Yeah, he’s a special case. He would have got better into his 30s but for his physical issues. Very unlucky. I can’t remember how we got onto this. I think I was saying that Fletcher is overrated by some people. I’d probably stand by that. His good seasons were very good but, through no fault of his own, he wasn’t able to deliver top performance for an extended period. So it’s not his talent or ability that’s overrated (by some) but his overall contribution across his career.

His "treatment" of the ball and slow thinking and sloppy with his ball control with a touch and another touch are in are in the midst

Secondly his passing is still off - He had great situation where if he pass the ball with the right touch he could have put his teammate in front of the goal but his pass was too powerful

When he passes the ball I get stress because you know that he can miss pass and that turn out very quickly to a deadly counter from the opposition in areas that we shouldn't lose the ball.

He is useful in a team and matches that require getting around making challenges winning the ball back and a bit of fight
It’s why he and Fred were good in games under Ole against bigger sides as they had the ball but if you are looking to possession bases football he does show his limitations.
Overall he’s been good this season and has done enough to keep his place but eventually he will be benched

I'm not sure about the first part, not yet anyway. Last season he was one half of that midfield duo that seemed to vanish when opponents came charging through our middle. With him and Fred if they aren't already in good position then they might as well be in the stands. They are very iffy defending space and are very much an ingredient in how we brutally fall apart when we aren't playing conservatively. Flaws in their positioning really really shows when we aren't playing compact. Far as the last couple weeks go I'm just cautiously optimistic about the individual performances. When the time comes it will be nice for the players to finally show us they can support a progressive setup for 90 minutes.

Last seasons coach is different to this seasons coach. Maybe game instructions and training sessions are different too

Maybe the player's weaknesses also left overnight like a bad cold. Or maybe training sessions transplanted a new person into his body. We should even be able to train a ballboy into Carrick in the next two weeks. Could save a lot of money. The recurring weaknesses were on full display the last time we tried a less conservative setup at Brentford, or was that also last season? There's nothing wrong with staying grounded, will be for the player's benefit when we skip the abuse attached to unrealistic expectations.

You are aware McTominay didn’t start that game right?

I've been a vociferous critic of his over the past 12 months but have to say he's improving massively under ETH. Showing for the ball more, first thought being a forward pass in addition to his tenacity. Really hope he can push on and keep it up. Great to see.

Great to see (although not ideal as an Ireland fan!) Presumably reflects his recent form that he’s been moved into midfield.
Definitely, looks like he's trying to break the lines more with his passing too which is what I imagine ETH demands.

I will say that players will get better working with good managers, thing is our players haven't really been working with the top end lately.

I think Clarke has ditched the 352. McTominay won’t play CB in a back 4.

McTominay & McGregor at CM with McGinn ahead of them is a very strong midfield.

Ive been one of the most staunch defenders of McTominay on here for a couple of years now. Glad to see he is getting a bit of recognition, although I dont think he is playing vastly differently to how he has ever done - its more just that he has a few more appropriate players around him which plays more to his strengths.

One thing that has surprised me is that he has been successfully holding down the DM role. I have always maintained McTominay is a box-to-box player and best partnered with someone in the mould of a Carrick. Clearly Eriksen is a different player to Carrick and it means more defensive responsibility has fallen on Scott, but he has done well.

McTominay's issues have always been around hiding from the ball and poor defensive awareness/positioning. He was never a bad passer (but equally not a playmaker) and was never bad on the ball.

I would like to see a midfield of Casemiro - McTominay - Eriksen in a 4-3-3 going forward, which I think has a good mix of everything.

I think that's how individual performances work, you are jointly accountable for the portion you played. If I'm being honest I actually mixed it with the performance before that also happened this season but I don't think that brentford sub performance is the route you want to go either. He's a utility level talent, they also enjoy the thing known as form, treating this notion as an insult to the player is foolish. Not everyone wants them all sold. Actually like Mctominay for the team.
